The method permits a simple reduction of the surface roughness without creating finishing residues that could result in obstructions of the holes.

The invention method includes these steps: A die is fashioned having an outside surface corresponding to the inside surface of the desired part. A plastically deformable sheet of material is clamped to the die so that the material is tangent to the die at a tangent area. A forming path is defined that follows the part's outside surface definition beginning at a point adjacent to the tangent area and tracing around the tangent area in circuits that incrementally offset away from the tangent area until all of the outside surface of the part is traced. A forming tool is then moved along the forming path as the die and the sheet of material remain stationary so that the end of the forming tool presses the sheet material against the die thereby gradually forming the sheet material against the die to produce a finished formed part.

    Abstract: An expanding mandrel (10) used mainly for expanding heat exchanging tubes (21) of a cross fin coil (20) of an air conditioning machine, so as to connect them to fins of the cross fin coil. The expanding mandrel has flexibilty, comprising a plurality of mandrel pieces (11) which are bandably connected in a row, with an expanding head (13) disposed at the leading end. By an expanding method and an expanding apparatus both using the mandrel (10), the mandrel (10) is wound on the winding drum (41); is fed from the winding drum (41) so as to be inserted into the heat exchanging tube (21) of the cross fin coil so as to be expanded at the time of tube expansion; and is retracted from the heat exchanging tube (21), after completion of the expanding, so as to be wound on the winding drum (41). This provides a decreased size of the apparatus and allows even an expansion of a heat exchanging tube which has been bend-processed.

The entry end of the mandrel assembly is conically tapered to define a range of radial motion for the rollers upon linear movement of the mandrel assembly.
