Abstract: A method for automatically detecting media and implementing interaction control thereon. The present method receives a media change notification (MCN) from a non-defeatable autorun. After receiving the MCN of a media event an operation is automatically executed. The operation then initiates a controller for controlling interaction of deliverable electronic media from a media file corresponding to the media event, wherein the receiving, executing, and controlling are automatically implemented and cannot be defeated by a user.

Abstract: A device is disclosed that includes an interface component configured to generate a user interface for playing and requesting videos and a reception component configured to receive a subset of videos from a set of videos in accordance with a video streaming session having a preset duration of time and play the subset of videos for the preset duration of time via the user interface. The device further includes a request component configured to request an increase to the preset duration of time of the video streaming session by a segment of time after reception of a video included in the subset of videos, wherein in response to the request, the reception component is configured to receive the subset of videos for an amount of time including the preset duration of time plus the segment of time and play the subset of videos for the amount of time.

The television includes a tuner to receive a broadcast program, an infrared (IR) module to receive an IR signal from a physical remote controller, a controller to change a power-off state into a power-on state based on the received IR signal, a radio frequency (RF) module configured to receive an RF signal from the physical remote controller, and a display module to display a screen remote controller in a predetermined region while displaying the received broadcast program in a screen of the television. The screen remote controller's size is changeable depending on a user's selection. The screen remote controller comprises a first control region comprised of sub-regions used to change at least one channel of the television and a second control region comprised of at least one sub-region used to link to the Internet.

The VDS provides program guide information to create a program guide that includes program guide entries for subscribed channels and non-subscribed channels. The client terminal includes a video distribution system interface to receive the program guide information, a display interface to display the program guide on the display device, a user interface to receive user input, and a terminal controller responsive to a subscription control program. In response to user input, the terminal controller selects a program guide entry. If the selected program guide entry is for a non-subscribed channel, the user is queried as to whether the user would like to subscribe to the selected channel. In response to user input indicating that the user would like to subscribe to the selected channel, a subscription request for the selected channel is transmitted to the VDS.

At least one marker is located in the broadcast media item that identifies a first advertisement in the broadcast media item. One of a plurality of second advertisements is selected that targets the user to replace the first advertisement. The first advertisement is replaced with the selected one of the second advertisements in the broadcast media item.

Abstract: A method for controlling an image display apparatus includes determining a type of a video signal included in an input signal, determining whether three-dimensional (3D) format information is included in the input signal, if the video signal is a 3D video signal, requesting 3D format information about the video signal to a server that stores 3D format information, if the input signal does not include the 3D format information about the video signal, and processing, upon receipt of 3D format information from the server in response to the 3D format information request, the video signal according to the 3D format information and displaying a 3D image based on the processed video signal.

The video advertisement embedding the purchase code may be displayed to consumers on televisions or on display kiosks installed at a merchant's storefront. A consumer, who is viewing the video advertisement and is interested in purchasing the product being advertised, may point a mobile device with a camera, e.g., a smart phone, to scan the video advertisement with the camera. The mobile device may decode the video advertisement to capture the purchase code embedded in the video advertisement. The purchase code may automatically direct the mobile device to visit the product web page at the merchant's web site. Thus, the consumer may purchase the product immediately at the merchant's web site.

Abstract: A system, an authentication engine and a method are described herein for authenticating an end user and associating their set-top box with a third party web based application to stream a third party video to the set-top box. In one example, the end user may utilize a client device (e.g., computer, laptop computer, smart phone) to access via the internet the third party video provider which lists a number of videos that the end user could watch on their television. The end user would select one of the videos to watch and then their cable provider would stream the video to the end-user's set-top box to be displayed on their television. To enable this service, the authentication system authenticates the end user and associates their set-top box with the third party video provider's web based application.

The request indicates a selection to purchase video content for a second subscriber associated with a second set-top box device. Further, the method includes receiving viewing preferences data at the video content gifting server from the second set-top box device. The viewing preferences data indicates a particular time that the second subscriber is to receive the video content. Additionally, the method includes sending video content download data to a particular network entity. The video content download data includes instructions to send the video content to the second set-top box device at the particular time.

Abstract: This invention relates to the prefetching of content items, for example, prefetching of videos, to make the content items accessible from a local data store (118) of the mobile device (112). A processor (114) determines for each of the multiple content items a benefit value associated with an access time. The processor (114) also determines for each of the multiple content items an estimated prefetching cost associated with a prefetching time. Then, the processor (114) selects one of the multiple content items for downloading at the associated prefetching time based on the benefit values and the prefetching cost at the prefetching time. This way, the prefetching can be managed such that the most useful content item which the user will likely access soon are downloaded while at the same time minimising the cost.

The technique further includes controlling an ad data infrastructure mechanism to download the cloud-based ad delivery data file into a local memory, and process the copied ad delivery data file to generate billing data. An ad data infrastructure mechanism receives a configuration file from the ad server, verifies that all items in the configuration file from the ad server were used in the generation of the first billing data, and removes non-verifiable items from the first billing data to generate a final billing data.

In one embodiment of an AMP system, a computer server is communicatively coupled to the Internet and provides a website for enabling uploading of media content, sorting the media content, and downloading the media content. Independent users are permitted to submit, edit, rate, and consume media content over a broadcast media channel or network. In some embodiments of the AMP system, content on the Internet is automatically searched and topics from the searched content are automatically identified. The topics are preferably indicative of currently relevant news or events and are indicative of a type of media content that will be requested for uploading from producers. The AMP system publishes the topics to the producers, receives and stores media content uploaded from the producers that relate to the respective topics, and enable users to select and download the media content.

The multi-unit building may comprise a hotel, motel, office complex, or apartment complex, for example. The storage capacity of the data storage device may be easily expanded by way of adding one or more additional hard disk drives. The data storage device may be conveniently located in a front office or manager's office of the multi-unit building. The system distributes one or more of the stored multimedia data selections to one or more display devices communicatively coupled to the data storage device. Each of the one or more display devices may be located in corresponding units of the multi-unit building. The one or more display devices are used to view the multimedia data selections requested by a tenant or occupant.

Abstract: Techniques disclosed herein include systems and methods for excluding specific application traffic from customer consumption-based data billing counts. This is useful for excluding traffic from consumption totals where the application traffic has been accounted for using other means, such as through billing as a separate or technically distinct service. In practice, a tablet computer (or other end user device) can run a video application that uses a high-speed data network via a cable modem. This video application may be included as part of a core video package associated with a distinct cable television service. The system then provides accurate consumption billing of customer traffic that is outside of any other managed services by creating separate logical data service flows at a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) for excluding specific traffic counts.

In some embodiments, a plurality of data structures is stored in a memory, each data structure representing one of a plurality of advertising slots. The audience management module stores in each of the plurality of data structures a price value associated with a respective advertising slot. A user input of a fixed value is received and stored as the price value of a first data structure of the plurality of data structures. The audience management module automatically updates the price value of each of the plurality of data structures without changing the price value of the first data structure.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing content to users of a network that can be selectively recorded via the user's equipment. In an exemplary embodiment, the network comprises a hybrid fiber coax (HFC) network, and on-demand (OD) sessions are used to provide high-speed download of the requested content to the users. The user's equipment (e.g., set-top box) is equipped with a high-density recording device which can both record the content onto a selected medium (e.g., DVD) and optionally provide copyright protection via one or more means such as limiting the number of copies that can be made, and/or digital watermarking. The network operator can also restrict the establishment of the on-demand sessions and/or release of the content to subscribers based on parameters including prior purchase of the content by the user, and the timing of the release of the same content via other distribution channels such as rental and retail.

Abstract: A user recovers and records multiple programs communicated simultaneously using a communications channel, e.g., QAM communications channel. The simultaneous communication may be by communicating, e.g., an MPEG-2 transport stream including data corresponding to multiple programs through a corresponding to QAM communications channel. Thus a user device, e.g., a set top box, is able to receive and record programs corresponding to multiple simultaneously broadcast programs using a single tuner. This allows a device to receive and record or display more programs at any given time, than the number of QAM tuners and/or receivers in the user device. Novel user interface features which facilitate a user's ability to identify and record multiple programs corresponding to a QAM channel are also described. Methods and apparatus for determining program to communication channel mappings based on user program recordation information are also described.

Content metadata definitions that are associated with the video assets is received. The content metadata definitions including billing data corresponding to an access fee for accessing ones of the video assets. The video assets are encrypted and the encrypted video assets are published. Metadata corresponding to each of the video assets is published. The metadata includes payment delivery data corresponding to the access fee for accessing respective ones of the video assets.

At least one of the databases consists of scheduled media program events. The server sends automatically, without user interaction, to one or more user-designated calendar programs, a calendar event corresponding to a recommended media program event. The calendar event includes a respective date, time and duration.

Abstract: A method and system to permit TV viewers to interact with program content broadcast over a subscriber network, such as cable, satellite, internet, or cellular telephone. The details of the ability for the viewer to interact is embedded as data in the program signal. The subscription provider broadcasts a visual indicator as a small icon during programming that informs the viewer that interaction is permitted. The viewer then uses a remote control to purchase products, vote on events, respond to polls, download files, request information, and request callback actions. The TV viewer uses the remote control to send information to a set-top box front-end application, and to iteratively create transactions that are batched and then sent to a back-end core application and database which then handles fulfillment.
