Abstract: In a method and a device for producing a circumferentially closed hollow profile, a hollow-profile blank is expanded by fluidic internal high pressure in an internal high-pressure forming tool, after which the hollow-profile blank assumes the final shape of the hollow profile. In order to make it possible in a simple manner to have a production of a hollow profile in which process reliability is ensured to a sufficient extent even in the case of high expansions of the hollow profile (higher than or equal to the breaking elongation of the material), during expansion, the hollow-profile blank is supported, on at least one partial circumferential region, by at least one diaphragm fastened to the inside, facing the blank, of the tool and capable of being acted upon by a controllable pressure acting from outside, the diaphragm shifting back elastically as expansion progresses, with the supporting pressure acting on the diaphragm being reduced at the same time.

  • Patent number: 6178796
Abstract: A device and a method for shaping a flat article under high pressure, in which a one-sided forming tool is used together with a high pressure press equipped with a membrane. The one-sided forming tool comprises at least one first trimming device, a second trimming device provided with a punch, and with at least two clamps arranged to hold a blank in position over said one-sided forming tool. The clamps are arranged moveable in respect to each other such that the blank is stretchable and pressure is applicable by said membrane so shaping the blank against said one-sided forming tool within a single and continuous press operation. The one-sided forming tool also comprises a piercing device. The advantage of the invention is that an article may be stretched, trimmed, shaped and pierced in one continuous forming cycle, which article may also be formed from a blank that has been pre-painted on at least one side.

  • Patent number: 5927120
Abstract: A hydroforming apparatus capable of deforming relatively large and thick-walled workpieces, yet which is relatively small, simple, and inexpensive in construction and operation, includes a pressure vessel that is disposed within a frame. The pressure vessel includes upper and lower vessel members that support respective die sections therein. When the upper and lower vessel members are moved adjacent to one another, the die sections cooperate to define a die cavity in which a workpiece to be hydroformed is disposed. An inflatable bladder is disposed between one or both of the die sections and the associated upper and lower vessel members. During the hydroforming operation, pressurized fluid is introduced within the workpiece so as to expand it outwardly into conformance with the die cavity defined by the die sections. At the same time, pressurized fluid is introduced into the inflatable bladder, causing it to expand between the die sections and the associated upper and lower vessel members.
