  • Patent number: 6449997
Abstract: In an improved process for drawing metal wires and a tool for actuating the process, a metal wire is coated with a thin surface layer of lubricant and subsequently drawn, gradually in a series of single drawing operations. In a final of the drawing operations, the wire is forced to pass through a hole which exhibits an angle of convergence comprised between 30 degrees and about 85 degrees. As the wire passes through the hole, the layer of lubricant is removed and the drawn wire exiting from the hole is clean and lubricant-free.

  • Patent number: 6430980
Abstract: Coating and shaping of strand-shaped metallic material by drawing using lubricants in solid to liquid state is disclosed. The disclosed method and arrangement enables high-performance shaping while decisively reducing expenditure on apparatus. At the same time, sealing problems with respect to lubricant are eliminated and several technical parameters in the shaping and coating process are improved depending on the material to be shaped. The shaping stock is coated with lubricant by a double chamber arrangement comprising a low-pressure lubricant chamber followed by a high-pressure lubricant chamber and is shaped by means of working drawing dies at the outputs of the chambers. The low-pressure chamber is filled with solid to pasty lubricant by a lubricant feed and a low pressure is applied to this lubricant externally.

  • Patent number: 6205645
Abstract: The combination of one or more high reduction drafts with controlled, low back tensions increases the range of deformation conditions over which dimensional tolerances and Je may be optimized. The method comprises the steps of: first, providing a precursor article comprising a metal matrix surrounding a plurality of filaments extending along the length of the article and comprising precursors to a desired superconducting ceramic; next, roll working the precursor article during a breakdown stage at a back tension less than the elastic to plastic transition threshold of the composite during at least one high reduction roll working draft, and, then, sintering the rolled article to obtain the desired superconducting ceramic. In a preferred embodiment, the rolling step further comprises rolling the article at a front tension less than the elastic to plastic transition threshold of the rolled, unsintered article.

  • Patent number: 6026672
Abstract: The inventive pressure die holder is comprised of an elongate hollow steel cylinder which receives a series of dies in an interior cavity. The dies are maintained within the cavity by means of a cap which is attached to one end of the pressure die holder. The inventive pressure die holder is provided with two sets of vents which relieve lubricant pressure within the pressure die holder. The first set of vents are located in mid portion of the body of the pressure die holder in alignment with the dies. The first set of vents reduce pressure between the die pair, allowing the lubricant to flow through the die at a cooler temperature. The second set of vents are located in the body of the pressure die holder adjacent the cap, and allow the cap to be removed from the pressure die holder at the end of the drawing operation.

  • Patent number: 5511440
Abstract: A hollow steering shaft having a good quality can be manufactured at a low cost by passing a blank tube having a circular cross section through a preliminary shaping die and then through a finishing shaping die. The blank tube which has passed through the preliminary shaping die is formed with two kinds of convex curve surface portions having different radii of curvature and arranged continuously, circumferentially and alternately. When the blank tube passes through the finishing shaping die, the larger convex curve surface portions are deformed into flat portions. As a result, a steering shaft having an elliptical cross section is manufactured.

  • Patent number: 5402664
Abstract: A wire drawing die assembly has removable pressure and draw nibs held in screw-together holders. The pressure nib projects somewhat from its holder and presses the draw nib into a converging passageway in the draw nib holder. A lubricant pressure chamber is formed between the nibs for lubricant which is introduced through the front end of the pressure nib. When the draw nib becomes worn, the holders can be separated and the worn nib can be readily replaced.

  • Patent number: 5247822
Abstract: Containers of explosive liquids can be prevented from exploding by filling the containers with meshes made from metal foil which occupies a negligible fraction of the volume of the container although it must completely fill the container. In order to refill the containers, the rib mesh (1) must consist of sufficiently small, spherical bodies (24). The invention also deals with the production of these filling bodies (24) from aluminum strip expanded into a mesh. The aluminum strip is first passed through a calibration opening (4) which compacts it into a bar (2) of circular cross-section which is then compacted perpendicularly to its length and continuously transported in the longitudinal direction as it is being squeezed. The front piece of the bar is then detached and pressed in a mould with a hemispherical bottom (21) by a die with the same inner contour to form a spherical filling body.

  • Patent number: 4662203
Abstract: The multistage tandem wire drawing apparatus according to the present invention has a heating mechanism and wire drawing units (draw benches) arranged in tandem to correspond to the respective manufacturing stages of the work, and is characterized in that a tension of the work moving between the wire drawing units is measured. The measured tension and a predetermined reference tension are compared to calculate any deviation therebetween, and, by using a movable chuck speed of a predetermined wire drawing unit as a reference, movable chuck speeds of the other wire drawing units are controlled in accordance with the calculated tension deviation. According to the present invention, the wire drawing speeds of the wire drawing units are controlled in accordance with the tension of the work between the wire drawing units so that excessive tension does not act on the work, thereby preventing damage to the work while keeping the work taut.
