Patent number: 4917370Abstract: A launcher for launching pieces of sheet metal into a roll former is disclosed. The launcher includes laterally spaced conveyor belts having parallel upper reaches which support the piece of sheet metal and transport it to a launch position. While located in the launch position, opposed pushers engage opposite edges of the sheet and move it laterally into a predetermined lateral location in which it is centered and aligned with the roll former. Thereafter, longitudinally spaced gripper rolls engage and grip the opposite sides of the sheet at longitudinally spaced locations. The gripper rolls operate to feed the sheet and maintain gripping thereof until substantially the entire sheet enters the roll former. Therefore, proper alignment is maintained and uniform roll forming is produced. The pushers along one side of the sheet move to a fixed position to precisely locate the adjacent edge of the sheet.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1987Date of Patent: April 17, 1990Assignee: White Consolidated Industries, Inc.Inventor: Graham W. Patent number: 4796450Abstract: A system for processing steel strips in a hot strip mill includes an apparatus and method for removing the oxide layer in the finishing mill process such that the final thickness of the oxide layer is much less than previously possible. In order to reduce the thickness of the oxide layer, the invention provides for the removal of oxide scales from the surface of the steel strips at a distance in front of the working rolls of the finishing mill that minimizes the time the strip is exposed to ambient conditions after it is descaled and before it is received between the pair of working rolls. By minimizing this exposure time, the thickness of the oxide layers in the finished strips is substantially reduced.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1986Date of Patent: January 10, 1989Inventor: David T. Patent number: 4106547Abstract: A continuous casting installation has a curved roller apron and a withdrawal and straightening unit. The latter has upper and lower rollers, and the upper rollers are vertically movable so that a gap may be formed between the same and a strand which extends into the withdrawal and straightening unit. A heating device is provided for the strand and may be moved from a position laterally of the withdrawal and straightening unit into the gap between the upper rollers and the strand when the upper rollers are raised. The heating device is preferably arranged in the region of the tangent point. When a strand cools to such an extent that the withdrawal and straightening unit can no longer bend it, as may occur in the event of a breakout, the upper rollers beyond the tangent point are raised. The strand is then driven forward until, by virtue of its curvature, it touches the raised upper rollers.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 1977Date of Patent: August 15, 1978Assignee: Concast AGInventor: Friedrich Fluckiger

Patent number: 4084421Abstract: Apparatus for twisting and guiding metal stock into roll grooves, comprises a guide mounted in front of such a groove. The guide has a through path from which the stock emerges from the guide and passes to the groove, and a feed path disposed to one side of the through path. The feed path is defined by a funnel-shaped member having an opening therethrough of about the same size and shape as the stock to be fed, and which is mounted for swinging movement between two positions, in one of which it is out of line with the through path and in the other of which it is in line with the through path. The stock is fed through the swinging member in the out-of-line position and contacts a cam surface which moves the stock and hence the swinging member, into line with the through path, thereby twisting the stock about 90.degree.. After the stock is passed, the swinging member returns by gravity to its out-of-line position.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1976Date of Patent: April 18, 1978Assignee: Morgardshammar AktiebolagInventor: Walter Johann Karlberger
