Abstract: Techniques enable an automatic adjustment of a muted response setting of an automated assistant based on a determination of an expectation by a user to hear an audible response to their query, despite the muted setting. Determination of the expectation may be based on historical, empirical data uploaded from multiple users over time for a given response scenario. For example, the system may determine from the historical data that a certain type of query has been associated with a user both repeating their query and increasing a response volume setting within a given timeframe. Metrics may be generated, stored, and invoked in response to attributes associated with identifiable types of queries and query scenarios. Automated response characteristics meant to reduce inefficiencies may be associated with certain queries that can otherwise collectively burden network bandwidth and processing resources.

  • Patent number: 8371499
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for providing the digital content of non-free event to viewers through interactive display electronic devices. The present invention includes a validator device that has unique Device Access Control address to interact with the entertainment system. Viewer's book ticket though the web interface component providing event details, preferred date/time to watch the event, location to watch event at home or theatre. For home viewing the Device Access Control (DAC) address is also submitted. Viewers receive email of ticket with 6-digit authentication code. At the time of the event the validator device authorizes the authentication code on ticket, validates count of viewers watching the event based on count of tickets purchased and if viewers are in right age to watch the event depending on rating of the event. Then the validator device downloads the digital content of event and streams to viewer's home display device from the theater/auditorium.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method of processing set-top box channel tuning data resulting in channel viewing activity at a second-by-second level which is then correlated with video asset schedule data, program attribute data, and optionally, targeted content delivery data and demographic data, to measure (a) actual television viewing seconds, (b) viewing audience of an advertisement or program during each second that it aired, (c) aggregate viewing audience for each second that an advertisement or program aired, (d) ad seconds viewed controlling for factors such as time of day, product, program, (e) response of various demographic groups to advertisements, and (f) effectiveness of targeted content against non-targeted content as measured in actual viewing seconds; all while maintaining viewer anonymity. The metrics produced are useful to service providers, advertisers, and content producers.

  • Patent number: 8365212
Abstract: A computer-implemented method of analyzing a series of events which may overlap but which can be characterized by various non-uniform starting times and varying durations such as the interactions of human beings with electronic devices that communicate with a computer system accessed through a network. The resulting metrics provide information useful for understanding human behavior; understanding various combinations of who uses the devices, when do they use the devices, and the purpose for which they use the devices; understanding resource consumption, and understanding device usage for the benefit of service providers. One embodiment teaches how to use set-top box channel tuning data to calculate metrics which provide detailed insight into who watches television, when they watch, and what they watch along with metrics needed to manage capacity in a Switched Digital Video system. Another embodiment relates to cell phone/personal communication device usage based on call detail records.

  • Patent number: 8359615
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and a digital broadcasting system for transmitting and receiving an Electronic Service Guide (ESG). When there are ESG fragments to be transmitted through a communication network among ESG fragments included in ESG data, a digital broadcast transmitter generates an ESG data session such that the ESG data session may include route information through the communication network of the relevant ESG fragments. Then, the digital broadcast transmitter transmits the generated ESG data session to a broadcast receiving terminal, which obtains the route information through the communication network of the relevant ESG fragments. Accordingly, a user can more easily and conveniently receive the ESG data by using the route information through the communication network obtained by the broadcast receiving terminal.

  • Patent number: 8000344
Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer program products for sending and receiving frames associated with different VLANs over a secure layer 2 broadcast transport network are disclosed. According to one method, a layer 2 frame is received at a transmit port of a layer 2 forwarding device. The layer 2 frame is to be sent over a secure layer 2 broadcast transport network. A VLAN identifier corresponding to a first VLAN is extracted from the layer 2 frame. The first VLAN identifier is mapped to a second VLAN identifier used by the secure broadcast transport layer 2 network to identify the first VLAN. A portion of the layer 2 frame including the first VLAN identifier is encrypted. The layer 2 frame is transmitted over the secure layer 2 broadcast transport network with the second VLAN identifier in a cleartext portion of the frame.
