  • Patent number: 4503693
Abstract: An apparatus for making a hole and a collar in the side of a pipe has a pipe-fastening portion mounted on a stand for holding the pipe and has a hole-making portion for making the hole in the pipe during movement in a first direction. There is also a collaring portion for collaring the edges of the hole during movement in a second direction. The hole-making portion and the collaring portion are mounted on the stand and rotated to produce the desired working action. A variable-speed feeder mounted between the stand and the hole-making and collaring portion effects relative vertical displacement between the stand and pipe-fastening portion and the hole-making and collaring portions. The feeder has a cam element for controlling the rate and extent of the vertical displacement and thereby the movement of the hole-making and collaring portions relative to the pipe.

Abstract: A pipe coupling, which renders it possible to connect branch pipes (24) to a feed-pipe (1) without requiring the flow in the feed-pipe to be shut off. In a cylindrical guide passageway (5) of one of two coupling parts (2a,2b) embracing the feed-pipe a piston (4) is located, which is provided with a passageway (10) for fluid connection between the feed-pipe and the branch pipe. The piston is provided with an internal knife (9) which upon rotation of the piston cuts up material out of the feed pipe to form the opening to the passageway and projects the cut-up material into the guide passageway (5) to assist in anchoring the coupling in place.

  • Patent number: 4428214
Abstract: A flow drilling tool including a blunt-ended prepunch portion for punching a circular slug from the workpiece as the tool is rotated and moved axially with respect to the workpiece. Thereafter, a circular forming portion is rotated in contact with the workpiece to increase the length and diameter of the punched hole. The prepunch permits formation of a rimmed hole in a single step by eliminating predrilling. Variations and irregularities in the length and thickness of the rim portion surrounding the hole are reduced, and ragged tapered surfaces on the rim portion are eliminated. The axial location of the hole relative to the workpiece is controlled by adjusting the speed of rotation of the tool and the axial pressure of the tool against the workpiece, and by preheating the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4361021
Abstract: A method and tooling for making angle ring flanges from relatively light gauge sheet metal. The method starts with a flat strip of sheet metal from which two angle ring flanges are formed. The strip is rolled and butt welded into a band, the butt weld is broached on both surfaces at the weld line to the thickness of the sheet metal band. The band is placed in a roll forming machine between a set of two forming rolls which rotate and merge to rotate the band and form it into a ring of channel section with outward facing channel legs at 90.degree. to the channel base. One roll is male and pushes the center half of the band down into the female roll and the outer quarters of the band are forced into the clearance between the male and female forming rolls to form the standing legs or flanges of the finished channel section. The male roll has an annular central groove and the female roll includes a shearing cutter disc which is complementary to the annular groove.

  • Patent number: 4302958
Abstract: The invention relates to methods and apparatus for making rings from tube stock (10) by a part-off rolling tool (12,15) which is advanced radially into the tube stock to form successive rings, e.g. annular blanks for subsequent roll forming into bearing rings. The tube stock is indexed forward after separation of each ring. Errors in the length of tube stock indexed forward each time are contained by forming a locating groove (47) on the tube stock by means of a groove-rolling tool (40) set at an appropriate axial distance from the part-off rolling tool (12) and moved radially with it. In the next cycle the groove (47) automatically centers the part-off tool as the latter begins its advance into the tube stock, so as to give the correct axial length of the finished ring. The part-off tool is stopped before fully penetrating the tube wall, which is then machined. Final separation takes place during this machining or in a subsequent finishing pass by the part-off tool.

  • Patent number: 4132097
Abstract: A method for forming collared holes in a workpiece. The tool has a drill formed at one end thereof for forming a hole in the workpiece. Immediately adjacent and contiguous to the drill is a tapered configured portion which is extendable into the hole formed by the drill. Rotation of the tool causes a collar to form around the hole as the tapered portion of the tool is rotated and forced into the hole. The tool has a constant diametered rod configured portion to straighten and polish the inside surface of the collar formed around the hole in the workpiece. The method of forming the collared hole in a workpiece includes the steps of forming the hole in the workpiece, inserting the tapered tool into the hole so as to contact the tapered tool against the circumference of the hole. The tool is then rotated and the tapered portion is forced further through the hole so as to form the collar integral with the workpiece and surrounding the hole while protruding from opposite sides of the workpiece.

Abstract: This method is particularly suited for practice on a multiple spindle screw machine in which each work spindle carries a length of bar stock. The work end of each bar is formed, sized and drilled in a conventional manner to form thereon a wheel shaped workpiece which is then rotated between two thread dies to form diagonal grooves in its periphery.
