    Abstract: A support assembly for coupling of a large-sized universal joint of the cardan type as incorporated in a drive assembly for rolling mills. The assembly supports the coupling on a drive spindle portion to prevent the coupling from hanging. A locking rod fixed to the center of the coupling extends through a hole of large diameter formed in the center of the spider of the universal joint, with a sufficient radial clearance provided between the rod and the inner periphery of the spider. The piston rod of a hydraulic cylinder disposed within an inner bore of the drive spindle portion operates to slidingly move a rod receiving member within the bore, thereby bringing a recess portion of the rod receiving member into engagement with or disengagement from the free end of the locking rod. The coupling is securely supported on the drive spindle portion by the engagement of the rod receiving member with the locking rod.

    Abstract: Reduction of bars or rods with reducing rolls of large diameter on arbors in which lateral pressure is applied to the reducing rolls to suppress rotation of the rolls relative to the arbor. The pressure is applied by an annular shoe on the arbor. The shoe and an annular fluid activator, on the arbor form, between their facing surfaces, a sealed annular chamber and also an annular gap. The gap is accessible through the peripheries of the activator and shoe. Axial movement of the activator outwardly of the rolls is restricted by a nut on the arbor. Grease is injected into the chamber under high pressure. The shoe and activator operate as a split cylinder impressing tensile stress on the arbor between the side of the shoe remote from the activator and the nut and causing the arbor in this region to elongate and also to impress compressive force on the roll and its axial components. This elongation enlarges the width of the gap.

For the replacement of the driven shafts, the upper and lower coupling members as supported in their horizontal position by the holding means are vertically moved in a given ratio relative to each other and thereby brought into alignment with new driven shafts.

    Abstract: In roll housings for rolling mills, it is desirable to be able to separate the top and bottom halves of the housing so as to be able to change the rolls. When the top and bottom halves are reassembled, they must be held firmly together to ensure correct operation of the rolling mill. It is proposed to have hydraulically-tensionable tie bars which are fixed in the lower half of the housing, and which grip the top of the upper half of the housing. Hydraulic fluid is applied to produce the tension, and the fluid pressure achieved is maintained throughout rolling operation. Such tie bars will normally be provided at at least four corners of a roll housing, and a single hydraulic circuit will supply fluid to all the bars. In addition, hydraulically operated jacks can be used to pivot the tie bars into and out of position, and these jacks can be operated from the same hydraulic circuit.

The inner bottom of the coupling is provided at its center with a fitting hole of large diameter and a number of taper rollers are disposed in an annular space which is defined between the cylindrical body and the fitting hole as a result of the fitting between the coupling and the driven shaft element, thereby automatically bringing the axes of the coupling the driven shaft element into alignment with each other and eliminating the problem of rotational vibration due to the loose fit between the coupling and the driven shaft element.

In the latter capacity, the beam contributes both in terms of its great weight and in terms of distributing clamping forces to the individual mill stands from a limited number of clamps.

To effect changing of the mill rolls, provision is made for moving the cap to a laterally offset position, while still supported on the basic mill structure, to permit access to the mill rolls by means of an overhead crane. In the new mill structure, provision for releasing and lateral offset movement of the mill cap is self-contained within the mill structure, so that the plant crane is not required to be utilized in removing the mill cap, as heretofore.

A multi-position magazine is provided for retaining a circulating supply of mandrel plugs such that, after each operation, the used mandrel plug may be returned to the magazine for cooling, and a new plug may be brought quickly into working position ready for the next operation.

In a second embodiment, a plurality of side-by-side pedestals extend along a passline. Each pedestal defines a separate rolling mill support surface with the support surfaces of adjacent pedestals lying in intersecting support planes. An improved rolling mill stand assembly is disclosed.
