  • Patent number: 11181872
Abstract: A system for optimizing machine performance includes an optimization system and a data processing system. The data processing system records readings from data sources monitoring the performance of a machine and related aspects. The readings are processed at the optimization system and a machine learning model is trained to differentiate between data corresponding to an interval of optimal runtime performance and data corresponding to an interval of pre-error performance. The trained model is used to identify a subset of the various data sources that are most-predictive for a particular performance state of the machine, such as a pre-error performance state or an optimal runtime performance state. The subset of the various data sources are provided to a multivariate model for generating set-point recommendations for each of the most-predictive data sources.

Abstract: A method and associated system are provided for producing a perforation line between adjacent lottery tickets in an automated production line wherein a substrate having lottery tickets printed thereon is conveyed through a perforation station in the production line. A perforation machine in the line is controlled to define a perforation line between the adjacent lottery tickets. The controlling process includes inputting control variables into a controller associated with the perforation machine, the control variables relating to conditions that determine a desired perforation profile of the perforation line. The controller programs the perforation machine with a specific perforation profile for the perforation line that is generated based on the entered control variables, and changes the perforation profile upon inputting of different values for the control variables.

Abstract: Automated parameter tuning techniques for cross-directional model predictive control for paper-making under user-specified parametric uncertainties are developed. The CD-MPC design explicitly accounts for parametric model uncertainty while finding a value for the CD profile trajectory generation that minimizes the CD settling time of the measurement 2 sigma spread and does not exceed an overshoot limit for actuator 2 sigma spread. The inventive technique includes: (i) providing uncertainty specifications for the temporal parameters of the process model, (ii) specifying 2 sigma overshoot limits for the CD actuator profile, (iii) using robust stability theory to find a minimum bound for the profile trajectory tuning parameter, (iv) using a frequency domain technique to reduce the search range for the profile trajectory tuning parameter, and (v) performing an intelligent search for the tuning parameter that minimizes measurement 2 sigma settling time without exceeding the actuator 2 sigma overshoot limit.

Abstract: A network of interlocks and input devices and a system for tracking their use and control, in which each interlock and input device is associated with a machine which performs a process. Machines are associated with input devices by reading machine identifications from Data Storage Devices (DSDs) with input devices. To disarm an interlock prior to using a machine, the input device is used to read one or more DSDs containing information required to track the process. The input device sends the DSD data to a CPU which then sends an authorization signal to a machine interface. Upon receiving the signal, the machine interface enables the machine to be turned on. The CPU logs the process and DSD data. Once the operator turns off the machine, it cannot be restarted until the operator reads the DSDs required by the machine.

Abstract: Alignment is a critical component for modeling a cross-directional (CD) papermaking process. It specifies the spatial relationship between individual CD actuators to paper quality measurements. Misalignment can occur unexpectedly due to sheet wander or CD shrinkage variation. In certain applications and circumstances, a misalignment of one third (?) actuator zone width can result in significant paper quality degradation. Detecting a misalignment and identifying CD alignment in closed loop are highly demanded in paper mills but these are nontrivial problems. A technique for maintaining proper CD alignment in sheetmaking systems entails monitoring the alignment online, triggering closed loop identification if misalignment is detected, and then deploying the new alignment. No personnel intervention is required.

Abstract: A method includes predicting measurements or states to be used by a controller to control a process. The predicted measurements or states are generated using a model of the process. The method also includes providing the predicted measurements or states to the controller such that the controller uses the predicted measurements or states at a sampling rate of the controller. In addition, the method includes updating at least some of the predicted measurements or states using measurements associated with a characteristic of an item from a sensor. The model may represent a discrete time model, and the method may also include generating the discrete time model using a continuous time model of the process. The measurements could be received from a plurality of sensors, where at least two of the sensors have different sampling times.

  • Patent number: 7648614
Abstract: A web making machine is monitored to identify at least one cross-machine direction (CD) actuator that is developing local mapping problems. The identified CD actuator and a segment of surrounding actuators are probed to determine a performance curve for the actuator. The center of an insensitivity region of the performance curve is selected as an optimal mapping alignment setting for the identified actuator with the setting for the actuator being updated. Global smoothing may also be accomplished by probing a global smoothness factor to generate a corresponding performance curve that is then similarly used to select an optimal value for the smoothness factor.

Abstract: A control apparatus obtains information identifying sheets stored in an MFP to be caused to perform printing for printing a printed object to be subjected to jacketed book binding, wherein this information is stored in the MFP. The control apparatus stores thicknesses of respective paper sheets as information about paper sheets. From this information and from the information obtained from the MFP, the control apparatus creates a table indicative of the correspondence between the respective paper sheets stored in the MFP and their thicknesses. Further, on receiving a selection of paper sheets to be used for printing for the printed object and a number of these paper sheets, the control apparatus determines a thickness of each paper sheet by making a reference to the table and calculates the spine jacket width by multiplying the thickness by the number of paper sheets.

  • Patent number: 7606629
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a device for determining the causes of failures in industrial processes, in particular continuous processes with continuous webs, e.g. paper, textiles, plastic or metal films. Equipment and machines for industrial processes, in particular processes with continuous webs are frequently very complex combinations of drive components and automation components. As a result process failures are very difficult to detect and evaluate, among other reasons because they generally manifest themselves at different points in the equipment or machine. The present invention provides a monitoring system the monitors and measures output signals throughout the industrial process to determine if any failures will or may occur and provide data analysis to determine what caused the failure be means of the online monitoring.

Abstract: The performance of scanning systems can be significantly enhanced by replacing the traditional power track with preferably just two wires or transmission channels for effecting communication between (i) the sensors on the mobile carriage of the scanning system and (ii) the controls, power sources, and related devices that are typically located in a compartment or module which is a significant distance away. This can be implemented by employing selected multiplexer and complementary de-multiplexer combinations in the scanner head and in the module. This technique reduces EMI noise, power loss, drag on the moving scanner heads carrying the sensors, and cost of construction.

  • Patent number: 7494567
Abstract: Temperature measurements of sheet material such as paper can be obtained directly from an analysis of the absorption spectrum of water in the infrared region. The technique is based in part on the recognition that the central wavelength position of a selected moisture peak is dependent upon the sheet temperature; the wavelength position also has a known temperature sensitivity. Thus, once the wavelength position of this moisture peak is ascertained, the moisture temperature of the product being monitored can be calculated. The position of the moisture peak is preferably obtained from the derivative of the peak. By measuring the size of the infrared absorption and the wavelength position of the absorption peak, both the moisture content and the moisture temperature of the sheet material can be determined. The data is used for process control. Tunable laser diodes are particularly suited as the source of infrared radiation for the temperature sensors.
