  • Patent number: 9939247
Abstract: A wear monitoring system for measuring incursion depth into an abradable coating includes a layer of abradable coating including a depth. At least one measurement circuit includes a plurality of conductive leads disposed within the abradable coating. The conductive leads are spaced radially apart within a common radial plane corresponding to the depth of the abradable coating. A plurality of resistor elements corresponds with the plurality of conductive leads. Each of the plurality of resistor elements are in electrical communication with one of the plurality of conductive leads disposed within the common radial plane of the corresponding one of the plurality of conductive leads. An electrical characteristic of the circuit varies responsive to cutting of one or more of the plurality of conductive leads by a passing airfoil. A gas turbine engine and method are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 9435724
Abstract: A test method and corresponding fixture design are provided which enable loading a circular test coupon (made, e.g., of ceramic matrix composite material) to failure under biaxial loading conditions while recording strain and temperature. Biaxial loading requires approximately equal loads to be applied in two directions concurrently. The disclosed method uses liquid coolant (e.g., liquid nitrogen) to cool a ring made of metal alloy (e.g., aluminum alloy) that is disposed radially outward from and surrounds the outer edge of the test coupon. The cooled metal alloy ring contracts and compresses the test coupon until failure occurs.

  • Publication number: 20140069179
Abstract: A seal testing apparatus includes a clamp assembly which receives, secures and rotates a piston and seal assembly, a mandrel which extends into the seal assembly and supports a guide which carries a spring biased sensing probe or tooth which is oriented along the axis of the mandrel. In another embodiment, the components are the similar except that the probe or tooth is disposed in the mandrel and extends circumferentially. In both embodiments, data from an optical, laser or acoustic sensor is analyzed to determine the integrity of the piston seal. Yet another embodiment includes an arbor which rotates the seal and an adjacent contra-rotating cylinder having a conical mirror. As the seal, arbor and cylinder rotate, light reflected off the mirror and the seal, and returned to the mirror and a sensor provide data which is again analyzed to determine the integrity of the piston seal.

  • Patent number: 8429958
Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus and a method for monitoring a sliding state of a piston ring. The present invention detects a cycle of rotation of a piston ring based on a temperature at a predetermined site of a cylinder liner, and determines a sign of burning of a piston based on a state of the rotation. As a result, it is possible to detect a sign of burning of a piston by an apparatus less expensive than apparatuses using a conventional technique of detecting a capacitance.
