Including Link-actuated Tool Support Patents (Class 72/450)
  • Patent number: 4934173
Abstract: Stamping and forming machine of the type having opposed tooling assemblies which are reciprocable towards and away from each other has toggle mechanisms for moving the tooling assemblies along their paths of reciprocation. Each toggle mechanism has one toggle link pivoted to a tooling assembly and another toggle link pivoted at a fixed pivot location. The fixed location pivots are adjustable in order to control the position of the tooling assemblies when they are in their closed positions. Additionally, adjustable wear plates are provided in the passageway in which the tooling assemblies are mounted. Advantages achieved include reduced manufacturing cost for the machine, potential for high operating speeds, and compactness when desired.

  • Patent number: 4926671
Abstract: A brake press including a stationary bar, a translating bar, a disk rotatable about a fixed, stationary axis, a first set of linkage interconnecting one longitudinal end of the translating bar with the disk, and a second set of linkage interconnecting the other longitudinal end of the translating bar with the disk. The rotation of the disk in a first direction acts through both sets of linkage to translate the translating bar toward the stationary bar, and the rotation of the disk in a second direction acts through both sets of linkage to translate the translating bar away from the stationary bar. The disk may be selectively rotated in either direction or maintained in a stationary position by one or more hydraulic rams. The flow of hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic rams is controlled by a foot pedal which is biased in a position which will cause the hydraulic rams to rotate the disk so that the translating bar is moved away from the stationary bar.

It employs a bar which is pivotally mounted on a support member with the bar having a hold down surface thereon so positioned that when the bar is pivoted in a selected direction the hold down surface will engage the element in clamping relation and further pivoting of the bar in the same direction will result in the shifting of the pivot point for the bar from the pivot member to the hold down surface. The pivot member is spring loaded for lifting movement at this time with an associated spring pack providing for a controlled loading by the hold down surface against the element. A movable cam member having a wedge shaped lower end moves between a cam follower carried by the arm and a fixed cam follower to effect the controlled pivoting of the bar.

  • Patent number: 4329865
Abstract: A material engaging apparatus, such as a press brake or shear, has first and second jaw members pivotally mounted together and with coordinating material engaging and working members in the jaw members. An extensible ram positioned along and between the rear sides of the jaw members has one end pivotally mounted to the second jaw member and another end pivotally mounted to a rear end of a lever arm extending from front to rear and spaced adjacent the first jaw member. A front end of the lever arm is pivotally mounted to a front end of the first jaw member. A connecting link extending between the first and second jaw members has a first end pivotally mounted to the lever between the front and rear ends thereof and a second end pivotally mounted to the second jaw member. The connecting link acts as a movable fulcrum for the lever arm and is movable therewith to provide substantially constant leverage as the lever arm moves to urge the first and second jaw members together.

Abstract: A folding machine has a pair of longitudinally extending forming members which in a rest position have horizontal co-planar upper surfaces 22 and 23. In use as a folding machine a holding tool (not shown) is supported on a holding bar 33 to hold a workpiece which is folded by swinging the forming members 15 and 16 upwardly and outwardly as shown. The folding machine is modified in accordance with the invention by the provision of a vertically guided horizontal platten 41 connected to the forming members by pivoted links 42 and 43 to enable the apparatus to operate a punch and die set 48. A fixed abutment 51 on the holding bar 33 operates the punch as the platten is raised.

  • Patent number: 4318295
Abstract: A power metal-forming press of the underdrive type having a pair of laterally spaced rocker shafts journaled in the base. A set of vertical pull rods are connected to arms at the ends of the shafts for reciprocating the press slide. Driving subassemblies are provided at the near side and far side of the press each including a main drive gear carrying an eccentric. A pitman pivotally engaging the eccentric has a short arm which is coupled via a connecting link to a rocker arm on one of the shafts. The pitman also has a long arm extending generally in the opposite direction, the end of the long arm being guided with respect to the frame along a generally longitudinal path. The long arm is so angled with respect to the connecting link under conditions of bottoming of the slide that upon rotation of the main drive gear the short arm traces a generally elliptical path having a major axis which bears an acute angle to the bottoming orientation of the connecting link.

  • Patent number: 4307599
Abstract: A spacing adjustment and overload releasing mechanism in a stamping press having a base and a crown spaced from one another and a ram operating therebetween, in which posts interconnect the base and crown and the spacing between the ram and base is adjustable by a nut and collar disposed on opposite sides of the crown, and a fluid operated means such as a hydraulic cylinder for each of the posts disposed in the base applies pressure urging the crown and base toward one another at substantially equal pressures, greater than the normal pressure applied by the ram, but at a pressure sufficiently low that it is within the load capacity of the press frame. The nut and collar provide the initial adjustment between tool sections operated by the ram and base while the fluid operated means provides an overload release in the event excessive pressure is applied by the ram.

Abstract: A press structure wherein the usual crank mechanism is utilized solely for the movement of the press tooling and forging pressure is exerted by way of load cylinders interconnecting the press ram and load beam so that the press ram and load beam are drawn together under the influence of high pressure hydraulic fluid within the load cylinders. A minimum volume of high pressure hydraulic fluid is required to exert the forging pressure and, accordingly, the work efficiency of the press is much greater than that experienced with other press systems.

  • Patent number: 4206628
Abstract: A forging press having a mechanical mechanism for reciprocating the ram and wherein the tooling includes a fixed die sleeve, a punch carried by the ram, and a pad movable through the die sleeve in conjunction with a slug being formed. The pad is supported by a forge cylinder which is coupled to the ram by one or more load cylinders. The area of the piston of the forge cylinder is greater than the combined areas of the pistons of the load cylinders so that as the pad descends hydraulic fluid is pumped from the forge cylinder through the load cylinders at a rate greater than that which can be received so that the hydraulic fluid is compressed to a high pressure, and this pressure is effective as a forging pressure between the punch and the pad. The hydraulic system may include an accumulator for receiving excess hydraulic fluid after a preset pressure has been reached in the system. Various hydraulic systems are possible.

  • Patent number: 4198846
Abstract: A stamping press in which a frame supports a ram for reciprocating movement thereof and one or more wobble plates mounted on a main shaft operate a pivoted yoke for reciprocating the ram, and a die section mounted thereon. The ram is normally operated through two complete reciprocating movements for each revolution of the main shaft, and a counter-weight operated by the yoke is preferably included in the press structure for balancing the movement of the ram. The wobble plates may have a means for adjusting the angularity to vary the length of the ram stroke, and the crown of the press is preferably hydraulically separated with respect to the base to provide a safety overload feature and easy access to the work pieces or tooling. In a modification, cams operated by the yoke may be used to drive the ram from the yoke as it is operated by the wobble plate to provide one complete reciprocating movement for each revolution of the main shaft.
