  • Patent number: 7743636
Abstract: The invention is a rotary draw bending machine and process for bending materials such as tubes or pipes into precise bends. A spindle holds a bending die, and a radial arm holds a counter-die. The spindle and arm are simultaneously rotated in opposite directions by a dual hydraulic drive controlled by an electro-hydraulic control system with foot pedal controls. The bend angle is preset by a protractor-like dial and limit switch mechanism. The radial arm has a slide track to align the counter-die with the bending die. The ratchet mechanism has teeth to allow incremental advancement of the counter-die when aligning it with its bending die to accurately set the gap between the dies. The machine is used with a wide variety of dies to bend a wide variety of workpiece diameters. The ratchet mechanism preferably includes a fine tuning device to provide an infinite range of alignment positions.

  • Patent number: 7584637
Abstract: A method of bending a metal object, such as a tube, is provided that uses real time, closed-loop feedback of the actual springback of the object in order to modify the applied bending force or preprogrammed bending coordinates so that the final desired bend geometry is achieved. The variability of springback from object to object is thus accounted for and the number of objects that must be scrapped due to incorrect bends (over bend or under bend) is reduced. The method is carried out using an apparatus such as a rotary draw bender with a measuring device operable to measure actual bend coordinates of metal objects bent by the bender. A controller is operatively connected to the bender and the measuring device and is configured to control the bender to bend the metal objects at least partly based on measured bend coordinates provided by the measuring device.

  • Patent number: 7131309
Abstract: A bending system comprising a series of bending stations, each equipped with a bending head. Workpieces are conveyed from one bending station to the next by grippers suspended from a two-axis gantry, that preferably grasp the workpiece at an intermediate portion. Each bending head grasps the tube at a different intermediate position, and in the preferred embodiment each bending station is capable of rotating to position the bending dye such that the free end of the workpiece being bent can be oriented in the bending plane without interference by an adjacent bending station. These features reduce the space requirements of the system considerably. A multi-level dispensing apparatus may be provided to load the bending heads. The bending system is preferably operated by computer, allowing the bending of long workpieces to precise configurations under the control of a single operator.

Abstract: A cam assembly for mounting a pressure die to the arm of a standard pipe bending machine. The assembly comprises a base with a pivot post extending upwardly therefrom. A cam shaft has an off-center opening adapted to receive the pivot post. A pivot assembly is combined with the pressure die and has an opening adapted to receive the cam shaft so that movement of the cam shaft around the pivot post changes the position of the pressure die relative to the bending machine's arm. Movement of the pivot assembly around the cam shaft swings the pressure die out of the way to load and unload the pipe being bent.

Abstract: A concentric bore bend die and clamp insert assembly including a bend die and a clamp insert positioned within a recess formed in the bend die in a tube clamping area of the bend die. The clamp insert includes a curved portion matingly received within a correspondingly shaped curved bore in the recess, such that the curved portion extends between a tube groove in the insert and the curved bore. The curved portion of the clamp insert and the curved bore are radially concentric in order to evenly disperse clamping pressures exerted on the clamp insert in all radial directions across the curved portion of the clamp insert to the curved bore. The clamp insert further includes a non-circular portion that is matingly received within a correspondingly shaped non-circular region of the recess in order to resist rotational movement of the clamp insert with respect to the bend die.
