Abstract: Hyperlinking or associating documents to other documents based on the names of people in the documents has become more desirable. Although there is an automated system for installing such hyperlinks into judicial opinions, the system is not generally applicable to other types of names and documents, nor well suited to determine hyperlinks for names that might refer to two or more similarly named persons. Accordingly, the inventor devised systems, methods, and software that facilitate hyperlinking names in documents, regardless of type. One exemplary system includes a descriptor module and a linking module. The descriptor module develops descriptive patterns for selecting co-occurent document information that is useful in recognizing associations between names and professional classes.

Abstract: A method of registering a legacy device, a method of transferring data, and a method of authenticating a legacy device are provided. The method of registering a legacy device by using a virtual client, which allows the legacy device to access a domain, includes: receiving unique information on the legacy device from the legacy device which requests the domain to register the legacy device; searching a registrable legacy device list including the unique information on the legacy device which can be registered in the domain for the unique information on the legacy device; and requesting a domain manager, which manages the domain, to register the legacy device, when the unique information on the legacy device is included in the registrable legacy device list, and not allowing the legacy device to be registered in the domain when the unique information on the legacy device is not included in the registrable legacy device list.

Abstract: Embodiments of a method and apparatus for replicating a process performed on a first computer on a remote computer, particularly for the replication of a database maintained of each of the computers. An offset is added to time stamps for a sequence of commands so that a correction in a command or data associated with the command that is subsequently received before the command is executed can be implemented. The correction can result in removing the command from the sequence of commands to be performed, changing the data associated with the command or delaying execution of the command, for example.

Abstract: A computer readable medium storing a database query language statement tuning base in a tuning base memory location is disclosed. The tuning base includes tuning information for one or more query language statements. The tuning information for each statement includes one or more tuning actions for the statement, and a signature to allow an optimizer to identify the one or more tuning actions for the statement.

Abstract: A system facilitates collaborative communications and information sharing in a network defined by a model. The model and a portion of the system are stored on a storage component coupled to a terminal. The system captures context information and user-defined data, the user-defined data provided during user interaction of the user in a first domain of the network, and dynamically stores the context information as metadata associated with the user-defined data, the user-defined data and the metadata stored on the storage component; a tracking component for tracking a change of the user from the first domain to a second domain of the network and dynamically updating the stored metadata based on the change, where the user accesses the user-defined data from the second domain; and an interface to the system that permits the user to create and view the user-defined data according to the model of the network.

Abstract: A request for network access is received from a client device at a network entry device of a network infrastructure. The network infrastructure determines a physical location of the client device and determines authorization of the client device based on the physical location. The approach can include providing the physical location along with other user credentials to an authorizing device. The method can also include determining a level of service based on the physical location. Communication for the approach can make use of the IEEE 802.1X protocol.

Abstract: An archive cluster application runs across a redundant array of independent nodes. Each node runs an archive cluster application instance comprising a set of software processes: a request manager, a storage manager, a metadata manager, and a policy manager. The request manager manages requests for data, the storage manager manages data read/write functions, and the metadata manager facilitates metadata transactions and recovery. The policy manager implements policies, which are operations that determine the behavior of an “archive object” within the cluster. The archive cluster application provides object-based storage. It associates metadata and policies with the raw archived data, which together comprise an archive object. Object policies govern the object's behavior in the archive. The archive manages itself independently of client applications, acting automatically to ensure that object policies are valid.

Abstract: A method and system for sharing knowledge may include receiving information input into a database and organizing items of information in the database. Some embodiments may also include collecting ratings and comments associated with each item of information and allowing users to access and sort items of information according to selected rating criteria in order to find the most reliable and/or valuable information from the database. The described system and method may allow individual members to easily locate the items of information from a collectively generated knowledge base that is presented in accordance with that individual's personal measure of value in the information.

Abstract: Optimizing operation of a media player during rendering of media files. The invention includes authoring software to create a data structure and to populate the created data structure with obtained metadata. The invention also includes rendering software to retrieve the metadata from the data structure and to identify media files to render. In one embodiment, the invention is operable as part of a compressed media format having a set of small files containing metadata, menus, and playlists in a compiled binary format designed for playback on feature-rich personal computer media players as well as low cost media players.

Abstract: A method and system for managing privilege information across multiple applications and/or databases is provided. A flexible and extensible enterprise entitlement framework may be implemented to store and manage various types of privileges, access rights and resources. The enterprise entitlement framework may include a variety of data objects and structures configured to store various components and/or aspects of a privilege. The data objects may include resource type objects, user objects, role objects, action objects, resource attribute objects, list item object and/or hierarchy objects. The data objects defined for a particular privilege may further be linked according to relationships between one or more objects. The enterprise entitlement framework is extensible for use with new applications by defining new objects compatible with the privilege structures of the new applications.

Abstract: A method and mechanism for a distributed on-demand computing system. The system automatically provisions distributed computing servers with customer application programs. The parameters of each customer application program are taken into account when a server is selected for hosting the program. The system monitors the status and performance of each distributed computing server. The system provisions additional servers when traffic levels exceed a predetermined level for a customer's application program and, as traffic demand decreases to a predetermined level, servers can be un-provisioned and returned back to a server pool for later provisioning. The system tries to fill up one server at a time with customer application programs before dispatching new requests to another server. The customer is charged a fee based on the usage of the distributed computing servers.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for a fully-automated process for tuning database query language statements that selects database query language statements for tuning, tunes the database query language statements and generates tuning recommendations, tests the tuning recommendations, and determines whether to implement the tuning recommendations based on the test results. The fully-automated tuning process may also automatically implement certain tuning recommendations and monitor the performance of the database query language statements for which tuning recommendations have been implemented.

Abstract: An adaptive data replication and caching system configured for deployment at the network edge. This system can include a data caching system configured to cache application data in a data store and to satisfy queries for application data from the cache. The system also can include a data replication system configured to replicate application data in the data store and to satisfy queries for application data against the replicated application data. Finally, the adaptive data replication and caching system can include a configurator for configuring portions of the data store for exclusive use by the data caching system and the data replication system.

Abstract: A system for distributing and synchronizing objects. One or more embodiments of the invention provide for distributing copies of the objects locally. By copying objects into local address space, the object's methods may be executed locally thereby avoiding excessive network traffic. The state of the various object copies across a network may not be synchronized due to local changes and modifications. To synchronize the objects, one or more embodiments of the invention provide for the use of a policy that specifies conditions as to when objects are synchronized. Embodiments of the invention provide flexibility in setting the policy to accommodate varying applications. Alternatively, a policy may provide for synchronization based on the type or number of messages transmitted. In one or more embodiments, a default policy may be utilized that provides for the synchronization of local objects whenever a client issues a request from the remote server.

Abstract: Systems and methods are described that facilitate exploration and mining of a corpus of documents using concepts and knowledge, rather than keywords and enable interactive visualization, management, monetization, and personalization of knowledge search results on a user interface. Underlying documents can be mapped into overlapping clusters of knowledge dimensions and the documents can be further partitioned into narrower knowledge dimensions, resulting in a hierarchical structure. Content of knowledge dimensions may be filtered using a knowledge dimension map. Knowledge may be personalized by a user and shared in collaborative and social networks. Knowledge-based advertisement systems and methods are described that associate products and services with knowledge dimensions and concepts. Advertisers can bid on concepts and KDs. Systems and methods are described that distribute a percentage of CPC revenue among content owners and provide revenue to content providers based on relevancy scores.

Abstract: An address matching system that maintains a central database of valid addresses has been designed. According to the invention, address matching requests are received by the system from a plurality of remote users located at respective machines (“clients”). Those requests are processed at the central system, and the results are returned to the client that made the request. In addition, novel techniques are implemented for improving the likelihood of obtaining one or more matches from a request.

Abstract: A method and system is presented to parse a WSDL description and build a hierarchical protected object namespace for authorization of access to the resource, wherein the protected object namespace is based on the abstract part of a WSDL but can be used to assist in authorization decisions for multiple different concrete bindings of this WSDL, wherein the concrete binding/request is based on the WS-Addressing endpoint reference.

Abstract: A system and a method are disclosed for delivering an alert from a computer system using distributed notification delivery. The method comprises using a computer system to receive an alert initiation request from an alert operator, where the alert initiation request includes metadata of an alert to be delivered. The method extracts the metadata from the alert initiation request and from its persistent storage place and persistently stores the extracted metadata in a first storage place on the computer system. The method further makes an alert initiation request with one or more communication systems based on the extracted metadata of the alert. The method securely delivers the alert initiation request and extracted metadata to one or more communication systems, which store the metadata transiently for the duration of delivering the alert, deliver the alert to multiple alert recipients tracks delivery progress and collect alert responses, reporting these back to the computer system.

Abstract: A system and method for layered application server processing. Embodiments of the system are particularly useful in extreme transaction processing (XTP) environments to support hundreds of thousands of simultaneous users, and perhaps millions of simultaneous transactions. Applications can be built from service components. Mashups can be performed on applications, services, and data, to create a more dynamic form of application. Data center consolidation and server virtualization techniques can be used to distribute applications over multiple machines or data centers. A horizontal Operating System (OS) fabric is then used to integrate components of the data centers in a dynamic fashion, including for example integrating portal or Service Component Architecture (SCA) components into personality profiles that can be federated over many (e.g. thousands) of Java machines and data centers.

Abstract: An electronic media distribution/play system includes a service facility that has a communications network interface and maintains a data file catalog. The catalog is sent over the network to requesting users, and the system processes payments from customers in establishing file access authorizations. Encrypted user-selected files and a player program are transmitted to each customer for metered access to received data files as limited by the authorization, and customers can make additional selections and play the encrypted files freely while the authorization remains established. The system can transmit the data files from local storage, and also provide links to encrypted files that are stored at remote vendor facilities. Authorizations can be for selected portions or class levels of the catalog, and for terms measured as calendar time, play time, and collective number of plays. Also disclosed is a method for facilitating the distribution and accessing of electronic files.

Abstract: A query processing system has a query processor and a data manager. The query processor calls the data manager to carry out data access for a query including a filtering operation. The data manager accesses the data in a set of data and before returning the data, initiates a callback to the query processor to determine if the located data meets the filtering criteria. Where the data does not satisfy the filtering criteria, the data manager seeks additional data in the set of data, without having to return the first located data to the query processor.

Abstract: A search query is resolved prior to being submitted to one or more search engines. The query is resolved such that the query unambiguously corresponds to a category included in a query ontology that relates search queries to query categories. The query may be resolved by supplementing the query with additional information corresponding to the category. For example, the query may be formatted into a canonical form of the query for the category. Alternatively or additionally, the query may be supplemented with one or more keywords that are associated with the category and that represent words or phrases that appear in a high percentage of search results for queries from the category. Resolving the query yields search results that more closely reflect search results desired by a user submitting the query.

Abstract: Optimization constraints are used to select an appropriate content item from an available group of content items which are ordered in a specific manner to facilitate the proper selection of the content item, even if the exact item desired is not present. The server is then able to insert the selected content item into the outgoing content page requested by the client. The optimization constraints can be, but are not limited to, anyone of the following: communication channel performance (bandwidth), client operating system, client processor, client display capabilities, client installed software (video or audio codecs for example), and/or user preferences. A software product and method enable selective delivery of content to client devices of varying performance characteristics, including varying bandwidth, by selective filtering and inclusion of markup language content using tags demarcating optional content. An optimization constraint is used to select one of the items.

Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for delivering an alert from a mobile alerting system using distributed notification delivery. The method uses a mobile alerting system to receive an alert initiation request from an alert operator, where the alert initiation request includes metadata of an alert to be delivered. Abstract: The claimed subject matter provides a method and a system for the efficient indexing of error tolerant set containment. An exemplary method comprises obtaining a frequency threshold and a query set. All tokens or token sets within the query set are determined, and then all minimal infrequent tokens or all minimal infrequent tokens sets of data records are found and used to build an index. The minimal infrequent tokens or minimal infrequent tokensets are processed in a fixed order, and then a collection of signatures for each minimal infrequent token or token set is determined.

Abstract: Access to a resource may be controlled by a policy, such that a request to access the resource is either granted or denied based on what assertions have been made by various principals. To find the assertions that support a grant of access to the resource, a template may be created that defines the nature of assertions that would cause access to succeed. Assertions may be stored in the form of tokens. The template may be used to search an existing token store to find assertions that have been made, and/or to generate assertions that have not been found in the token store and that would satisfy the template. The assertions in the template may be created by performing an abductive reasoning process on an access query.

A browser-based prepare and post tool prepares and submits media objects from inside a standard browser to a remote server. A Media Acquisition, Processing and Distribution (MAPD) system receives these media objects, processes them to meet specific requirements, and delivers them for integration into remote databases. MAPD system services include media object submission, processing, hosting and mirroring. The hosting service delivers a media object URL to a remote database, allowing the media object to be requested and served by the media object server.

Abstract: Expert system may utilize multiple metrics to estimate whether a performance improvement activity has a potential to improve performance in respect to a predetermined performance metric. The multiple metrics may be propagated based on whether or not they may be affected by the activity and based on an associated value that may take into account the current value of the metric. An Index Propagation Graph may be further utilized to represent a propagation function which may propagate the potential of improvement of each metric in respect to the predetermined performance metric.

A custom zooming application determines an input specifying a level of zoom for rendering a geographic representation presented at a device, the geographic representation including a plurality of objects. The custom zooming application determines to render one or more of the plurality of objects with at least one different level of visibility with respect to other ones of the plurality of objects based, at least in part, on the respective degrees of relevance, the level of zoom, or a combination thereof.

Abstract: Disclosed in a method and structure for searching data in databases using an ensemble of models. First the invention performs training. This training orders models within the ensemble in order of prediction accuracy and joins different numbers of models together to form sub-ensembles. The models are joined together in the sub-ensemble in the order of prediction accuracy. Next in the training process, the invention calculates confidence values of each of the sub-ensembles. The confidence is a measure of how closely results form the sub-ensemble will match results from the ensemble. The size of each of the sub-ensembles is variable depending upon the level of confidence, while, to the contrary, the size of the ensemble is fixed. After the training, the invention can make a prediction. First, the invention selects a sub-ensemble that meets a given level of confidence.

Thus, a quantified abstraction of the event is composed as a pair: the abstracted predicate and a mapping between the free variable and an instance of the constant symbol that corresponds to the predicate. A data mining algorithm is executed over abstracted, quantified events to ascertain a correlation between the event and another event.

Abstract: An employee tracking system is disclosed, in which processing, accessing or both within the system is determined according to the hierarchical structure of the underlying organization. Each employee is associated with a node in the organization, and access to employee-related data is based upon the node associated with the requester and the node of the employee being checked, as well as the type of data being requested. Employees may clock into and out of work using mobile devices that interface with the employee tracking system host computer.

Abstract: A preemptive neural network database load balancer configured to observe, learn and predict the resource utilization that given incoming tasks utilize. Allows for efficient execution and use of system resources. Preemptively assigns incoming tasks to particular servers based on predicted CPU, memory, disk and network utilization for the incoming tasks. Direct write-based tasks to a master server and utilizes slave servers to handle read-based tasks. Read-base tasks are analyzed with a neural network to learn and predict the amount of resources that tasks will utilize. Tasks are assigned to a database server based on the predicted utilization of the incoming task and the predicted and observed resource utilization on each database server. The predicted resource utilization may be updated over time as the number of records, lookups, images, PDFs, fields, BLOBs and width of fields in the database change over time.

Abstract: A communication device management program that enables efficient use of memory space in receiving data using remote direct memory access (RDMA) techniques. The receiving node transmits a virtual ID corresponding to a receiving process to a remote sending node. A sending process in the sending node specifies this virtual ID when starting data transmission. If the receiving node has not reserved a memory area corresponding to that virtual ID, the sending node transmits a reservation request to the receiving node, which causes a data receiving memory area to be reserved for use by a communication device in the receiving node. In the sending node, the sending communication device begins sending transmission data in RDMA mode, from a memory area managed by the sending process to the reserved data receiving memory area. The receiving communication device directs incoming transmission data to a memory area managed by the receiving process.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus to determine statistical dominance point descriptors for multidimensional data are disclosed. An example method disclosed herein comprises determining a first joint dominance value for a first data point in a multidimensional data set, data points in the multidimensional data set comprising multidimensional values, each dimension corresponding to a different measurement of a physical event, the first joint dominance value corresponding to a number of data points in the multidimensional data set dominated by the first data point in every dimension, determining a first skewness value for the first data point, the first skewness value corresponding to a size of a first dimension of the first data point relative to a combined size of all dimensions of the first data point, and combining the first joint dominance and first skewness values to determine a first statistical dominance point descriptor associated with the first data point.

Abstract: In a copying operation, an MFP reads a code image printed on the paper, acquires a paper ID from the code image, acquires paper information associated with the paper ID, specifies an electronic document as a print source, and acquires the specified electronic document. The MFP prints a paper ID on the paper with the code image and the acquired electronic document, and stores paper information including a paper ID of a copy source in association with the paper ID. When a first MFP leaves an image processing system, respective information concerning electronic document acquisition managed by the first MFP is transferred to a second MFP.

Abstract: Techniques for efficiently authenticating multiple objects and clustering objects based on access patterns are provided. For example, in an illustrative aspect of the invention, a technique for generating and/or reading authentication information, wherein the authentication information provides evidence that a plurality of objects were one of generated and sent by an entity, comprises using one or more object access patterns indicative of whether at least two of the plurality of objects are accessed within a similar time period to group objects together to reduce an overhead for at least one of generating and reading the authentication information.

Abstract: A system for automatically managing information privacy includes an input system for receiving a request that includes a call for information in a bean and a purpose for the call, which indicates a manner an information requestor intends to use the information, wherein the call is to a method within the bean referencing at least one privacy control rule, which governs access and/or use of the information, that is packaged with the bean, the privacy control rule being additional to the information and methods of the bean and being packaged as an element of a deployment descriptor; and a privacy control system for automatically determining whether the request should be granted by comparing the purpose to the at least one privacy control rule to determine whether the purpose is valid, wherein the request is granted if the purpose complies with the at least one privacy control rule.
