Communications Interface Patents (Class 725/117)
  • Patent number: 7263713
Abstract: In a television signal transmission system, CS broadcasting signals received via a master antenna are converted into intermediate frequency signals in an LNB (Low Noise Block Down Converter). The CS intermediate frequency signals then undergo conversion of the modulation format, for example, from QPSK into 64-QAM, so that CS broadcasting signals from each transponder, having a bandwidth of, for example, 27 MHz, are accommodated in a narrower bandwidth, for example, 6 MHz, which is equivalent to one channel of terrestrial broadcasting services. Then, the signals accommodated in the narrower bandwidth is frequency-shifted into a vacant frequency band in the VHF band or the UHF band. Accordingly, the CS signals accommodated in the narrower band and frequency-shifted into the vacant band are multiplexed with terrestrial broadcasting signals in the VHF and UHF bands and BS intermediate frequency signals so that all these signals are delivered to each household via a single cable.

Abstract: Systems and methods for distributing applications across a server and one or more nodes in a network. When a node is turned on or booted, a node application is requested from the server and loaded on the node. The node application provides a user interface through which other feature applications are selected and run on the node. The node application loads/unloads selected applications and manages node resources for those applications. Each application is developed with a process portion that runs on the server and a user interface portion that is loaded on the node. The node application also provides support to the user interface portion of each application such that the applications may construct user interfaces using the available standards provided by the node application.

  • Patent number: 7155734
Abstract: A broadband data broadcast system that allows rich multimedia content to be delivered to a plurality of subscribers is disclosed. The broadband data broadcast system operates by multiplexing a plurality of rich multimedia digital information streams together at a centralized data broadcast center. The data broadcast center then broadcasts the multiplexed digital information stream on a broadcast medium such as satellite broadcasts, radio frequency broadcasts, or digital television broadcasts. A large number of receiver systems receive the broadcast signal and demodulate the broadcast signal to retrieve the multiplexed digital stream. The receiver system extracts a subset of digital information streams that the particular receiver system's owner has designated are of interest. The receiver system caches the interesting digital information stream for later access. The receiver system outputs the interesting digital information streams to a client system upon demand.

  • Patent number: 6940874
Abstract: Methods for reducing interference from initializing network devices in a data-over-cable system. The method includes aligning Initial Maintenance intervals for multiple upstream channels of the data-over-cable system. A cable modem termination system determines if usage intervals for the upstream channels may accommodate Initial Maintenance intervals that start at a common time. If so, the cable modem termination system constructs Bandwidth Allocation MAP messages for the usage intervals that contain Initial Maintenance intervals timed to start at the common time. In response to the MAP messages, initializing network devices range when there are no scheduled data transmissions on any upstream channel. The method may shorten a cable modem's time for ranging and may decrease collisions with data transmissions on the upstream paths when cable modems try to initialize.

Abstract: This invention enables setting an RF output channel to a desired channel with a simple operation. A number key on a remote controller is depressed for long time of three seconds or more as an operation other than an ordinary operation for the number key. If a control portion detects a setting signal generated by thus depressing the number key for the long time, the control portion determines whether a channel corresponding to the operated number key is vacant. If the channel is vacant, the control portion sets the channel as the RF output channel. If the channel corresponding to the depressed number key is not vacant, a vacant channel is searched. If there is a vacant channel, the vacant channel is set as the RF output channel.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a media library controller that can communicate with multiple physical libraries that are physically separate from each other. The media library controller can maintain a virtualized aggregate media library representing the physical media libraries with which it is in communication. From the physical media libraries, the media library controller can establish a virtual media library and associate a host with the virtual media library. The virtual media library can represent the portions of a physical media library to which the host is allowed access.

Abstract: Provided is a digital broadcast system that receives digital broadcast services on a passive optical network (PON). The data separator separates a signal input thereinto from the outside into an Ethernet frame for data service and an Ethernet frame for digital broadcast service. The Ethernet switch transmits the Ethernet frame for data service to an optical network terminal (ONT) provided in the user's home according to header information of the Ethernet frame for data service. The channel request processor receives the user's channel selection request information and user identification (ID) information from the ONT. The digital broadcast processor transmits the Ethernet frame for digital broadcast service, corresponding to the digital broadcast channel selected by the user, to the user's ONT, by using a part of bandwidth assigned for an existing line.

Abstract: Systems and methods for the exchange of personal streaming media channels are disclosed. An embodiment of the present invention may permit the exchange of media such as, for example, audio and video, in a real time manner via a personal media channel in a media exchange network. The media channel may be established based upon input from a user, and its establishment may be initiated based upon input from sensors such as, for example, a smoke or fire sensor, a motion detector, a swimming pool disturbance detector, and a door bell button. A personal streaming media channel may be a one-way or a two-way channel. The media may be consumed using a set top box, and may be produced by a media peripheral such as, for example, a digital camcorder, a microphone, a video camera, and a MP3 player.

Abstract: A system and method supporting the communication of indication of activity in a communication network are disclosed. An embodiment of the present invention may permit a first user to send an activity indication to a pre-defined group of other users, to enable members of the group of other users to engage in additional media exchange activities with the first user. The activity indication sent to the other users may comprise information descriptive of the media consumption activity of the first user. A user of an embodiment of the present invention may define a set of conditions in which received activity indications result in a notification of the user. Notification of the user may comprise displaying a graphical image, generating a sound, or lighting an indicator on a set top box.
