Under broadcast control, local computers (73, 205), combine user information selectively into prior art communications to exhibit personalized mass media programming at video monitors (202), speakers (263), printers (221), etc. At intermediate transmission stations (e.g., cable television stations), signals in network broadcasts and from local inputs (74, 77, 97, 98) cause control processors (71) and computers (73) to selectively automate connection and operation of receivers (53), recorder/players (76), computers (73), generators (82), strippers (81), etc.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for delivering emergency alert system message content to customer premise devices without requiring them to tune to an emergency message channel and having to encode information into frames of regular program content being delivered to customer premise devices, e.g., set top boxes, are described. An emergency management server receives emergency alert messages from a federal government system and generates emergency alert control messages which are sent to one or more switching devices located at one or more regional hubsites/headends to which the emergency alert message applies. The emergency alert control message instructs the switching device to output an emergency alert content stream in place of a standard program. The switching device outputs the emergency content message stream in place of the standard program content to, e.g., a QAM modulator, which modulates the content stream on the frequency being used to deliver the standard program content being replaced.

Abstract: An iTV user interface includes a navigable menu area through which a user can select from among a variety of services and a content display area in which formatted data associated with a selected menu service are displayed to the user. The formatted data is displayed in a rotating or ticker fashion having both a passive mode, in which the formatted data is displayed in a sequence independent of any selection operations by a television viewer, and active mode, in which the formatted data is displayed in a sequence that depends on selection operations by the television viewer. Advertisements and/or promotions may be interspersed among the content items. The navigable menu area and the content display area may be displayed to the viewer at the same time as television programming is displayed on the television.

Abstract: An interactive television system is provided in which targeted messages may be sent to users. The interactive television system may use an interactive television program guide or other interactive applications to provide interactive television services to users. An e-mail or other messaging application may be used to receive the messages. The messaging application may be separate from the program guide or other interactive television application or may be part of the program guide or other interactive television application. Messages may be targeted based on the television channels to which the user subscribes or based on which settings the user has established in the program guide or other application or based on any other suitable criteria.

Abstract: A system and method for distributing an alert to a set-top box. Media content is received for communication to one or more set-top boxes. Data is extracted from the media content. A determination is made whether the extracted data is associated with one or more alert profiles. The alert is generated in response to the extracted data being associated with the one or more alert profiles. The alert is distributed to one or more set-top boxes in response to generating the one or more alert profiles.

Abstract: A method and system for providing a mobile alert service, and a related device are disclosed. The method for providing a mobile alert service includes: a mobile terminal receives an enhanced Commercial Mobile Alert Service (CMAS) message from a CMAS network; and an alert channel is located based on the enhanced CMAS message, and the alert program content on the alert channel is played. Through adding related information required for playing the alert program of the mobile television into the enhanced CMAS message, the disadvantage that only short text information can be delivered in a conventional CMAS system is overcome, so that the alert program may be watched by the mobile terminal user rapidly, promptly and intuitively.

Abstract: Herein described are at least a system, computer readable storage media, and method for resuming consumption of content which was interrupted by a high priority message. In one embodiment, the method includes receiving the message while tuned to a first communications channel for receiving content, and transmitting a first signal responsive to detecting the start of the message. The first signal may pause delivery of the content, and may determine a location in the content corresponding to the start of the message. The method may further transmit a second signal responsive to detecting an end of the message, and trigger a resumption of delivery of the content starting at the indexed location.

Abstract: A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a communication device having a controller to detect a media device operating externally to the communication device actively engaged in presenting media content, detect an incoming communication session initiated by another communication device, present a notice identifying the media device and the media content being presented by the media device, detect a directive to modify an operation of the media device to mitigate interrupting a communication session with the other communication device, and instruct the media device to modify its operation according to the directive. The second menu includes a device menu including an option to specify a device order in which to send the reminder to a plurality of devices.

Abstract: A method includes receiving video content via an access network of a video distribution network at a set-top box device associated with a subscriber. One or more communication devices are associated with the subscriber. The method includes sending the video content to a display device coupled to the set-top box device. The method includes receiving a notification of a message directed to a particular communication device of the one or more communication devices at the set-top box via the access network. The method includes selecting a message indicator based on configuration settings associated with the subscriber. The method also includes sending the message indicator to the display device to overlay a portion of the video content.

Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed in which an estimated time a user will have to wait before a user selected video begins playing is calculated. The estimated time may be calculated based on, for example, speed of the connection, quality of the video (e.g., HD versus standard definition), length of the video, load on the server at the current time, etc. A game may be selected based at least in part on the calculated estimated wait time and the approximate time to finish the game. In some embodiments, one or more advertisements may be selected based on, for example, the type of video selected by the user (e.g., Sci-Fi, Action, Comedy, etc.), the search term(s) used by the user to search for the video, history of games played (e.g., what games, if any, has the user played previously), etc. The selected game and the one or more advertisements may be served to the user substantially simultaneously.

Abstract: An Emergency Alert System (EAS) alert message is distributed in multiple languages. The multiple language EAS alert message can be provided via a single channel and/or multiple channels. The multiple language EAS alert message can be provided with a language vector indicating the languages provided and the location of respective language specific EAS alert messages. A mobile device receiving the multiple language EAS alert message, selects a preferred language specific EAS alert message and renders the EAS alert message in the preferred language.

Abstract: Various aspects of the present disclosure for wireless communication may intelligently present a concurrent communication session to a user while the user's user equipment (UE) is streaming and/or presenting an original communication session. Example aspects may receive streaming communication content at a mobile device during an active communication session, present the streaming communication content at the mobile device, receive a concurrent service indication at the mobile device during the active communication session, and the concurrent service (or notification thereof) at the mobile device while concurrently streaming the communication content.

The method comprises the steps of receiving a request in an embedded data brokering system to embed the auxiliary data in the media program, determining if the auxiliary data may be embedded into the media program, negotiating a schedule for broadcasting the media program with embedded auxiliary data with the media program provider, transmitting the negotiated schedule for broadcasting the media program with the embedded auxiliary data to the media program provider, steganographically embedding the auxiliary data in the media program while collecting billing information regarding the embedded data, and providing the media program and the embedded auxiliary data to the media program services subscriber for broadcast according to the broadcast schedule.

Abstract: Methods and systems for delaying or dismissing emergency alert system (EAS) messages displayed within multimedia content, wherein user input is provided to temporarily delay for a user selectable or predetermined time period or to permanently dismiss EAS messages. Further user input may determine a snooze period during which the display of EAS messages is temporarily suspended. In some embodiments, EAS messages are automatically delayed until a commercial is displayed. In some embodiments, EAS messages are forwarded from a customer premises equipment device (e.g., a set-top box) to a user specified communication device (e.g., a mobile telephone or remote control device) while the presentation of a multimedia program continues.

By excelling in the personalization of the user's view of broadband content on the Internet and otherwise, the system and method develop “stickiness” with the user that maximizes the benefits and effectiveness of advertising and related activities. The system preferably comprises a network operations center (“NOC”) that receives and packages content, with promotional materials, on virtual channels, a transmission medium that transmits the virtual channels, a broadband ISP with a point-of-presence (“POP”) server that receives the virtual channels and routs virtual channels to a user machine, based on requests received from client software (the “client”) resident on the user machine and filtering performed by the client based on a personal profile of the user.

An access module is communicatively coupled to an access device and configured to receive a request sent by the access device, the request being for access to a media content instance included in the media content. A matching module is configured to match at least one advertising content instance included in the advertising content to the media content instance based on the media content attribute data, user profile data, and content matching data. Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed that allow for providing targeted asset/advertisements for broadcast-wide programming feeds. The systems and methods allow network platforms to select among asset options provided with a content stream and/or replace assets in the content stream. In one arrangement, after selecting an asset, the asset is inserted into the content stream and the content stream is disseminated to subsequent network platforms (e.g., local platforms). At this time, the local platforms may insert local assets into the content stream in predetermined local asset insertion spots.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method can automatically present a plurality of selectable rich media video clips associated with goods and/or services offered for sale via an interactive networked communication system including at least one client and at least one server. A request to the server can be initiated at the client via the interactive networked communication system to select a plurality of rich media video clips from a database of rich media video clips associated with corresponding goods and/or services. A static descriptor can be displayed on the client for each of the plurality of rich media video clips as selected and received from the server. The plurality of rich media video clips can automatically be presented on the client in a concatenated sequence in a continuous rich media video stream.

Abstract: Tools are provided for supporting content syndication to a set top box. The set top box requests a syndicated feed at regularly scheduled times, and receives the syndicated feed through an Internet Protocol (“IP”) network. Hence, a syndicated feed is distributed to the set top box that subscribes to the syndicated feed. Additionally, the set top box converts the syndicated feed for use by the set top box, and causes at least one image based at least in part on the syndicated feed to be displayed on a display device for a user.

Abstract: Enriching video-based content with additional content is enabled by defining metadata for a video comprising a place holder and matching attribute. When the video is viewed, a matching server is utilized to select an object to be inserted in the place holder according to the matching attribute. The matching server selects the object according to video content, represented by matching attribute, according to user related information, and according to type of place holder. The place holder may be utilized to dynamically insert an interactive object to the video. The inserted object may be seamlessly inserted to the video.

Abstract: In-program content targeting is described. A default data stream containing default content associated with multiple segments of a particular program is generated and transmitted. An alternate data stream containing alternate content for one or more of the multiple segments is also generated and transmitted. A client device receiving the default content via the default data stream detects the availability of alternate content via the data stream. Based on profile data associated with the client device (or a user of the client device) and profile data associated with the alternate content, the client device may access the alternate data stream for one or more segments of the particular program.

Abstract: A method for receiving an emergency broadcast message comprises the following steps: after receiving multiplex frames, a terminal determines whether there exists an emergency broadcast message according to a frame header of a multiplex frame corresponding to a control channel, and if so, the terminal parses the multiplex frame which corresponds to the control channel and has a multiplex frame identity of 0, to obtain the emergency broadcast message, and displays the obtained emergency broadcast message to a terminal user; while processing the emergency broadcast message, the terminal parses all the multiplex frames, plays mobile telephone TV programs and displays them to the terminal user. To implement the method, a terminal for receiving an emergency broadcast message and a chip for receiving and processing an emergency broadcast message are also disclosed.

Abstract: Video content that is streamed to portable devices may be interrupted based on an emergency alert system (EAS) broadcast. In one implementation, first video content may be streamed over an Internet Protocol (IP) network to a portable device and an indication of a location of the portable device may be determined. Whether the location of the portable device is in a geographic region covered by an EAS broadcast may also be determined. When the portable device is determined to be in the geographic region covered by the EAS broadcast, a notification may be transmitted to the portable device, where the notification instructs the portable device to interrupt the first video content with video content corresponding to the EAS broadcast. The video content corresponding to the EAS broadcast may be streamed to the portable device.

Abstract: A new television broadcast model called a Broadcast Market Exchange (BMX) eliminates the inefficiency in spectrum usage, providing maximum flexibility in delivering content through either VHF (for fixed location receiving devices) or UHF (optimized for mobile receiving devices) transmission/propagation. In conjunction with the BMX, a wireless communications system architecture is provided to enable a broadcast augmentation channel. The augmentation channel provides supplementation of the Quality of Service (QoS) of a one way User Datagram Protocol (UDP) delivery environment. The augmentation channel may be comprised of one or more physical delivery mechanisms (wired or wireless), but can be effectively unified for increasing QoS and or scalable levels of service (additional essence) to improve the user experience.

Abstract: A mobile wireless system and method are described for distributing emergency alert messages to mobile wireless devices in multiple languages. The emergency alert system receives an alert message including a geographic area identification, and a text alert. The emergency alert system renders one or more translations of the text alert from the text alert. The one or more translated versions of the text alert are provided in particular foreign languages based upon designated foreign languages corresponding to the geographic area identification. The emergency alert system transmits the text alert and one or more translated text alerts commercial mobile wireless service provider networks for broadcasting the text alert and the translated text alert(s) via mobile wireless transmitters having a coverage area falling within a region corresponding to the geographic area identification.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer program products for a message on a display based on a type of video image data for presentation on the display are described. An indication of one of a plurality of priority levels associated with a message for presentation on a display is received. Whether a type of a video image data for presentation on the display has a predetermined relationship to the priority level of the message is determined. The message is presented on the display based on the video image data type determination.

Abstract: Certain aspects of a system and method for inserting an advertisement in a media stream may include a content access server. The content access server may receive the media stream from one or more content providers. The media stream may comprise one or more pre-determined positions for inserting the advertisement. The content access server may insert the advertisement in the media stream at one of the one or more pre-determined positions. The advertisement is selected from one or more advertisements in real-time based on a first metadata associated with the media stream, a location of the one or more pre-determined positions in the media stream, and one or more parameters associated with a user.

Abstract: Embodiments of the disclosed invention include a system and a method for bypassing an emergency alert break-in for a recorded event. For example, in one embodiment, a set top box is disclosed that includes a memory component for storing computer executable instructions; a communication interface for receiving media content data from a cable service provider; a decoder module for decoding the received media content data; an emergency alert break-in monitoring module for identifying an emergency alert break-in from the received data; a digital video recorder controller module for determining whether the identified emergency alert break-in affects a recording of a program on a recorded channel; and an emergency alert break-in bypass module for bypassing the identified emergency alert break-in for enabling the digital video recorder controller module to record the program without the identified emergency alert break-in.

Abstract: A system includes a receiver and a communication interface. The receiver is adapted to tune to an audio/video portion over a transport medium. The communication interface is adapted to receive announcement data associated with the tuned audio/video content directed to a first addressable location and to receive a special announcement directed to the first addressable location. The special announcement indicates availability of the announcement data associated with the tuned audio/video program, and the announcement data is associated with the tuned audio/video content and indicates enhancement data is being transmitted. The controller is adapted to redirect the announcement data to a second addressable location other than the first addressable location in response to the special announcement.

Abstract: Methods and systems for providing a local content to a viewer in the form of an animation sequence. A micro program may be data-cast to a receiver to provide national and local content to a number of receiver units that may be located at, e.g., a cable headend or other distribution point. The micro program executes, at least in part, on each receiver unit. If the micro program is relevant to the receiver unit, then the micro program executes to completion. The micro program may include a code representative of local conditions that is mapped by the local receiver unit to a library of animation graphics used to create an animation sequence to convey the local conditions to a viewer. For example, the local conditions may be weather conditions and the animation sequence conveys how the weather will feel or affect a viewer.

Abstract: Alternate digital content is inserted into mobile devices with a method and apparatus that comprises an alternate content scheduler, an alternate content reporter, and a micro-splicer. The alternate content scheduler further comprises a mobile network interface for interaction with a mobile data and broadcast network, a micro-splicer interface for interfacing with a micro-splicer, a rulebook that is shared with the network which provides the rules for alternate content scheduling, a preference provisioning module comprising an alternate content scheduler library for storing user or network preferences, a scheduler for providing tight synchronization between original program content and alternate content, and a metric recording interface to an alternate content reporter. The micro-splicer works in tandem with the alternate content scheduler to render synchronized display of alternate multimedia content on the mobile device.

The method permits the user to provide survey responses in exchange for viewing a media program with fewer advertisement, and permits the user to manage the survey responses.

Abstract: A first media service is acquired in response to a scheduled acquisition command, where the acquiring operation is performed by a user receiver. The time the acquiring operation takes place depends on information in the command, which indicates when the acquiring operation is supposed to take place and when operation terminates. The receipt of a non-scheduled command by the user receiver causes the acquisition of a second media service, where upon the expiration of the non-scheduled command, the first media service is re-acquired. Upon the expiration of the scheduled command, a third media service is automatically acquired, where the third media service was previously selected by a user.

Abstract: Customizable, multimedia messaging over a subscriber television system utilizing a service independent framework is provided. A multimedia messaging (MMM) server is generally located at a headend of a cable or satellite system, and an MMM client at a communications terminal located remotely with respect to the MMM server. A service provider or operator defines a message configuration to present the message content to subscribers. The message configuration includes parameters that control the presentation of the message content. The MMM server receives an MMM request from a service application, and generates an MMM request which is sent to the communications terminal, particularly, to the MMM client. The MMM client processes the MMM request, including retrieving message content and/or message configuration. The MMM client presents the message to the subscriber. Since the MMM server and MMM client are platform independent, different services may send uniquely generated and designed messages for presentation.
