In one aspect, a method includes the actions of receiving data identifying one or more documents to include in a dossier. The actions further include receiving a request to modify the dossier. Abstract: In various example embodiments, a system and method for transforming instructions for collaborative updates are described herein. A group of instructions for an update of an element depicted in a client device version of a user interface are generated. The group of instructions is executed and the group or a subset of instructions are transmitted to a server. The server accepts or rejects the instructions. The server may execute the instructions to update a server version of the element. The server sends accepted instructions to the other or all client devices.

A number of functions modify layout and transformations, and those functions are available for invocation, e.g. through mouse gestures or key combinations. Users are graphically represented by displays comprising photographic likenesses. Groups can be shown as individual users. Giving someone access to a resource can be as easy as dragging that person's likeness. Access log information can be shown together with access control settings. Reviewing the subset of resources available to a user is made easier. Overflow indicators replace scroll bars. Macros effect snapshots of volatile sets of users. Sections within documents can be omitted automatically if a user lacks authorization. Access control settings for one resource can be linked to be dependent on settings for other resources.

Abstract: A method for digitally tearing out an article from a digital magazine is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method is realized by splitting the whole digital magazine into separate articles based on the digital magazine's meta-data, providing a user interface for users to take action of tearing out an article, checking the tear-out request against the article's tear-out policy, and retrieving and adding the article to the user's collection if the request is granted.

Abstract: A method of facilitating the self-administration of a directory of available modules on a group's syndicated customizable content document or start page is presented. The method includes presenting an initial list of modules to an administrator of a group, enabling the administrator to identify module selection information that identifies criteria for inclusion and/or exclusion of one or more modules in a directory, and storing the module selection information identified by the administrator. When a user of the group accesses a customized content document, the user is presented with a modified list of available modules based on the module selection information. Using this method, the administrator is capable of excluding modules from a global list, including only a specific subset of modules, or a combination of both. A system of carrying out the method is also presented.

A request is sent to another computing device to determine whether to authorize access by the entity to the requested location information. Abstract: Method and system for overlaying videos in a television include: receiving a plurality of video signals directly from a plurality of video sources by the television; receiving and processing a script by the television, the script includes instructions for placing a first picture from a first video signal of the plurality of video signals in a first position at a first depth value on a display coupled to the television, and instructions for placing a second picture from a second video signal of the plurality of video signals in a second position at a second depth value on the display; and simultaneously displaying the first picture and the second picture on the display by the television in an overlayed manner, the first picture being displayed at the first position and at the first depth value, the second picture being displayed at the second position and at the second depth value.

Abstract: In a method for composing and presenting information in a user context, the information shall be presented for the user on a man-machine interface in the form of a visual or graphic display. The method comprises steps for determining a user context in which the information is required, selecting a set of content sources, and the content components are retrieved from the content sources. The information in selected content components are computed using an information measure that reflects the information as perceived by human cognition, and an optimum presentation of the selected content components are determined and presented for the user.

Abstract: The invention relates to which source of multimedia information a user can and may access through a number of devices like gateways, servers, media controllers and presentation devices like AV systems, remote commanders, cell phones, media players e.g. an IPod and alike. The access is considered to be multilayer access principle through a chain of media devices from the source, via gateways and destination devices up to a personal handheld portable device in front of the user. The access control method to be used in a multiuser and multi domain environment.

Abstract: A virtual machine (VM) is accessed by receiving user log-in information, the log-in information identifying a user and a corresponding VM, the VM having a local copy and a remote copy. A selected copy of the VM is identified based on at least one of a policy and a user selection, the selected copy being one of the local copy and the remote copy of the VM. A desktop generated by the selected copy of the VM is presented to the user in a common application graphical user interface, the common application graphical user interface being used regardless as to whether the selected copy of the VM is the local copy or the remote copy.

Abstract: A method for supporting versions of a menu includes identifying menu items for an application. The menu items are in a first menu and have state data used by functions to perform operations. The method includes generating indices from the menu items, generating a first table that includes the indices and the functions, and generating a second table that includes a portion of the indices. The indices in the first table correspond to the functions, the portion defines a subset of menu items for a second menu, and the portion of the indices corresponds to a portion of the state data. When an operation is to be performed, an index for the subset of menu items is used to determine state data corresponding to the index in the second table, and the index is used to determine a function corresponding to the index in the first table.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a selection process executing in an optimizing engine is invoked as users are presented with web pages that include ad content. The selection process provides an initial population of sets of characteristics that specify an initial generation of layouts of ads for the pages. The characteristics can include anything that affects an ads appearance on the display. For example, ad type, position within a web page, color, size, text font, animation, etc. can be specified. Statistics are obtained as to each ad or page layout's performance or impact on the user, such as revenue obtained from ads in the layout, how many user's click an ad, how long users view an ad, etc. Once a large enough sample of user impacts is obtained a second population of sets of characteristics is created to improve the overall performance of the initial population.

Abstract: Users of a collaborative online forum may be evaluated automatically with the results made available to a supervisor. In an example embodiment, a method involves accessing multiple posts that are associated with multiple users, with each post of the multiple posts including content. Post scores for the multiple posts are ascertained based on one or more features. User interactions are analyzed with regard to the multiple posts to identify relationships among the multiple users and the content included in the multiple posts. The post scores and the user interactions are evaluated to determine respective collaboration scores for respective users of the multiple users. A user interface that provides access to the collaboration scores is presented to a supervisor.

Abstract: Method and system for conditionally transmitting changes to information in a collaborative environment are provided. A system comprises a display, a change tracking module, and a rendering module. The change tracking module is configured to detect changes by a modifying user to information as a propagating or a non-propagating change. The rendering module transmits first view data to enable altering a first view based on the modification as part of a graphical user interface on the display presented to the modifying user and transmits second view data to enable altering a second view presented to a group of users, not including the modifying user, based on the modification if the modification comprises the propagating change. The second view data is not transmitted if the modification comprises the non-propagating change.

Abstract: A method for synchronizing different components of a computer network system using meta-commands embedded in normal network packets. The data communication channel between different components of a computer network system can be used to transport meta-commands piggybacked in normal network packets, without modifying or compromising the validity of the protocol message. Embodiments of the method can be used for embedding test synchronization and control commands into the network packets sent through a device or system under test. The device or system under test can be an edge device, with the data communication channel carrying normal packets containing meta-commands embedded in the packets to synchronize the test control of the test clients and the test servers connected to the edge device.

An exemplary embodiment generates image information from a series of captured images, generates commands based upon hand gestures made by a user that emulate device commands generated by a remote control device, identifies a hand gesture made by the user from the received image information, determines a hand gesture command based upon the identified hand gesture, compares the determined hand gesture command with the plurality of predefined hand gesture commands to identify a corresponding matching hand gesture command from the plurality of predefined hand gesture commands, generates an emulated remote control device command based upon the identified matching hand gesture command, and controls the media device based upon the generated emulated remote control device command.

Abstract: A user-centric management application system and method for a security system that conceptualizes the security devices and the tasks to perform on the security devices as separate objects with common properties and behavior. Operators of the system create abstract containers, called dockviews, which the operator adds objects to in order to perform specific tasks. Because the operator assigns user access to dockviews and objects, the system tailors system access for both application users and tenants of the security system based on policy objectives. Dockviews have the ability to open in separate application windows to support priority display and isolation of critical management tasks. The system provides integrated user administration, event management and reports capability, a consistent “look and feel,” and system-wide automated event notification via a watchlist window.

Abstract: A user maintains notification setting information having temporal periods capable of controlling, at least in part, the dissemination of information describing the on-line presence of the user within an instant messaging system or the geographic location of one or more mobile communications devices used by the user. The user may use multiple identities to communicate within the instant messaging system and/or with the mobile communications device or devices. The user can maintain sets of temporal periods for each of the multiple identities. Only one identity may be used at a specific time to communicate to a specific other identity, but the multiple identities of the user may be linked such that on-line presence and/or geographic location associated with one of the identities is disseminated based on the temporal periods set for one or more of the multiple identities.

For example, a computing device executes processes associated with a plurality of active user profiles of the computing device, and determines that an aggregate memory allocation of the plurality of active user profiles exceeds a threshold. Responsive to the determining, the computing device selects an active user profile for which to stop activity and automatically stops the activity associated with the selected active user profile.

Abstract: A system for and method of enhancing web page delivery and visitor tracking. The invention provides the ability to control redirection of Web traffic of humans. It can identify visitors to a Web page, track their movements, log critical information, and analyze the Web traffic in order to judge the success in driving quality traffic to some known goal on a Web site, such as a sale. The system tracks visitors via use of redirection with an image tag. The invention can also use unique image marker references to prevent browsers from accessing cached images.

Abstract: An authentication method in a system having a display and a storage device is provided. The authentication method includes the steps of registering an object selected for each user from among a plurality of visually distinguishable objects prepared in advance as a key object in the storage device; and presenting the plurality of objects to the display, accepting selection of an object by a user to be authenticated, and performing authentication based on matching/mismatching of the selected object with the key object registered in association with the user. The step of registering includes a step of determining a degree of freedom of selection of the object at the time of registration of the key object according to a degree of overlapping of the key object already registered in the storage device.

Abstract: An Activity Access Control (AAC) utility controls access to applications and devices by allowing an administrator to set terms of use/access regarding a applications and/or devices for a group of users, whose activity are monitored. The AAC utility also enables administrator and user access to a compromise facility via a centralized access point to establish or request changes to the terms of use/access. The AAC utility allows the administrator to dynamically update information and set terms based on real-time information collected during activity monitoring. Dynamic updates may also occur based on the monitored user's request, the priority of the requesting user(s), historical data, occurrence of a special event, completion of other internal or/external tasks, and/or pre-set limitations or thresholds. In addition, the AAC utility facilitates the real-time display or publishing of the terms of use, status information, and statistical information to users and the administrator.

Abstract: A control system and method is described having a framework in which many applications in a user interaction system (UIS) can share common data regardless of which application obtained the data and all without prior knowledge of the other applications. The shared data is typically personal data of the current user, such as name, location, preferences, etc. However, the system can also be used to share style sheets, announcements, etc., that can be utilized by multiple applications. The data is stored in a standardized manner in a location available to any application. Application's have access to the data based upon user privileges at any particular time.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method for distinguishing a live actor from an automation is described. A user request to access a service is received, and, in response, the user is presented with a minority set of N objects and a majority set of >N objects. The majority set includes objects sharing at least one common attribute expected to be apparent to a human observer absent among objects associated with the minority set. The user is requested to identify at least one object, from among the objects associated with the minority or majority set, that satisfies a predetermined criterion and in response an indication of a selection of at least one object is received. Whether the user-selected object satisfies the predetermined criterion is determined and as is that the user is a human upon determining that the user-selected object satisfies the predetermined criterion.

Abstract: A web based platform and method is provided for facilitating content transactions between a provider and one or more users. Content transmitted from a content provider via a communications network and a customized graphical user interface, and stored on a database server in association with content data. Access to an identifier of the content is provided for users of the user interface, and value is received from one or more users in association with the content. In response to the received value, selective access to the content by one or more users is provided, with the access for a particular user determined based on the content data. The content data in various embodiments may include a value threshold for the content, with access provided to all users or a set of users after a cumulative value received exceeds the value threshold.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to teleporting avatars between disparate virtual worlds. A system is disclosed that includes a facility for creating a persona profile for an avatar in a first virtual world when the avatar wants to be teleported out of the first virtual world; a facility for transferring persona profiles to and from a disparate virtual world; and a facility for instantiating an inbound avatar based on a received persona profile. Persona profiles may include, e.g., rendering information, trait information, and inventory information.
