In a first set of four embodiments, a latch is formed in a first part of the locking mechanism and in a second set of four embodiments, the latch is formed in a second part of the locking mechanism. The lock assembly may be mounted internally or externally of the prosthetic socket. The first part of the locking mechanism may be a laminating ring or a thermoforming plate and the second part may be a mounting block with or without a pyramid for controlling a prosthetic pylon.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 2002Date of Patent: June 3, 2003Inventor: Aldo A. Patent number: 6511513Abstract: A prosthetic lock assembly of the ratchet type for connecting a liner for a prosthetic socket to a prosthesis. The lock assembly includes a two part locking mechanism held together by suitable fasteners. Removal or loosening of the fasteners enables a user to separate the two parts from one another in the event a sock gets into and jams the locking mechanism. In a first set of four embodiments, a latch is formed in a first part of the locking mechanism and in a second set of four embodiments, the latch is formed in a second part of the locking mechanism. In all embodiments, an elongate latching pin that depends from a prosthetic socket liner has annular ratchets formed in it along its length and the latch selectively engages the latching pin between the ratchets.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2000Date of Patent: January 28, 2003Inventor: Aldo A. Patent number: 6497028Abstract: Improved prosthetic components and a method for assembly therefor are described wherein the prosthesis comprises prefabricated modular components including a socket adapter, shank or pylon, a keel, and a foot. The method for preparation of the improved prosthesis reduces the time required for prosthesis preparation over that of the prior art, and includes the steps of making a cast of the remaining leg stump and forming a socket therefor; placing the socket in an alignment jig; assembling modular pieces including a prefabricated keel, pylon, and socket adapter; attaching the socket adapter to the socket; draping a final coating of copolymer on the prosthesis; and removing the pylon and socket adapter from the interior of the prosthesis.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2000Date of Patent: December 24, 2002Assignee: Rothschild's Orthopedics, Inc.Inventors: Vernon R. Publication number: 20020193887Abstract: A lock adapter is adapted to connect a residual limb liner with locking pin to a transfemoral prosthetic limb. The lock adapter is formed of a bracket having a first end and a second end, and preferably has a generally S-shaped configuration. The first end of the bracket has a first mounting face against which the lock is to be secured. The second end of the bracket is provided with a second mounting face against which the prosthetic limb is to be secured. The bracket being is formed so that the first and second mounting faces are spaced apart from one another, and may optionally be angled relative to one another. Methods of forming transfemoral test and final sockets are provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 17, 2002Publication date: December 19, 2002Inventor: Verner M. Swanson

Patent number: 6470552Abstract: A mandrel, and a method using a mandrel, for fabricating a cosmetic cover for a prosthetic limb having a socket for placement over a wearer's residual limb and having a component positioned outside, and attached to, the socket through aligned holes of the component and the socket. The mandrel has a mandrel plate attached to a mandrel shaft. The mandrel plate has holes aligned with the holes of the socket so the mandrel plate may be attached to the socket and the component thereby supporting the prosthetic limb. The mandrel shaft is placed in a chuck of a milling machine when the supported prosthetic limb, with an attached cosmetic cover blank, is attached to the mandrel plate, and the outside surface of the cosmetic cover blank is milled to match a mirror image of the wearer's sound limb.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2000Date of Patent: October 29, 2002Assignee: Prosthetic Design, Inc.Inventors: Tracy C. Patent number: 6440173Abstract: The stump of an amputee's limb receives a sleeve which is inserted into a formed plastic socket, and a locking stud with axially spaced peripheral grooves projects from the sleeve. A coupler is mounted within the bottom of the socket and has a top conical surface with inclined guide grooves which extend to a tubular center bushing slidable within a tubular fitting. A set of circumferentially spaced locking balls are confined within holes in the bushing and move between locking positions projecting into one of the grooves of the locking stud and retracted release positions in response to axial movement of the bushing within the fitting. An actuator stem projects laterally from the coupler and has cam surfaces effective to rotate a pair of actuating pins to shift the bushing and release the locking balls in response to axial or rotary movement of the actuator stem. The actuator stem may also be rotated to a position where the actuator stem is locked against axial movement.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 2000Date of Patent: August 27, 2002Inventor: Dennis E. Meyer

Publication number: 20020116071Abstract: A shuttle lock for maintaining a patient's residual limb in a prosthetic limb socket includes: (a) a housing having a distal surface adapted to abut an inside surface of a prosthetic limb socket, a substantially concave proximal surface and a hole extending into the center of the proximal surface, where the hole is adapted to receive a plunger pin carried on a patient's residual limb; (b) a lock positioned within the housing for securing the plunger pin received in the hole; and (c) means for securing the housing of the shuttle lock within the prosthetic limb socket; (d) where the concave proximal surface includes at least one radial groove which is adapted to guide the plunger pin into the hole. Preferably the housing is substantially cylindrical in the concave proximal surface includes a plurality of the radial grooves circumferentially distributed thereabout, where the radial grooves extend substantially from and outer circumference of the concave proximal surface to an outer circumference of the hole.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 22, 2002Publication date: August 22, 2002Inventors: Tracy C. Publication number: 20020116074Abstract: A golf prosthesis assisting an upper extremity amputee to swing a golf club. In one embodiment, the prosthesis comprises first and second prosthetic sockets in which the amputee's limbs are received. An extension pylon extends from the first prosthetic socket towards the golf club. The second prosthetic socket is attached to the extension pylon, thereby assisting the amputee in keeping shoulders, back and hips in proper alignment during back swing and return swing. There is also a more complete transfer of energy into the swing from the shoulders, back and legs. A wrist terminal device connects the extension pylon to the golf club. The wrist terminal device emulates cocking and release of the wrists during a conventional golf swing. The wrist terminal device provides a club holder firmly holding the golf club, and a rotary joint advantageously restrained from rotation in all but a preselected plane.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 16, 2001Publication date: August 22, 2002Inventors: William A.
