  • Patent number: 6266858
Abstract: The end faces of the edge portions of a flat plate, which have been respectively cut into a given shape according to a trimming operation, are then respectively face-struck into a linear shape. Also, in the trimming operation, each of the edge portions of the flat plate is cut into a shape having a larger dimension than that of a finally required shape thereof, and the thus produced excess length portions of the edge portions are worked by compressing when a pair of semidivided cylindrical portions are butted against each other. Since a connecting portion situated between the pair of semidivided cylindrical portions is always pressed with a given pressure, the working properties of the connecting portion in the molding operation are prevented from being revived.

  • Patent number: 5400634
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a length of tubing into a curved, unbalanced and non-uniform shape continuously bends the tubing and then changes the cross-sectional shape along the length of the tubing to eliminate springback and provide a stable part with shape retention. The apparatus includes relatively movable upper and lower half die shoes. A form post, a forming steel subassembly, a plurality of slides and driver posts are positioned on the shoes in Juxtaposed relationship. A clamp holds a length of tubing against the form post. Movement of the die shoes towards each other shifts the slides to continuously bend the tube about the form post. After the bending operation, the cross-sectional shape of the tubing is changed from a generally circular shape towards an oval or generally rectangular shape. A pressure is applied to induce stresses which eliminate springback and provide a stable part.

  • Patent number: 4677839
Abstract: A spiral-wound metal catalyst support is disclosed, wherein the layers of the spiral cannot telescope outwardly in either direction. The support is formed by first winding together a flat strip and a corrugated strip, the strips being wound on a mandrel. The mandrel is removed to leave an axial hole. The catalyst support is then flattened at each end, so as to close the axial hole at each end. The flattening is done in mutually perpendicular directions, so that the catalyst support has tapers in both of two directions. The tapers prevent telescoping of the layers of the support. The catalyst support can be placed in a tube before it is flattened, and then the tube and the support can be flattened together, so that the support becomes firmly anchored in the tube. In an alternative embodiment, a second, tapered mandrel is inserted into the support before flattening, the tapered mandrel having a shape conforming to the inner cavity defined by the flattened support.

  • Patent number: 3999576
Abstract: A tubular sleeve for use in a headlight assembly and the like and the method of manufacturing it. A strip blank is punched out of metal sheets or coiled strips. The blank has a straight edge along the lengths thereof and an arcuate edge opposite to the straight edge symmetrical relative to a plane passing through the center of the strip blank transversely thereof. The blank has opposite ends having straight edges substantially parallel to the plane. The strip is bent or rolled into a tubular split-sleeve configuration and then a marginal edge portion along the arcuate edge is flared outwardly with a varying taper. The flare is then further bent to form a flange normal to the sides of the body of the split-sleeve. A ring is formed on the flange extending generally toward the straight edge by offsetting a marginal edge portion of the flange. The edges of the split-sleeve along the split are joined to form a closed tubular sleeve.
