With Means To Drive Tool Patents (Class 72/249)
  • Patent number: 4669294
Abstract: A rod or bar mill stand (72) is constructed to be used either in vertical or horizontal disposition. When in the horizontal disposition the rolls (3) are driven directly by the usual drive consisting of motor, pinion box and drive spindles which are arranged at the same general level as the stand. When the stand is in the vertical disposition, a drive adaptor (50) is introduced to transmit the drive from the drive spindles to universal spindles (71) arranged about the stand (72) to connect to the necks of the rolls (3).

  • Patent number: 4625536
Abstract: A set-up method for unequal speed circumferential rolling. The setting values of the circumferential speeds of a higher speed roll and a lower speed roll and the roll position are obtained by using, as rolling parameters in a rolling schedule, the inlet and outlet thicknesses, the forward and backward tensions, the radii of the rolls, the frictional coefficients and the ratio of the circumferential speeds of the rolls. The setting values are computed such that these values meet the rolling conditions within both the load limit value and the tension limit value.

  • Patent number: 4614099
Abstract: Upper and lower reducing rolls are mounted within a mill housing for rotation about their axes and for parallel movement. Actuating cylinders force the upper reducing roll downward toward the lower reducing roll to effect a separation force on a workpiece that is placed therebetween. Four direct drive motors, one directly coupled to each end of the upper and lower reducing rolls, counter-rotate the reducing rolls to drive the workpiece therebetween. The motors are synchronized within a close tolerance of a set speed to prevent torsion of one end of the reducing rolls relative to the opposite end. Preferably, the rolling mill includes closely enclosed backing rolls engaging the reducing rolls to prevent deflection of the reducing rolls under load. This allows the rolling mill to produce a flat workpiece over a wide range of separation forces by means of cylindrical reducing rolls.

  • Patent number: 4478064
Abstract: A process for rolling a metal strip for reducing its thickness and for increasing the maximum reduction attainable per pass using a cooperative type rolling mill comprises applying differential separating forces to the metal strip without changing the magnitude of the compressive force applied to the rolls. By doing this, the maximum strip tension and the forward tension required to pull the strip through the mill may be reduced. The maximum strip tension and the required forward tension force may further be reduced by driving at least one work roll at a desired value of torque as well as applying differential separating forces. The cooperative type rolling mill uses a roll spacing arrangement to space at least some of the rolls for reducing the separating force applied to the metal strip at selected roll bites. In addition, individual drive motors to drive the work rolls at desired torque values may be utilized.

Abstract: A vertical rolling mill is disclosed wherein a means for driving the mill rolls is comprised of a rigid vertical spindle having universal joints and couplings at either end which is detachably connected to the mill roll at its lower end and connected to a splined driving member at its upper end. The splined driving member consists of two parts. First, a hollow sleeve is mounted vertically in a drive case on the mill frame. The sleeve is supported within the frame through top and bottom antifriction bearings. It has internal splines at the lower end of its bore and an internal shoulder above the spline end. Second, a vertical shaft with an external spline and collar is inserted into the sleeve. The vertical shaft engages the internal spline of the sleeve and is supported by its collar which rests on the internal shoulder in the sleeve. Thus, the top frame, rather than the mill roll bearing, supports the weight of the spindle, joints and pod coupling.

Abstract: In a method of rolling tubes in a stretch-reducing rolling mill having a group drive in which the elongation, and therefore the tension is increased by increasing the speed of an auxiliary drive motor relative to that of a main drive motor, the length of the trailing "thickened end", which must be rejected as scrap, is reduced by increasing the elongation from the point in time at which the start of the trailing end portion of the tube reaches the last stand. This trailing end portion is that portion which receives a larger wall thickness than the central portion of the tube as a result of the reduced tension exerted in the trailing end portion of prior art practices. • Patent number: 4124999
Abstract: A support assembly for coupling of a large-sized universal joint of the cardan type as incorporated in a drive assembly for rolling mills. The assembly supports the coupling on a drive spindle portion to prevent the coupling from hanging. A locking rod fixed to the center of the coupling extends through a hole of large diameter formed in the center of the spider of the universal joint, with a sufficient radial clearance provided between the rod and the inner periphery of the spider. The piston rod of a hydraulic cylinder disposed within an inner bore of the drive spindle portion operates to slidingly move a rod receiving member within the bore, thereby bringing a recess portion of the rod receiving member into engagement with or disengagement from the free end of the locking rod. The coupling is securely supported on the drive spindle portion by the engagement of the rod receiving member with the locking rod.

  • Patent number: 4103565
Abstract: A roll drive for a machine of the type used in connection with the manufacture of paper. The roll which is to be driven has an end situated at a plane which is normal to the roll axis, and at the latter plane there is a supporting structure which supports the roll for rotation about its axis. Closely adjacent to this plane is a planetary gear transmission having an output and an input. The latter output is connected by way of a suitable transmission structure to the end of the roll for driving the latter with the output of the planetary gear transmission, while a rotary drive is connected to the input of the planetary gear transmission for driving the roll through the latter transmission and structure connected between the planetary gear transmission and the end of the roll.

  • Patent number: 4083217
Abstract: The invention relates to a train of gears housed within a gear box and designed for driving the lower straightening rolls of a feeding and straightening machine. The gears in the gear box are disposed in staggered relation in adjacent parallel planes and each drive gear is journalled by a drive shaft having a coupling connection to a straightening roll. The staggered arrangement of the drive gears is an important feature since the drive gears have pitch diameters greater than the center to center distance between adjacent straightening rolls. In addition to staggering the drive gears the invention provides idler gears which are interposed between adjacent drive gears, with one idler gear in one plane receiving the drive and the other idler gear in the adjacent parallel plane transmitting the drive.

  • Patent number: 4056957
Abstract: In a rolling mill it is desirable that the torques delivered by the two driven rolls should be the same or at least there should be some predetermined torque differential between them. The torque transmitted by each of the driven rolls is measured and a measure of the difference between the torques is obtained. Said measure is then used to adjust the angular length of that part of the periphery of at least one roll where it is in contact with the workpiece being rolled in the sense to bring about the required torque distribution. The angular length may be adjusted by varying the angle of approach or exit of the workpiece relative to the mill rolls.
