  • Patent number: 8490447
Abstract: In a method and a control device for adjusting a state of a rolling stock, particularly a near-net strip, defined at least by an out-of-parallel condition and/or a curvature of the rolling stock, the rolling stock is transitioned from an initial into an intermediate state by a roll stand and by impressing a stress onto the rolling stock by an additional processing device, and the rolling stock is transitioned from the intermediate into a final state by at least one processing aggregate. By determining whether rolling stock should be fed into the at least one processing aggregate, the intermediate state requiring a non-zero out-of-parallel condition and/or curvature in order to achieve a predetermined final state, and the roll stand and/or the processing device are controlled and/or regulated as a function thereof to adjust the required intermediate state, the shape reliability of an ultimately parallel, non-curved rolling stock can be increased.

  • Patent number: 5558018
Abstract: A frame structure for calenders in a paper machine in which two vertical legs are horizontally connected to one another. The calender rolls are mounted, one above the other, between the vertical legs so that the upper roller is fixed vertically while the lower roller is able to slide vertically. A loading cylinder is used to move the lower cylinder vertically within the frame. The loading cylinder is mounted on a beam structure which is attached at its ends to the inner walls of the frame legs. The beam structure is shaped so that it is able to flex or pivot relative to the frame's legs so that only vertical forces are transmitted to the frame and transmission of bending moments from the beam structure to the frame structure and the foundation is substantially eliminated.

  • Patent number: 4781050
Abstract: A process and apparatus for producing increased reductions in strip material, particularly soft metal strip materials, are disclosed. The process and apparatus utilize a rolling mill having at least two offset work rolls driven at a peripheral speed ratio less than a desired gage reduction ratio but greater than zero and a mechanism for applying forward tension to the strip material. The desired gage reduction may be obtained using reduced separating force magnitudes and minimized tension force magnitudes. The rolling mill utilizes relatively small diameter work rolls without having to provide additional support structures other than the back-up rolls and frame roll supports to prevent roll bending in the rolling direction. Roll flattening is substantially eliminated resulting in improved gage control and strip flatness.

  • Patent number: 4759205
Abstract: A multi-pass rolling method which permits a multi-pass rolling-mill stand to perform multi-path rolling and still stabilize the rolling operation by preventing lateral deviation movement of a metal workpiece being rolled. The rolling-mill stand has three or more work rolls arranged one above the other and the workpiece is simultaneously rolled at two or more points by at least one of the work rolls. Directly or indirectly roll gaps are detected on the work and drive sides of at least one pass by sensors. A difference signal from the output signals of the sensors is obtained thereby determining a roll gap difference. Control devices are provided which are responsive to the difference signal for independently changing the roll gaps on the work and drive sides.

  • Patent number: 4735074
Abstract: A multi-stage roll mill for producing a lengthy continuous rolled sheet material by a one-pass operation, comprises a driven central working roll, and a plurality of peripheral working rolls arranged spaced apart and on the periphery of the central working roll, the diameter of each of the peripheral working rolls being much smaller than that of the central working roll. Each peripheral working roll has a screw-down mechanism which is capable of freely adjusting the gap between the periphery of the peripheral working roll and the periphery of the central working roll. The peripheral working rolls are arranged in such a manner that the work being held in the gap between the peripheries thereof and the periphery of the central working roll is subjected to continuous multi-stage rolling.

  • Patent number: 4597275
Abstract: The calender comprises a predetermined number of rolls and at least one of the rolls, for example, the outer roll or the lowest roll of such predetermined number of rolls is structured as a tubular roll or controlled deflection roll comprising a stationary roll support member or beam and a roll shell which rotates about the stationary roll support member and is supported thereat. A position sensor determines the position of the roll shell which is regulated with respect to predetermined reference values by a regulating device. A pre-selected number of different reference values for the position of the roll shell are provided and by selecting an appropriate one of these reference values there is achieved the result that different numbers of the predetermined number of rolls are operative while the remaining rolls of such predetermined number of rolls bear against related stops so that their related roll nips or gaps remain open.

  • Patent number: 4478064
Abstract: A process for rolling a metal strip for reducing its thickness and for increasing the maximum reduction attainable per pass using a cooperative type rolling mill comprises applying differential separating forces to the metal strip without changing the magnitude of the compressive force applied to the rolls. By doing this, the maximum strip tension and the forward tension required to pull the strip through the mill may be reduced. The maximum strip tension and the required forward tension force may further be reduced by driving at least one work roll at a desired value of torque as well as applying differential separating forces. The cooperative type rolling mill uses a roll spacing arrangement to space at least some of the rolls for reducing the separating force applied to the metal strip at selected roll bites. In addition, individual drive motors to drive the work rolls at desired torque values may be utilized.

  • Patent number: 4382375
Abstract: Three or more work rolls are arranged substantially in line with each other so that the adjoining work rolls each form a roll pass between them. The work rolls are driven in such a way that the rolls closer to the exit end of the rolling mill stand rotate with increasingly greater peripheral speeds. Metal strip is continuously passed through each roll pass and is wound around part of the periphery of the work rolls disposed between the work rolls at both ends of the stand. Thus, the strip is rolled between each pair of the adjoining work rolls. The work rolls are also driven in such a way that at least in one of the pairs of the work rolls, the peripheral speed of the higher-speed work roll is greater than the speed with which the strip leaves the roll pass formed by the pair of work rolls.

  • Patent number: 4290353
Abstract: A roll which can be used in a calender to bear upon a web of textile material, paper or the like while the web travels between the peripheral surface of a floating shell of the roll and a counterroll. The shell surrounds a non-rotatable shaft which carries several rows of discrete electromagnets extending in parallelism with the axis of the shaft and along an arc of at least 200 degrees, as considered in the circumferential direction of the shaft. The electromagnets can be energized to a different extent so as to subject the magnetizable material of the shell to forces of different magnitude and to thus counteract the tendency of the shell to undergo deformation in response to the action of forces which act radially of the shell or which tend to impart to the shell vibratory movements. Additional electromagnets can be provided to cooperate with a radially inwardly extending flange at one end of the shell to hold the latter against excessive movements from an optimum axial position.
