  • Patent number: 8904616
Abstract: A method of monitoring a crimping process is disclosed, which determines whether an actual force stroke progression (Fa)/force-time progression is, a) above, or, b) below an ideal force stroke progression (Fi)/force-time progression in at least one point. The method shifts an upper border (Bu) and/or the lower border (Bl) of a tolerance band upwards in case a) and downwards in case b), utilizing four zones (Z1-Z4) of determined force progression. Additionally, there are is an absolute upper limit (Lu), at which an upward shifting of the upper border (Bu) is inhibited, and an absolute lower limit (Ll), at which a downward shifting of the lower border (Bl) is inhibited. Moreover, a crimping press and a computer program product embodying the method are disclosed.

A wire core portion (25) is crimped to the electrical terminal (4) between the crimper (2) and the anvil (5). Then, the auxiliary punch (8) strikes out a crimped portion (21) to form a concave portion (27) in the state that the crimped portion (21) is compressed by the crimper (2) and the anvil (5).

Abstract: A crimping tool is provided for attaching a connector to a shielded coaxial cable. One connector on which the tool can be employed is an improved BNC type connector including a sliding center pin which is movable into the interior of the connector, such connector also including a crimpable ferrule for holding the cable to the connector. The crimping tool includes a pair of opposed crimping dies for crimping the ferrule to hold the connector to the cable. A lower crimping die of the tool includes a fitted receptacle for receiving the connector. A pair of handles are coupled to the opposed crimping dies to drive the dies together to crimp the ferrule. The crimping tool further includes a driving member for pushing the center pin of the connector into the interior of the connector simultaneously with the closure of the crimping dies to crimp the ferrule onto the shielded cable.

  • Patent number: 5799391
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an apparatus and method for a unique crimping applicator which significantly advances a carrier strip (1.3 inches) to allow for the crimping of widely spaced terminals and a large variety of terminal sizes and configurations. The dual cam system includes a ram and a cam lever external to the ram which simultaneously move downward thereby activating the crimping process and simultaneously loading a compression spring assembly. In a preferred embodiment, an air feed is interchangeable with the spring assembly. Three disks allow more accurate adjustments for the crimp height, thus allowing a larger range of wire gauges than prior art devices. Allowing a wide variety of wire gauges enables the crimping of two or more wires into the same terminal using a single device. In a preferred embodiment, three disks allow the crimping applicator to accept approximately four different wire gauges or two ranges of wire gauges.

Abstract: An apparatus (40) is disclosed for crimping a terminal (12) onto a wire (10) thereby forming a crimped wire assembly (32). The apparatus includes an upper die form tool (78) and a mating lower deep crimping nest (74) for performing the crimping operation. A terminal feed unit (86) is provided for feeding a strip (24) of terminals along a feed path (180) and positioning each terminal, in turn, in crimping position between the mating tooling. A lifting arm (134) is provided for separating the crimped wire assembly (32) from the deep crimping nest (74). The arm is pivotally attached to the apparatus and includes a first end having a camming surface (160, 162) arranged to engage the crimped wire assembly, and upon pivoting of the arm, the camming surface cams the crimped wire assembly (32) out of the deep crimping nest (74) in a direction (178) substantially perpendicular to the feed path (180) and then moves the wire assembly (32) in a direction along the feed path.

Abstract: An apparatus (10) is disclosed for holding and actuating a terminal applicator (20) in the attachment of terminals (28) to the ends of electrical wires. The apparatus includes a frame (12) that supports a conventional terminal applicator (20) and a crankshaft (58) journaled in the frame. A crank arm (44, 44') has its lower end (96, 96') eccentrically coupled to the crankshaft and its upper end (104, 104') coupled to the ram (34) of the terminal applicator. Abstract: Crimping tooling is disclosed for providing a precision crimped termination (182, 186). The tooling includes a crimping die (92) and mating crimping anvil (136) that will operate in a hand operated tool (50), a power assist hand tool, an applicator in a press, or other machine. The crimping die (92) and crimping anvil (136) each have two spaced barrel engaging portions (116, 118, 164, 166) that form four radially arranged precision indents in the barrel of a plated contact terminal (66) for terminating the contact terminal to an electrical conductor (68). Each of the four barrel engaging portions (116, 118, 164, 166) has an arcuate convex shape without any flat surfaces or sharp corners or edges that could interfere with smooth deformation of the barrel without over stressing the plating during crimping. The end (156) of the anvil terminates at each side wall (158, 160) in somewhat sharp edges (168, 170), respectively, that curve outwardly to help prevent the formation of a burr on the crimped connection.

  • Patent number: 5651178
Abstract: An IDC termination machine comprises opposed spring loaded gripper pads for clamping and a wire to be terminated in alignment with a corresponding IDC section of a connector. One of the gripper pads is connected to an arm having a camming protrusion that cooperates with a stuffer member. During pulling of the wire between the gripper pads, the gripper pads are biased apart such that the wire can be brought without resistance as close as possible to the connector. Termination is then actuated, and advance movement of the stuffer cams the protrusion into a recess of the camming plate. The gripper pad thus clamps the wire against opposing gripper pad just prior to cutting and termination.
