Patent number: 4396411Abstract: A shear frame mounting and positioning mechanism for linearly reciprocal shear blades in which the shear frame can be adjusted in a horizontal plane in a direction parallel to and perpendicular to the direction of travel of the shear blades. Additionally, the shear frame is tiltable in a vertical plane which is parallel to the direction of movement of the shear blades. A mechanism is provided for locking the shear frame under the feeder spout, the mechanism including means for adjusting the shear frame in a direction perpendicular to the direction of movement of the shear blades. The shear frame can be swung between a position under the feeder spout to a position out from underneath the feeder spout and also raised and lowered in a vertical direction.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 1982Date of Patent: August 2, 1983Assignee: Emhart Industries, Inc.Inventor: Frederick W. Patent number: 4388100Abstract: In a glass molding machine, for example, of the type known in the industry as I.S. machines, an apparatus for shearing molten glass into gobs as the glass issues from a feeder includes mechanisms for independently adjusting both the horizontal and vertical position of the shears with respect to the feeder nozzles, as well as the distance between the two halves of the shear blades and the length and time duration of the cutting stroke. All adjustments are possible without shutting down the entire forming operation and can be effected merely by supplying energy to adjusting motors.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 1981Date of Patent: June 14, 1983Assignee: Vitro Tec FideicomisoInventor: Elio G. Patent number: 4374659Abstract: The apparatus disclosed for severing gobs issuing its stream from a glass feeder. The shearing mechanism takes the form of two sets, or pairs, of shear blades mounted from diametrically opposed positions relative to the bowl of the feeder. A single cam drives through multiple linkage mechanisms to operate the two pairs of shear mechanisms and synchronisms so that the gobs will be all sheared at the same instant. The links in the linkage mechanism all are provided with the usual adjustments, as to lengths, in order to provide that adjustment after setup which is normally necessary to assure the proper operation of the shears.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1981Date of Patent: February 22, 1983Assignee: Owens-Illinois, Inc.Inventor: Donald G. Davey

Patent number: 4283214Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming and delivering insulating glass in gob form to a lamp base making machine from a continuous stream of molten glass. A rotating dial severs the glass stream into uniform gobs and during rotation forms the gobs into a ball like form and delivers the gobs to a pair of radially spaced drop points for delivery to the base shells on an indexing base making machine.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1980Date of Patent: August 11, 1981Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Phillip A. Patent number: 4214494Abstract: A straight line shearing mechanism which includes a unique pneumatic control system to cause the operation of the shears. One feature involves the cushioning of the piston member of the pneumatic cylinder assembly on the return stroke. Another feature is the provision of an automatic retract to open the shears in the event that the shear blades do not complete their cutting stroke. Also, one blade of a set of shear blades may tilt in the event of excess tension between the blades. Additionally, one shear blade is pivotally adjustable about a pin member having an axis extending in the direction of travel of the blades. Further, the drop guides are horizontally adjustable relative to its associated shear blade in the direction of travel of the shear blade and also adjustable about a vertical axis.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 1979Date of Patent: July 29, 1980Assignee: Emhart Industries, Inc.Inventor: Francis A. Dahms

Patent number: 4162152Abstract: A molten glass metering device for making electric lamp bases by accurately metering the rate of flow of molten glass from an orifice in the wall of a glass melting furnace. The device comprises a metal member including an integral hollow elongated member aligned with the orifice. The flow of glass is controlled by varying the flow of electrical current through the metal member to control the temperature of same and to control the temperature of the glass within the metal member, thereby to control the rate of flow of molten glass therethrough.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1977Date of Patent: July 24, 1979Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: James Petro

Patent number: 4015967Abstract: A method and apparatus for shearing an elongated gob of glass from the end of a vertically flowing stream of molten glass and tilting the severed gob from its vertical orientation toward a horizontal orientation. A pair of shear blades are mounted for horizontal reciprocation between open and closed positions. In the closed position, the blades are overlapped generally in the center of the stream of molten glass and thereby shear a single gob from the stream. The movement of the blades is so controlled that the lower blade moves appreciably beyond the stream centerline. The upper blade has completed its stroke and is returning to its open position while the lower blade continues its over center travel. The difference in travel is caused by a difference in the length of the drive linkages between the upper and lower shear blades. The net result of the total cycle is to cause the severed gob to rotate about 90.degree. in mid-air before entering a forming mold.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1976Date of Patent: April 5, 1977Assignee: Owens-Illinois, Inc.Inventor: William R. Ward, Jr.
