Abstract: To improve the consumer experience with portable electronic devices, a user interface combines the use of capacitive sensors with tactile sensors in an input device. When a user places a finger, stylus, or other input instrument near a given key button, a capacitive sensor causes the display to display temporarily an indication of the function of that key in an enlarged format. The user may then press the associated key button to activate the desired function. In one exemplary embodiment, the capacitive sensor fixes the functionality to the function indicated in the display. Abstract: A VCI (visual context indicator) color is assigned deterministically and proactively at runtime to user data contexts, and is not stored in the database, spreadsheet, or other context. VCI colors can be high contrast friendly colors. The same color is assigned to a given context each time the application runs unless the context's identifying property has changed. Color assignments are not made by users or by the application's designer, but are done instead by hashing from a context's identifying property into a VCI color palette containing, e.g., eight to sixteen colors. Unlike text-selection coloring, VCI coloring is based on the user data context's identifying property. The color assignment visually indicates context by displaying the context's name in the VCI color, or by displaying a graphical element in the VCI color near the context name. VCI color assignment also shows the occurrence and result of changes in user data context.

Abstract: A method and system for generating an electronic note on a handheld electronic device. Specifically, the present invention allows a user to push one button on the handheld device to gain access to a cleared screen where ideas, telephone numbers, etc. can be written down directly on the screen in the user's own handwriting in the form of a note. Additionally, the note is automatically time and date stamped. Furthermore, a title associated with the note is displayed concurrently with the note and can be modified using digitized alphanumeric characters. Moreover, the note is automatically stored in the handheld electronic device. Also, an alarm, associated with a particular time and date relative to the electronic device, can be electronically assigned to the note. At the particular time and date associated with the alarm, the alarm is automatically triggered, and the note is automatically displayed on the handheld electronic device.

  • Patent number: 8922579

  • Patent number: 8909642
Abstract: Embodiments are directed towards automatically generating extraction rules for extracting fields from event records. An extraction rule application receives field data describing the fields to be extracted (including one or more examples) and a collection of event records that may be a representative sample set from a larger set of events records. The extraction rule application generates extraction rules based on the event records and the field data. These extraction rules may be ranked using a determined quality score. Quality scores for extraction rules may be determined based on various metrics related to the operation of the extraction rules and the resultant extracted values. Preferred extraction rules may be determined by ranking the extraction rules based on their quality scores. Also, natural language expressions may be used to create, edit, or modify extraction rules.

Abstract: Systems and methods for gesture repetition that is easy to repeat quickly. A user is able to quickly repeat any activation of a key, including any of the alternate, overloaded functions that are associated with the key. In addition, by appropriately defining the gesture, a large number of these repetitions can be quickly generated. These repeated activations can be generated much faster than a key can be repeatedly tapped with sufficient accuracy, and far faster than an alternative function can be repeatedly generated when each repetition would require again waiting past an initial time threshold. Furthermore, the number of repetitions can be easily and precisely controlled by the user. As the desired number of repetitions is approached, the user simply begins to repeat the gesture at a slower pace until precisely the desired number of repetitions is achieved.
