  • Patent number: 8833105
Abstract: A method for making a vacuum insulated glass window assembly is provided in which an exposed end of a pump-out tube of a vacuum insulated glass window assembly is sealed using a laser that is applied to the end of the pump out tube in controlled sequential manner as opposed to a short duration, high-powered application of a laser. In particular, a method is disclosed in which a multiphase sequential variable power application of laser energy to an exposed end of a pump-out tube for controlled exposure times and decreasing laser trace diameters produces a more controlled melting of the tube glass to reduce or eliminate undesirable outgassing that may occur during a high-power short duration exposure of laser energy to the end of the pump-out tube to seal the tube.

  • Patent number: 5383948
Abstract: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for cracking off glass attached to, or comprising a portion of, the constricted end (neck) of the glass funnel component of a glass cathode ray tube and thereafter sealing a replacement glass neck component to the funnel component. A gauge and sensor mechanism are used to produce a signal representative of the location of a defined plane through the funnel. This signal is sent to a central processing unit which controls the apparatus so that the cracking off of the old neck and subsequent sealing of the new neck take place at that defined plane. In this way, the individual method steps are integrated into an automated process.

Abstract: A miniaturized sensor element is prepared using a capillary having first and second ends with a channel therebetween. One of the ends is closed while the other is open. Near the closed end, the capillary material which softens when heated, is heated and gas is supplied to the open end. This expands a chamber near the closed end which can be shaped and sized by moving the point of heating and varying the gas supply into the channel. The initially closed end is then opened and the channel inverted. The initially open end is then closed and again the capillary is heated and gas is supplied to form and shape a second chamber in the channel. After this, the closed end of the channel is again opened and both now open ends are smoothed to complete the capillary for use as part of a miniaturized sensor element.

Abstract: An electronic device package is made by first making in a stencil member (11) an opening (12) in the shape of a closed loop that surrounds an inner portion (13) of the stencil member. The closed loop is a continuous opening except for a plurality of web members (15), each of which extends across the opening to secure the inner stencil portion to the remainder of the stencil member. A glass slurry (7) is forced through the opening of the stencil member onto a first substrate (18) so as to form on the substrate a substantially closed loop of glass slurry, which is thereafter glazed to form a glass loop (32) bonded to the first substrate. The first substrate is used as cover plate and placed over a second substrate (24) containing an electronic device (23) such that the glass loop surrounds the electronic device and contacts the second substrate along its entire length. The glass is heated sufficiently to soften it and cause it to bond to the second substrate as well as the first substrate.
