Database Recovery Patents (Class 707/674)
  • Publication number: 20150120673
Abstract: Methods, devices and systems enable restoring a database system more efficiently. A server computing device may be configured to determine a recovery time interval, periodically review database records to identify a database record that has not been updated within a most recent recovery time interval, add the identified database record to a journaling log, and update the identified database record to include information identifying a time at which the database record was last added to the journaling log. After detecting a failure event, the server computing device may perform the database operations identified in the journaling log to restore the database system.

Abstract: A method is used in recovering duplicate blocks in file systems. A duplicate file system block is detected in a file system. The duplicate file system block is referred by a first inode associated with a first file of the file system and a second inode associated with a second file of the file system. Metadata of the duplicate file system block is evaluated. Based on the evaluation, a set of inodes in the file system is determined. Each inode of the set of inodes refer to the duplicate file system block. Based on the determination, the set of inodes is updated.

  • Patent number: 9015129
Abstract: Systems and methods for restoring file system objects from image level backups of servers. The method receives a selection of an image level backup of a source, file system object(s) to be restored, and restoration parameters identifying a destination. The method initializes and attaches a virtual storage to a virtual appliance and an associated hypervisor. The method stores virtual storage data changes resulting from the file system object restoration in changes storage. The method preserves file system object information, wherein the file system object information corresponds to the source operating system (OS) and file system. The method preserves file system object information such as permissions and ownership through business logic that ensures that the file system object information for restored file system object(s) on the destination match file system object information from the source, even when the method operates on a host running a different OS than the source server.

  • Patent number: 8943023
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for receiving uploaded data from a sender at a receiver. A data deduplication technique is described that may reduce the bandwidth used in uploading data from the sender to the receiver. In the technique, the receiver, rather than the sender, maintains a fingerprint dictionary for previously uploaded data. When a sender has additional data to be uploaded, the sender extracts fingerprints for units of the data and sends the fingerprints to the receiver. The receiver checks its fingerprint dictionary to determine the data units to be uploaded and notifies the sender of the identified units, which then sends the identified units of data to the receiver. The technique may, for example, be applied in virtualized data store systems to reduce bandwidth usage in uploading data.

Abstract: An approach for managing a data package is provided. Network utilization is determined to exceed a threshold. A sender computer determines a hash digest of the data package by using a hash function selected based on central processing unit utilization. If the hash digest is in a sender hash table, then without sending the data package, the sender computer sends the hash digest and an index referring to the hash digest so that a recipient computer can use the index to locate a matching hash digest and the data package in a recipient hash table. If the hash digest is not in the sender hash table, then the sender computer adds the data package and the hash digest to the sender hash table and sends the data package and the hash digest to the second computer to check the integrity of the data package based on the hash digest.

By this central registry, businesses and other entities are facilitated to post their location and location-related information in a single place, for all users who need or want it; and users can refer to this single place, via the Internet, Web, and other telecommunications devices, to obtain accurate, complete and timely location and location-based information about the registered businesses and other entities. Each record of the UGD is keyed by a proprietary location address (PLA) based on the World Geographic Referencing System (WGRS), and optionally may have one or more proprietary location addresses (PLAs), which also may serve as keys.

Abstract: This patent application relates to enhanced logical recovery techniques for redo recovery operations of a system with an unbundled storage engine. These techniques can be implemented by utilizing an enhanced logical recovery approach in which a dirty page table (DPT) is constructed based on information logged during normal execution. The unbundled storage engine can include a transaction component (TC) that is architecturally independent of a data component (DC). These techniques can enhance redo recovery operations by mitigating the resources needed to determine whether previously executed operations sent from the TC to the DC are to be repeated in response to a recovery-initiating event. This can include using the DPT to avoid fetching every data page corresponding to every previously executed operation received by the DC during recovery and/or pre-fetching data pages and/or index pages that correspond to PIDs in the DPT.

Abstract: A database rollback processor allows rollback, or rewind, of the data and metadata to a point at which a failover or other metadata change occurred, therefore “rewinding” the metadata to a previous consistent point. The rollback processor identifies transaction entries in a redo log resulting in changes to the metadata. The changes are identified backward to a target recovery time. Transactions affecting the metadata are stored in a stack. The transactions are then backed out of the metadata according to the stack to restore the metadata to the state at the target recovery time. Data changes from the redo log may then be applied to the corresponding metadata as it existed at the target recovery time. Since the target recovery time is not bound by the timing of the snapshots, but rather may be at an arbitrary point chosen as the target recovery time, a failover, replication or recovery operation need not rely on the snapshot time.

Abstract: In an example embodiment, updated repository instances are typically developed on a development system, transferred to a testing system, and after testing, transferred to a production system. Such an updated instance may comprise content, sources and a data dictionary. As an updated instance is moved from one system to another, the change is applied to an original instance. A shadow copy of content is kept for the original instance. In another example embodiment, a shadow copy of content is created as part of the change process. The sources and data dictionary may have their own versioning mechanism. To undo the applied change, the sources and data dictionary are rolled back to their pre-change state. The content is retrieved from the shadow copy and restored to the original instance. Finally, stranded data is restored according to appropriate policies.

Abstract: Systems and methods of coalescing and capturing data between events prior to and after a temporal window are disclosed. In an embodiment, a method includes determining a temporal window based on one or more of a user data and an automatically generated data, coalescing data between events prior to the temporal window using a processor and a physical memory and capturing data between events after the temporal window. The coalescing data between events prior to the temporal window may be determined by a set of overlapping operations to a data set, wherein certain operations have non-overlapping sectors which are not coalesced. Shifting a data view around a recovery point through a direction-agnostic roll algorithm that may use a roll-forward algorithm to shift the data view to a time after the recovery point and/or a roll-backward algorithm to shift the data view to a time before the recovery point.

Abstract: A novel and useful system and method of fast history compression in a pipelined architecture with both speculation and low-penalty misprediction recovery. The method of the present invention speculates that a current input byte does not continue an earlier string, but either starts a new string or represents a literal (no match). As previous bytes are checked if they start a string, the method of the present invention detects if speculation for the current byte is correct. If speculation is not correct, then various methods of recovery are employed, depending on the repeating string length.

  • Patent number: 8825972
Abstract: A system, method, and medium for performing incremental backups of a data set within a deduplication storage system. An incremental backup of a data set is initiated, and the changed data items of the data set are deduplicated. An extents catalog is created to fully describe the data set. References associated with the unchanged data items of the data set are retrieved from the extents catalog and then sent to a deduplication engine. The deduplication engine uses the references to retrieve fingerprints associated with the unchanged data items from a previous reference map. Then, the deduplication engine creates a new reference map for the incremental backup and stores the newly generated and retrieved fingerprints in the new reference map.

Abstract: Technologies are described herein for providing snapshot-assisted synchronous replication between a first storage server and a second storage server. For example, a notification is received at the second storage server that the first storage server has resumed operations following a failure. At this time, the first storage server is in a first current state and the second storage server is in a second current state. Upon receiving the notification, a common snapshot is identified between the first storage server and the second storage server. Upon identifying the common snapshot, the first storage server is rolled back from the first current state to a previous state according to the common snapshot, and upon rolling back the first storage server from the first current state to the previous state, the first storage server and the second storage server are resynchronized using the common snapshot.
