Publication number: 20140200675Abstract: The lined femoral cup of the invention is used in a new reverse hip prosthesis wherein the cup is affixed to the femur and the ball is affixed to the acetabulum. This permits installation of the liner in the factory instead of the operating room. Prior art hip prostheses require installation of the liner in the operating room because the cup must be affixed to the acetabulum, usually by screws, before the liner can be installed. Thus, in a preferred embodiment of the invention the liner is installed under high pressure in the factory. In a second embodiment, a threaded cap is used which permits replacement of the liner without removing the cup from the patient.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 18, 2012Publication date: July 17, 2014Applicant: Hip Innovation Technology, LLCInventor: Zafer Termanini

Patent number: 8361163Abstract: A substantially cup-shaped prosthetic device for a joint is provided. The prosthetic device includes an outer surface configured to operatively engage at least one of a first bone of the joint and a component and an inner surface configured to connect to a second bone of the joint. The inner surface is rotationally asymmetric to minimize intrusion on a vascular region of the second bone.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2008Date of Patent: January 29, 2013Assignee: Mako Surgical Corp.Inventor: Arthur E. Publication number: 20120150315Abstract: A medical device for treating hip joint osteoarthritis by providing at least one hip joint surface for a human patient is provided, wherein said medical device has a largest diameter or a largest cross-sectional distance, and an opening, and wherein said largest diameter or cross sectional distance is adapted to be changed during an operation. Furthermore, a method of treating a hip joint of a human patient by providing said the medical device is provided. The hip joint comprising a caput femur and an acetabulum, the method comprises the steps of: cutting the skin of the patient, dissecting an area of the pelvic bone on the opposite side from the acetabulum, creating a hole in said dissected area, said hole passing through said pelvic bone and into the hip joint of the patient, and providing said medical device to the hip joint, through said hole in the pelvic bone of the patient.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 12, 2010Publication date: June 14, 2012Applicant: MILUX HOLDING SAInventor: Peter Forsell

Patent number: 8152855Abstract: Tools and methods for implanting hip resurfacing femoral prostheses along a path defined by the axis of a shaped femoral head surface are described. The prostheses are stemless partial ball components having an outer surface shaped to conform to an acetabular socket and may be a two part design having a mating sleeve component with an internal bore adapted to receive the shaped femoral head. The tools and methods are capable of accurately implanting both one and two piece ball components and sleeves without requiring the prosthesis to have a central stem or the preparation of a stem cavity in the femoral head and neck.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 2010Date of Patent: April 10, 2012Assignee: Howmedica Osteonics Corp.Inventors: Peter Tulkis, Robert E. Patent number: 7776097Abstract: The invention solves the problem of anchoring a prosthetic component into compliant, cancellous bone by a thin, preferably pure titanium, or a titanium-based alloy, perforated, hence hydraulically open, shell (1, 13), spaced apart from the second, non-perforated shell (2, 14). In most applications, dictated by the anatomical site of insertion, shells are approximately hemispherical in form, connected to each other at the equator. The solid shell may contain a further, articulating component of the joint, e.g. a polymer or a ceramic insert, or it may serve that function itself. One or both components of a joint prosthesis can be anchored according to the invention.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2005Date of Patent: August 17, 2010Assignee: Scyon Orthopaedics AGInventors: Slobodan Tepic, Henrik Malchau

Publication number: 20080004710Abstract: A hip resurfacing femoral prosthesis has a partial ball component having an outer surface shaped to conform to an acetabular socket and has a mating sleeve component with an internal bore adapted to receive a femoral head. The head has been shaped and dimensioned to engage the bore and is retained by bone ingrowth, an interference fit or by bone cement. The ball component and sleeve axes may be offset to reposition the outer surface.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 30, 2006Publication date: January 3, 2008Applicant: Howmedica Osteonics Corp.Inventors: Robert E. Publication number: 20040024468Abstract: Femoral prosthesis for the articulation of a femur (11) in a corresponding acetabular seating (13) of a hip, comprising at least a femoral head (12) of a hemispherical shape, which is inserted into the acetabular seating (13), and pin means (18) which are engaged and clamped in a top portion (21) of the femur (11). The femoral head (12) is a distinct and removable component with respect to the pin means (18) and the pin means (18) are provided with, or are associated with, coupling means (15, 115) which are inserted into a mating seating (14) of the femoral head (12) in order to obtain a removable constraint between the latter and the pin means (18).Type: ApplicationFiled: July 28, 2003Publication date: February 5, 2004Inventors: Gabriele Lualdi, Paolo Dalla Pria
