  • Patent number: 7415878
Abstract: An exemplary method for balancing a rotating assembly of a turbocharger, where the rotating assembly includes a shaft rotatably supported by a bearing cartridge, includes loading the rotating assembly to introduce a tilt between the rotational axis of an inner race of the bearing cartridge and a bore axis of an outer race of the bearing cartridge, rotating the inner race with respect to the outer race at a rotational speed less than approximately 5,000 rpm while maintaining the tilt at substantially constant angle and measuring dynamic unbalance of the rotating assembly. Various other exemplary devices, systems, methods, etc., are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4981043
Abstract: A measured object support mechanism for use in an unbalance measuring apparatus for detecting vibrations resulting from rotation of a measured object supported by a measured object supporting member and measuring an unbalance of the measured object. This support mechanism comprises a slidable supporting device disposed between a base block supporting the unbalance measuring apparatus and the measured object supporting member. The support mechanism further comprises a second slidable supporting device disposed between the base block and a dummy weight in order to detect external vibrations.

  • Patent number: 4905515
Abstract: A device for measuring rotor imbalance of a rotor is disclosed. The rotor shaft housing support for the shaft for a rotor to be balanced in a machine includes two pairs of springs disposed in two parallel planes. Each pair of springs consists of two parallel bar or rod springs that support the rotor shaft housing support in a plane of oscillation coincident with the shaft of the rotor on the machine stand in such a way that it oscillates. Each of the two bar or rod springs of each pair of springs forms part of a single-piece frame. Mounting strips are attached to the machine stand and to the rotor shaft housing.

  • Patent number: 4741211
Abstract: A machine and method for conveniently dynamically balancing heavy rotational members such as large vehicle wheels is disclosed. The machine employs a horizontal rotatable shaft that is movable vertically so as to align and engage the center of the member as it stands vertically in the ground. Thereafter the shaft is raised vertically until the member clears the ground and is rotatable for balancing. In preferred embodiments the balancing mechanism is manually powered and detachable from the machine's base for transport and the base is constructed with its vertical member angled so as to preload and stress the base by the weight of the member and eliminate play in the base. The machine offers portability and transport advantages.

  • Patent number: 4612620
Abstract: Apparatus for collecting vibration data in accordance with a predetermined schedule. Operable in either a data input or program mode, the apparatus is coupled with a vibration transducer which is located at predetermined coded positions and the data collected are stored in memory. Additionally, visual inspection data may be entered in the memory in the form of a numerical code along with units designations and the like. In a data input mode of operation, the apparatus operates in conjunction with a scheduling facility which offloads the schedule during a transfer mode into the apparatus at the commencement of any given maintenance round. The schedule serves to prompt the operator as to the sequence of data collection locations, additionally providing units, alarm threshold levels and like information. At the end of the scheduled rounds, the data may be offloaded to the processing facility.

  • Patent number: 4489607
Abstract: A dynamic vehicle wheel and tire balancing system with manual rotation of the shaft to which the wheel and tire is attached. A computer within the system receives entered premeasured values of wheel dimensions and are in response to the output of a rotational speed sensor determines a proper rotational speed of the shaft at which point it automatically decouples the manually operated crank from the wheel shaft so that there can be no externally applied disturbances for the subsequent measurements of imbalance. Twin spaced transducers along the shaft determine the wheel runout attributable to imbalances in both inner and outerwheel rims and the computer provides output signals indicative of the correct balance weight and the mounting positions of the weights on the wheel rim.

  • Patent number: 4406164
Abstract: A hard bearing cradle balancing machine involving novel elements for workpiece support and end thrust restraint, angle of unbalance indication and machine mounted drill press slide. "V" block bearings incorporating independently tilting pads provide uniform journal contact without torsional restraint that would otherwise result from workpiece misalignment. A device magnetically attached to the end of the workpiece maintains axial positioning thereof and communicates rotational position and speed information to an electronic vibration analyzer, as well as rotational reference information to the machine operator. A balancer mounted drill press slide freely traverses the workpiece axis, locking up only upon application of drilling pressure at any point thereon.

  • Patent number: 4094198
Abstract: The machine comprises a shaft mounted in a housing to rotate about a horizontal axis and arranged to carry the body of revolution in a concentric position. The shaft is also capable of oscillating in the housing about a vertical axis intersecting the horizontal axis near to an end of the shaft. An elongated indicator member is mounted in the axial extension of the shaft by a ball articulation. A measuring scale is mounted on the housing adjacent the free end of the indicator member. A deviating element is adapted, in the course of rotation of the shaft, to come momentarily in contact with the indicator member so as to deviate the indicator member relative to the scale to an extent which is a function of the magnitude of the unbalance of the body of revolution. An arrangement is combined with the ball articulation for ensuring the remanence of the deviation. The deviating element is in the form of a cam rotatable by a driving motor about an axis parallel to the axis of the shaft.
