Abstract: Systems and methods for Indirect Evaporative Cooling and for Two Stage Evaporative Cooling for conditioning fluids such as air are disclosed. The Indirect Evaporative Cooling Systems comprise scalable indirect evaporative heat exchangers formed with polymer substrates that have been treated to render one surface substantially hydrophilic while the other is substantially hydrophobic, with channels for passage of primary (cooled) an secondary (cooling) air streams between them. The Two Stage Evaporative Cooling System comprise an indirect evaporation component where the fluid is pre-cooled indirectly with the abovementioned scalable heat exchangers, followed by a direct evaporation stage where the pre-cooled fluid is further cooled directly by adiabatic evaporative cooling. The device employing these systems is scalable, energy-efficient, uses aseptic materials, filters/clean incoming fluids (e.g. air), circulates disinfected evaporating liquid (e.g. disinfected water and has enhanced performance efficiency.

Abstract: The pre-cooler includes one or more cells which are oriented about an air stream to be cooled. A housing defines a perimeter of the cell with an inlet and outlet for air passing therethrough. Water outlet nozzles within the housing are preferably supported upon bars which orient the nozzles facing in a direction counter to flow of air through the housing. Each nozzle is coupled to a separate stage with multiple stages of nozzles coupled to separate valves. A controller opens or closes different valves. The controller measures ambient humidity and temperature conditions as well as air flow rates to calculate the amount of water to be added to the air and then opens appropriate numbers of stages of valves so that an appropriate number of nozzles spray water into the air to saturate the air. Flow rate control is thus provided without pressure variations, for optimal nozzle performance.

The cooler includes a first flow channel for inlet supply air and a second flow channel adjacent the first for exhaust air. A separation wall divides the liquid desiccant and the coolant but allows heat to be transferred from the supply air to the coolant which releases water vapor to the counter or cross flowing exhaust air.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for improving the rate of heat transfer between an evaporator of a refrigeration system and the environment surrounding the evaporator. In one embodiment, the evaporator is placed in thermal communication with the air of a data center where electronic equipment is operated therein. To improve the rate of heat transfer between the air and the evaporator, water is evaporated into the air before it flows over the evaporator coils. As a result, when the humidified air flows over the cold evaporator coils, a portion of the water vapor in the air condenses on the evaporator, thereby wetting the evaporator coils. The wetted surfaces of the evaporator coils improve the rate of heat transfer between the air and, ultimately, the refrigerant passing through the evaporator. In one embodiment, a humidifier having a water atomizer may be used for spraying and dispersing water into the air.

Abstract: This device is a water adiabatic evaporative cooler of two separated air flows contained in a cylindrical body, there is the humid peripheral flow which comprises the components of the water evaporation system, the other is the central flow designated as the ambient dry flow where the air current produces the cooling effect. The two air flows are generated by a single axial air blower, the central zone of the air blower drives the atmospheric air through a central concentric body containing an air to water heat exchanger, this is the air to be directed to the controlled ambient, while the peripheral part of the single axial blower drives the air through an external annular adiabatic evaporation chamber, from here the cool condensed moisture goes to the heat exchanger while residual humid air is evacuated to the external atmosphere.

Abstract: An improved evaporative cooling system with an enclosed insulated chamber having an inlet, an outlet and a blower in the system located downstream of the outlet to draw air to be cooled through the chamber. A foraminous filter extends across the inlet to clean the incoming air of large solid particles. An electric motor is mounted partially across the inlet opening, having a rotating shaft and supporting a disc for rotation on the shaft. A reservoir of water chilled to between about 55 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit is supported within the bottom of the chamber and positioned for engagement by the disc during rotation, which upon rotation flings chilled water adhered droplets upwardly away from the reservoir in a fan-shaped pattern to further clean, cool and humidify the air which passes through a fog-like curtain formed by the chilled water droplets moving within the chamber, prior to exiting the chamber.
