Abstract: The mill comprises essentially a roughing train having a reversing roughing stand or stands and a finishing train having a reversing finishing stand or in-line finishing stands, the roughing and finishing trains being disposed with pass lines parallel to each other and at different elevations, the work in the roughing train progressing in the opposite direction from the work in the finishing train. The roughing train for strip and light plate is provided with a hot upcoiler at each end positioned above the table so that slabs and breakdowns pass beneath them, but adapted to coil and payout strip of coiling gauge. The delivery end of the roughing train is laterally opposite the entry end of the finishing train and separate mechanisms are provided for transferring coils and plate broadside from roughing train to finishing train.

Abstract: A beam blank for a large size H-beam is produced firstly by forming flat slab into a preformed beam blank by a two-high rolling mill and subsequently by rolling the preformed beam blank by a universal roughing mill.
Abstract: An installation for the production of continuously cold rolled sheets or strips wherein the continuous operation is effected when a coil of the cold rolled sheet metal or strip is directly and effectively produced from a coil of the hot rolled sheet metal or strip.
Abstract: Metal strip tensioning apparatus for use in a continuous cold reduction method and mill for metal strip in which the trailing end of a metal strip passing through the mill is welded to the leading end of a metal strip coming off a new coil without stopping the mill, the trailing end portion of the metal strip passing through the mill being paid out from a metal strip storage system during the welding operation with a resulting loss of close control of the lateral metal strip position at the entry side of the first mill stand, the present invention providing a method and means associated with a metal strip back tensioning unit ahead of the first mill stand for correcting the lateral position of the metal strip issuing from the metal strip storage system while applying the tension of the metal strip in the metal strip storage system to the metal strip entry side of the back tensioning unit.
Abstract: In producing a titanium strip using a continuous hot strip mill, the invention discloses a method of producing a titanium hot coil by a continuous hot rolling system characterized by the steps of heating a titanium slab to 700.degree.-950.degree. C. inside a heating furnace, then performing the hot rolling, and winding the hot rolled strip in a coil form while the strip is kept at a temperature of not lower than 450.degree. C. under a condition that at the time of taking up the leading portion of the resulting titanium hot rolled strip after hot rolling, its trailing portion is being caught by the final stand roll of a finishing mill of the continuous hot strip mill.
Abstract: An apparatus for bending sheet metal wherein a plurality of forming rolls are utilized. The rolls are situated at succeeding stations, and a first bending station includes a roll having forming protrusions in spaced apart relationship on the roll surface. The roll also defines drive elements which are engageable by the sheet so that movement of the sheet against a roll drive element operates to drive the roll and to thus move a forming protrusion into contact with the sheet for bending the sheet. Shift means are associated with this roll for locating the drive elements and protrusions in different positions to thereby control the particular drive element engaged by the sheet whereby the particular forming protrusion which performs the bending function can be pre-selected.
Abstract: The method of gaplessly separating and identifying successive rolling lots of ingots or blooms in a production process for making tubes or the like wherein the stock is introduced into a furnace for heating and in a production line subsequently rolled, which comprises radio-actively marking the first or the last ingot of a given rolling lot of ingots at its subsequently lost end prior to being introduced into the furnace. A further step includes interposing a radio-active radiation responsive signal device in said production line before rolling. Apparatus for carrying out said method includes a device for imparting radioactivity to an ingot in advance of a rotary hearth furnace. Radiation counter-tubes are located in advance of a taper mill and a continuous rolling mill respectively. Further counter-tubes are arranged in advance of a stretch reducing or sizing mill.
Abstract: A roller guide for guiding rod or wire stock between a pair of rolls which shape the stock. The roller guide includes a pair of guide rollers which are adapted to engage the opposite surface portions of the stock and are mounted for rotation on a guide housing for rotation about substantially parallel axes. The guide housing is mounted upon a base. Fine adjustment means is included for effecting a fine adjustment of the position of the guide housing relative to the base in order to effect fine adjustment of the guide rollers. The fine adjustment means includes a member which is fixedly supported by the guide housing, a movable adjustment member and resilient means interposed between the member fixed on the guide housing and the movable adjustment member, which yields to enable movement of the guide housing and of both of the rollers to occur in response to forces applied to the rollers.
