Abstract: A rotating power transfer system for an automotive fuel cell vehicle includes one of an impeller and turbine in fluid communication with a fuel cell stack, an electric machine and a shaft operatively associated with the one of impeller and turbine. The system also includes a heating element disposed within the shaft. The heating element is configured to be selectively electrically coupled with a stator coil of the electric machine.
Abstract: A method for communicating data is provided that includes collecting data associated with an individual using an accelerometer. The accelerometer is operable to monitor activity associated with the individual. The method also includes communicating the data to a computing device, which can receive the data and perform any number of operations.
Abstract: An activity measuring device (1) is used for recording the activity of a test subject, where the device (1) is attachable so as to be carried on the body of the test subject. According to the invention it is planned that the activity measuring device is located on a buckle (2) of a belt (3) which can be fitted to the body of the test subject, and that it has acceleration sensors (10, 10?) for detection of acceleration in all three spatial directions at right angles to each other. Furthermore, the activity measuring device (1) telemeters the recorded measurement data via a radio link to a central server (7), by virtue of the fact that the measurement data recorded by the activity measuring device (1) can be transmitted by means of a connecting cable (5) to a mobile telephone (4) via a device interface of the mobile telephone (4), which is arranged so as to be carried on the belt, and can be sent from there to the external server (7) via a radio link.

Abstract: A ball speed detecting assembly has a detecting device consisting of a bracket adapted to firmly stand on the ground and having an opening; a net securely connected to the bracket to cover the opening; an impact receiving element securely connected to the bracket by sensors which are secured to corners of the bracket so that the sensors are able to detect the impact of the ball which hits the impact receiving element; and a displaying device consisting of a microprocessor electrically connected with the sensors and having data prestored in the microprocessor for matching the impact of the ball; and at least one speaker electrically connected with the microprocessor for sounding according to a signal from the microprocessor.
Abstract: Computer for a bicycle includes a speed change with a chain transmission, including a plurality of front crown wheels (16) which can be driven in rotation by a pair of pedal cranks (18) and a plurality of rear sprockets (20), a first sensor (30) for providing an electric signal indicating the speed of rotation of one wheel of the bicycle, a second sensor (32) for providing an electric signal indicating the speed of rotation of the pedal cranks (18), and a third sensor (38) for providing an electric signal indicating which is the selected front crown wheel. The computer has a display (24) for displaying riding information of the bicycle, and an electronic control programmed so as to determine the number of teeth (Zp) of the selected rear sprocket as a function of said signals and as a function of stored data indicating the number of teeth (Zc) of the front crown wheels (16).
Abstract: A new class of micromechanical acceleration history discriminators is claimed. These discriminators allow the precise differentiation of a wide range of acceleration-time histories, thereby allowing adaptive events to be triggered in response to the severity (or lack thereof) of an external environment. Such devices have applications in airbag activation, and other safety and surety applications.
Abstract: An apparatus for the automatic release of passenger protection devices in motor vehicles in the event of an accident has a sensor (35) having a mass (10) secured outside the center of mass (11). This mass (10) generates a comparably high torque in the suspension in the event of both positional change and rotational acceleration. These torques are detected with known measuring methods and split, with the aid of a high-pass filter (36) and a low-pass filter (40), into a high-frequency and a low-frequency portion. The high frequency portion corresponds to the rotational acceleration, from which the rotational velocity is obtained by means of an integrator (38). The low-frequency portion corresponds to the position of the motor vehicle. Thus both measurement variables that must be detected for releasing a roll bar are obtained with a single sensor (35).

Abstract: Apparatus for deflecting a pointer in proportion to the rotational speed of a shaft comprises a support, a governor mounted on the support, an indicator mounted on the support and an angled calibrating lever pivotally mounted on the support and connecting the governor to the indicator. The governor includes an input member adapted to be operably connected to the shaft for rotation therewith and an output member movable in a given direction (typically parallel to the axis of shaft rotation) to a degree generally related to the rotational speed of the shaft. The indicator includes a drum, a pointer operably connected to the drum for movement therewith, and a flexible member at least partially wound about the drum so that the drum is rotated by the unwinding of the flexible member therefrom. The angled calibrating lever has one leg bearing against the output member for motion therewith and the other leg secured to a portion of the flexible member for unwinding the flexible member from the drum.
