  • Patent number: 9452993
Abstract: The invention relates to an integrated process for the production of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF), K2SO4, levulinic acid and formic acid from ?-carrageenan, the latter being obtained from fresh Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed biomass after expelling the juice. Mg(HSO4)2 was used in HMF synthesis, with co-production of galactose. The aqueous stream after HMF extraction was treated with the seaweed juice which process facilitated recovery of K2SO4 in pure form. The galactose may be utilised for synthesis of levulinic acid and formic acid before or after K2SO4 recovery or, alternatively, utilised for other purposes. Catalysts required in the synthetic reactions are generated in the process itself while the process energy required is met out of additional supplies of the seaweed biomass which is subjected to combustion/gasification.

  • Patent number: 8545591
Abstract: The present invention provides a new liquid fertilizer comprised of potassium sulfite and potassium bisulfite, with neutral to slightly alkaline pH, relatively lower salt index and potentially lower phytotoxicity damage compared to other sources of potassium and sulfur products applied in equal amounts as a starter fertilizer. More specifically, the present invention further relates to methods for fertilizing using a composition of potassium sulfite and potassium bisulfite, particularly as a starter fertilizer, in-furrow fertilizer, side dress fertilizer, and for foliar, broadcast, soil injection and fertigation applications. The fertilizer composition is comprised primarily of potassium sulfite and potassium bisulfite (with the fertilizer grade of 0-0-23-8S).

Abstract: A functional fertilizer composition containing natural mineral ingredients and a method of preparing the same are disclosed. More particularly, a functional fertilizer composition that is environmentally friendly, significantly accelerates growth of plants, relieves physiological disorders, is suitable for use as an agent for odor removal and a gas generation inhibitor, and enables preparation of a soil conditioner from a residue from which mineral ingredients are extracted and a method of preparing the same are disclosed. To this end, the method includes pulverizing vermiculite, mixing the pulverized vermiculite with water, adding sulfur or sulfuric acid to the mixture of pulverized vermiculite and water, stirring the mixture to which sulfur or sulfuric acid has been added, aging the stirred mixture to prepare an aqueous solution, and separating and extracting an aqueous solution containing mineral ingredients from the prepared aqueous solution.

  • Patent number: 8491693
Abstract: This invention is directed to systems, devices and methods to beneficiate heat-dried biosolids or sludge pellets or granules as presently manufactured by municipalities or companies from a) dewatered municipal wastewater biosolids or sludges within the municipal wastewater treatment plant heat-dried biosolids production facility or from b) finished dry heat dried biosolids pellets or granules in a separate manufacturing facility from the municipal wastewater treatment plant to produce a fertilizer containing sufficient organic and inorganic plant nutrients to be valuable and saleable into the commercial agricultural industry. The present invention describes beneficiation methods to increase the plant nutrient content of the fertilizer and also to reduce the odors associated with traditionally-produced heat dried biosolids.

  • Patent number: 8470065
Abstract: The invention describes a new method for the production of high nitrogen organically-augmented inorganic fertilizer that incorporates municipal biosolids or organic sludges that can compete with traditional fertilizers such as ammonium phosphate, ammonium sulfate and urea on the commodity fertilizer marketplace. The method creates a thixotropic paste-like material from the biosolids or organic sludge that is blended with hot or molten ammonium salts, especially a mixture of ammonium phosphate and ammonium sulfate. The invention can be an add-on to commercial production of ammonium salts or it can stand alone by manufacturing ammonium salts prior to their introduction to the conditioned biosolids. The invention is oriented to be tailored to production facilities for individual municipal waste treatment plants in order to keep manufacturing plants small with a minimization of logistics and liability.

Abstract: An agrichemical is disclosed having increased bio-activity which is adapted for spray application in a form which offers reduced aerial drift and improved deposition on organisms, reduced agglomeration and gellation problems, is adapted for use with chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers and allows for lower agrichemical use rates. Various adjuvants and surfactants are combined with fertilizers or pesticides, such as herbicides fungicides and insecticides, to reduce application problems relating to droplet size, foaming, chemical stability, plant and area coverage, droplet drift, surface tension, suspension, incompatability, phytoxicity, solubility, volatilization and evaporation, while providing enhanced bio-efficacy and low aquatic toxicity. Purifying the agrichemical composition water source by any of various known processes such as oxidation, ultra-filtration, deionization, reverse osmosis or nanofiltration lowers or removes alkaline components, such as calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium, etc.

Abstract: A granular cohered MOP fertilizer having one or more micronutrients, and one or more binding ingredients. The fertilizer is prepared by compacting MOP feed material with one or more micronutrients and one or more optional binders to form a cohered MOP composition. The cohered MOP composition is then further processed, such as by crushing and sizing, to form a cohered granular MOP product containing micronutrients. The process yields a fertilizer product containing micronutrients with superior elemental and granule size distribution without comprising handling or storage qualities.

  • Patent number: 8361186
Abstract: The invention provides for methods, devices, and systems for pyrolyzing biomass. A pyrolysis unit can be used for the pyrolysis of biomass to form gas, liquid, and solid products. The biomass materials can be selected such that an enhanced biochar is formed after pyrolysis. The biomass can be pyrolyzed under specified conditions such that a selected biochar core is formed. The pyrolysis process can form a stable biochar core that is inert and/or resistant to degradation. The biochar or biochar core can be functionalized to form a functionalized biochar or functionalized biochar core. Functionalization can include post-pyrolysis treatments such as supplementation with microbes or physical transformations including annealing and/or activation.

  • Patent number: 8287830
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for preparing ammonium bicarbonate with flue gas and device thereof. The method includes quantitatively collecting flue gas with a carbon dioxide concentration of about 8% to about 15% (volume), decreasing the temperature of the flue gas to about 50° C. or less with an air-cooling apparatus, then increasing the pressure of the flue gas to about 0.4 to about 1.2 MPa, and finally allowing the flue gas to react with liquid ammonia to produce ammonium bicarbonate. The device for preparing ammonium bicarbonate with flue gas includes a flue gas collecting apparatus, an air-cooling apparatus, a gas storing and pressurizing apparatus and an ammonium bicarbonate synthesizing apparatus. The issue of energy consumption brought by conventional cooling approach using cooling water is addressed by using an air-cooling apparatus.

  • Patent number: 8282898
Abstract: A process for formulating high purity potassium chloride from a carnallite source. The process takes advantage of solubility differences and saturation levels in a multiple salt system generated upon dissolution of carnallite. In the system, the sodium chloride is kept in solution and the magnesium chloride present in the system is controlled to be in a concentration range of between 12% and 25% by weight. This avoids co-precipitation of sodium chloride with the potassium chloride during crystallization and therefore prevents the sodium chloride from contaminating the potassium chloride. The result is high grade potassium chloride.
