To determine how much copper oxide to add, the weight percent of green glass in the provided glass cullet supply is determined and an effective amount of copper oxide to, at least partially, decolorize the green glass is determined wherein an effective amount is determined using a non-linear inverse prediction model between the weight percent of green glass or chromium and/or iron content and the copper oxide. The amount of copper oxide is thus non-linearly adjusted for increasing levels of green glass in the glass batch. The distortion is reduced by irradiating the fused silica article with an irradiation source, such as an infrared laser. The radiation causes localized heating which repairs at least a portion of the fused silica lens. A fused silica lens that has been treated by the method and a lithographic system are also described.

Abstract: Disclosed are a method and system for removing scratches from a planar panel of translucent or transparent material, such as glass, without removal from its frame. A heat source supplying a controlled amount of heat is moved across the surface of the planar panel at a controlled velocity and at a controlled distance from the surface so as to progressively melt a thin surface layer at portions of the surface heated by the moving heat source. The melted material re-flows under surface tension to smooth scratches in the surface layer. Movement of the heat source is repeated over different portions of the surface until all scratched areas have been treated. The treated panels have a smooth surface with scratches removed, and have good optical and structural qualities.

The process includes arranging electrodes in an electrode structure such that neighboring electrodes are positioned at regular intervals in a ring-like configuration; forming a stable ring-like arc between the neighboring electrodes, without generating a continuous arc between electrodes facing each other across a central portion of the ring-like configuration; heating the inside surface of the crucible; and removing a foreign substance located on the inside surface of the crucible or a bubble located under the inside surface of the crucible.

Abstract: Embodiments include a method for forming a glass which displays visible cracking prior to failure when subjected to predetermined stress level that is greater than a predetermined minimum stress level and less than a failure stress level. The method includes determining a critical flaw size in the glass and introducing a residual stress profile to the glass so that a plurality of visible cracks are formed prior to failure when the glass is subjected to a stress that is greater than the minimum stress level and lower than the critical stress. One method for forming the residual stress profile includes performing a first ion exchange so that a first plurality of ions of a first element in the glass are exchanged with a second plurality of ions of a second element that have a larger volume than the first ions. A second ion exchange is also performed so that a plurality of the second ions in the glass are exchanged back to ions of the first element.

  • Patent number: 6298690
Abstract: A large tumbling device into which broken pieces of labeled glass such as beverage bottles, or cullet, are fed. After entering the interior chamber of the tumbler, the cullet is carried by a plurality of interior fins along the inside circumference of the tumbler to a point where the glass falls back to the low point of the tumbler. During this fall, the cullet passes through a flame generated in the interior cavity of said tumbler. The glass is heated to a temperature well below 600 degrees Fahrenheit (the temperature at which the molecular structure of glass begins to change) therefore ensuring that the processed glass retains its original properties. This process is repeated numerous times, ensuring that all of the foreign material is removed, before the cullet passes through the entirety of the chamber and is cooled to be processed into the desired grades.

  • Patent number: 5718737
Abstract: Mixed colored cullet glass, which generally contains amounts of green, amber and flint (colorless) glasses, is recycled into amber colored glass by regulating the additive amounts of amounts of iron, carbon, sulfur, and sulfur compounds in the mixture to impart the desired reddish-brown hue. The color green may be selectively decolorized from the mixed colored cullet and the mixed colored cullet may be colorized for the color amber, thereby rendering the decolorized mixed colored cullet substantially amber colored for use in amber colored glass production, such as carbon-sulfur soda lime amber glass. The technique of the invention is also used to produce recycled green or flint glass from unsorted mixed colored cullet glass. The invention is particularly useful in producing amber colored containers or bottles for beverages that require protection from the deteriorating effects of light, such as beer.
