Receiver Patents (Class 725/68)
  • Patent number: 7861279
Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for increasing a channel change speed in a Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) receiving terminal. The apparatus includes a DMB buffering unit for buffering DMB data, a DMB extractor for extracting only DMB data of a currently set channel, and a controller for setting a changed channel into a DMB signal-receiving unit so that a DMB program can be output using extracted DMB data. DMB data output from the DMB signal-receiving unit is stored in the DMB buffering unit, and DMB data according to a channel set by the user is extracted. Thus, a channel change can be performed without stopping or restarting a DMB receiving operation of the DMB receiving unit, and the time required for the channel change is reduced.

  • Patent number: 7840180
Abstract: A system includes a satellite fleet (102, FIG. 1), in which each satellite receives uplink signals from an uplink hub (104), and transmits downlink signals in at least one directed beam (112). In an embodiment, downlink signals include television content, which is transmitted within a frequency range between about 3.7 and 4.2 Gigahertz. The satellites follow Molniya orbits (1001-1006, FIG. 10), orbit nodes are equally separated, and the satellite phasing is maintained to provide continuous communication within a coverage area. A system also includes user equipment systems (1300, FIG. 13), which include highly-directional, non-tracking antennas (1302) adapted to receive the downlink signals. In an embodiment, a method includes the satellites maintaining orbit phasings, with respect to other satellites, so that the satellite enters an active orbit segment and initiates transmission of downlink signals as a second satellite exits an active orbit segment and ceases transmission of the downlink signals.

  • Patent number: 7822381
Abstract: A system is provided for generating a remapped audio stream at digital audio broadcast radios from a first audio stream using content insertion to allow tiered subscription services. A remapped audio stream is rebranded by extracting segments from the first audio stream relating to channel identification segments and disk jockey talking segments and replacing them with stored audio items (e.g., commercials, different channel identification segments and different disk jockey talking segments). Stored audio items for insertion are broadcast to the radios with messages for controlling the scheduling of insertion at the radios, and the storage and deletion of these audio segments at the radios. Stored audio items and messages can be sent using a different, localized broadcast system from that used to transmit the source audio stream to permit market-specific commercial insertion. Abstract: A TV receiver preliminarily measures and stores, in a memory, data of best receiving directions, each giving maximum signal intensity, of a multi-directional antenna for receivable channels. When the antenna rotationally shifts physically for some reason, one channel is selected and subjected to measurements by an omni-directional scanning again to determine a new best receiving direction. A receiving direction number difference between the stored best receiving direction and the new best receiving direction of the same channel is determined. Using the receiving direction number difference for the one channel, all data stored in the memory are renewed at one time, the data being the best receiving direction numbers and the signal intensities therefor for all the channels. The antenna direction can be quickly adjusted to the rotational shift by new measurements for one channel, without requiring time to make unnecessary measurements for all channels, achieving a best receiving condition steadily.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the demultiplexing of a digital data stream in a receiver so as to retain only those parts of the digital data stream required by the receiver. Such demultiplexing is particularly useful when applied to a receiver circuit in a television system having a digital set-top-box. A memory in the receiver stores packet identifiers of data packets required by the receiver, which are stored in the memory under the control of a first control circuit. A second control circuit extracts packet identifiers from incoming data packets in an input digital data stream. A third control circuit receives the extracted packet identifier and determines whether this matches one of the packet identifiers stored in the memory. A match signal is set by the third control circuit to the second control circuit responsive to a match. The second control circuit demultiplexes the input data packet responsive to the match signal.

Abstract: A multi-directional antenna connected with a digital television broadcast signal receiver is arranged not to move one full turn instantaneously in response to an abrupt drop down in the intensity of a received signal thus to avoid any downward overshooting of the intensity of the received signal and eliminate any useless direction searching time while remains favorably controlled to face in the direction where the intensity of the received signal is at optimum. More specifically, the maximum of the intensity of a received signal at each channel is measured and the threshold is set to a level lower than the maximum. When the intensity of a received signal has dropped down from the threshold, the antenna remains not turned within a predetermined period of marginal time. The antenna is moved one full turn only when the intensity drops down from the threshold and stays continuously over the predetermined period of marginal time.

Abstract: Television system targeted advertising is described. In an embodiment, a content provider monitors a real-time state of television-based systems for a power on/off state and a tuning configuration. The content provider delivers advertising content to one or more of the television-based systems when they are powered-on and configured to receive the advertising content. The one or more television-based systems then receive the advertising content to display a targeted advertisement for viewing. The content provider records how many of the television-based systems receive the advertising content, and records how many of the television-based systems that receive the advertising content then display the targeted advertisement for viewing.

Abstract: A broadcast receiver includes a smart antenna, a tuner which extracts a signal of predetermined channel from among airwaves received by the smart antenna, a signal processing unit which processes the signal extracted by the tuner, and a control unit, in a case the airwave has become unreceivable, to set a pointing direction of the antenna on that occasion as a reference direction, to shift the pointing direction a predetermined magnitude counterclockwise or clockwise, and to decide propriety of reception of the airwave. The control unit iterates counterclockwise and clockwise shifts alternately in a region near the reference direction, while the shift magnitude of the pointing direction is being increased in succession and so that the direction as to which the propriety of reception has been decided once may not be included in the directions of the shifts, until the reception of the airwave becomes possible.
