  • Patent number: 9802245
Abstract: A method of casting a metal ingot with a microstructure that facilitates further working, such as hot and cold rolling. The metal is cast in a direct chill casting mold, or the equivalent, that directs a spray of coolant liquid onto the outer surface of the ingot to achieve rapid cooling. The coolant is removed from the surface at a location where the emerging embryonic ingot is still not completely solid, such that the latent heat of solidification and the sensible heat of the molten core raises the temperature of the adjacent solid shell to a convergence temperature that is above a transition temperature for in-situ homogenization of the metal. A further conventional homogenization step is then not required. The invention also relates to the heat-treatment of such ingots prior to hot working.

Abstract: A flat rolling stock is first rolled in a rolling mill from an initial thickness to an intermediate thickness, and then from the intermediate thickness to a final thickness. In order to roll the rolling stock from the initial thickness to the intermediate thickness, a number of reduction stages is determined and the rolling stock is rolled accordingly. Further, a permissible thickness range for the intermediate thickness is set using technological boundary conditions. The reduction stages are determined such that the intermediate thickness is within the permissible thickness range and either the performance limits of the rolling mill are completely utilized in every reduction stage, or not completely utilized in at least one reduction stage; however, in the event that the number of reduction stages were reduced by one, the intermediate thickness would be outside of the permissible thickness range, although the performance limits of the rolling mill would be completely utilized for all reduction stages.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a finishing train for hot-rolling starting material. Starting material is finished in several successive roll stands (110 n) in the finishing train, the material cooling off because of heat loss. The material has to be reheated in order for the temperature of the material not to drop below the predefined lower threshold temperature value at low speeds within and at the discharge end of the finishing train. In order to use as little energy as possible for said reheating process, the reheating process within the finishing train is carried out for the first time only when the temperature of the material risks falling below the lower threshold temperature value for the first time relative to the direction of flow of the material because of heat loss.
