  • Patent number: 4782714
Abstract: A collar shift type transmission is arranged to provide an increased number of speed changes from a reduced number of gears and shafts. The transmission has a main shaft, an output shaft and two intermediate shafts with a plurality of intermeshing gear sets located about each shaft. Collar shift elements for engaging different gears to provide a multiplicity of speed and range changes are provided only on the main shaft and one intermediate shaft. Arrangement of the gears of each set in pairs maximizes the number of gear changes while minimizing the required number of gears, collar shift elements and control mechanisms. The main shaft preferably is provided with synchronizer clutches and close coupled to the driven portion of a main clutch to minimize the momentum transfer through the synchronizers. A sectional housing for the transmission supports an eccentrically mounted hydraulic pump which can be rotated to a plurality of positions.

  • Patent number: 4777837
Abstract: A transmission is provided for transfering power from an input shaft to an output shaft in a large number of ratios derived by the use of main gear groups, a range gear group and a reversing gear. Power is provided by either of two power paths thus making possible shifting under load. A friction clutch selects one or the other of the power paths and synchronizing clutches select which of a plurality of ratios will be provided by the selected path. While driving in one path, the next ratio is selected in the other path and at a selected time power is shifted from one path to the other. Because the transmission provides several ranges of ratios and several ratios in each range including a reverse in each ratio, a vehicle using this transmission may be used for a plurality of tasks and be efficient at each. By using duplicate parts and multiple shafts the transmission can be provided in a compact size and at a reduced cost.

  • Patent number: 4771647
Abstract: A countershaft transmission includes first and second directional clutches and first, second and third speed clutches of the hydraulically actuated, rotating disc type to provide three forward speeds and three reverse speeds for a track-type tractor or the like. Included is an input shaft with first and second gears connected to rotate therewith that define midplanes normal to the input shaft. The directional clutches and the speed clutches are located axially between the midplanes in radially aligned relationships and a plurality of other constantly meshing gears are used including at least one pair of gears located axially exteriorly of the midplanes for compactness and to promote speed reduction ratio flexibility. A second embodiment provides six forward speeds by adding a directional clutch and another gear within the same compact dimensions.

  • Patent number: 4726246
Abstract: Countershaft transmissions are useful for vehicles such as lift trucks or the like. But obtaining the desired speed reduction ratios and alignment of the various axes where space is at a premium is difficult. The subject countershaft transmission provides two forward speeds and two reverse speeds using four compactly grouped rotating clutch assemblies of the interleaved multiple plate and disc type for selectively connecting a plurality of constantly meshing gears in preselected patterns. A reverse clutch assembly is mounted on a first shaft, a forward clutch assembly and a low speed clutch assembly are mounted on a second shaft, and a high speed clutch assembly is mounted on a third shaft. A fourth shaft having a bevel pinion gear thereon is located at a minimal drop height "D" from the first shaft so that the longitudinal axis of the bevel pinion gear can intersect the transverse axis of a bevel ring gear associated therewith.

  • Patent number: 4686869
Abstract: A tractor transmission includes a pair of dual power clutches that connects an engine to an input shaft through a gearset that selectively makes a direct connection or overdrives the shaft in accordance with the engaged or disengaged state of the clutches. A synchronizer connects the input shaft to an interior shaft of the transmission. A gear selector moves the sleeve of the synchronizer into engagement either with a gear on the input shaft or a gear on the interior shaft. When certain upshifts are made, the gear selector causes the clutch that overdrives the input shaft gear to disengage and the clutch that directly connects the input shaft gear to the engine to engage. This action slows the gear toward the synchronous speed at which the synchronizer connects the input gear to the interior shaft with minimal shifting effort.

  • Patent number: 4677874
Abstract: A transmission for a motor vehicle comprises a multispeed change gear set comprising a plurality of loose spur gears and a plurality of fixed spur gears, each of which is permanently in mesh with one of the loose spur gears. The transmission comprises a second gear set, which is adapted to be selectively driven by the change gear set. The change gear set comprises an input shaft and two gear set output shafts. The loose spur gears for relatively low speeds are rotatably mounted on and adapted to be coupled to the first gear set output shaft. The loose spur gears for relatively high speeds are rotatably mounted on and adapted to be coupled to the second gear set output shaft. To simplify the structure and to reduce the overall size of the transmission in the direction of the input and output shafts, an additional spur gear is non-rotatably mounted on each gear set output shaft and is in mesh with a common idler gear, which is adapted to be coupled to a pinion, which is in mesh with a final output gear.

  • Patent number: 4635495
Abstract: A multi-speed power transmission utilizing ten gears, seven clutches and four shafts provides eight forward speeds and four reverse speeds. The transmission is coaxial in that the input and the output shafts are on the same centerline. The transmission requires only a minimum number of gears, clutches and shafts for the large number of gear ratios provided, and at the same time it is relatively compact and has only three shaft centers. In this transmission there are always three clutches applied in any speed range. Of the seven shifts between forward speed ranges, four of them require the engagement of one different clutch only, two of them require two different clutches to engage simultaneously, and one shift requires engaging three different clutches. The clutches are of the type having multiple friction plates, and hydraulically applied force pistons which are spring load returned. The clutches include appropriate ball dump valves in the force pistons.

  • Patent number: 4398432
Abstract: A vehicle transmission having power shift means and an overrunning clutch to selectively provide a multiple speed transmission with shifting of the vehicle transmission while the vehicle is operating. The transmission includes a main drive shaft, a jackshaft and a countershaft with a selective manual gear shift on the countershaft. The main drive is through the countershaft and a plurality of gearsets having clutching means to manually select one of a plurality of speed ratios. The first input speed drives through the first overrunning clutch to the main drive shaft. The jackshaft is selectively engaged through a power shift clutch to provide a second input speed to the main drive shaft. When the jackshaft is in operation, the first overrunning clutch is disengaged and the drive is through the power shift clutch to rotate the main drive shaft at the higher speed.

  • Patent number: 4341127
Abstract: A multiple speed transmission with a plurality of shafts and gears and divided into a number of shift units. Insofar as possible, the respective corresponding shafts and gears among the shift units have substantially the same pitch dimensions. In a multi-speed, single direction transmission, there are two gear and clutch carrying shafts. A clutch in one shift unit joins a gear fixed to the shaft of that shift unit with one or the other of two gears rotatable with respect to the shaft of that shift unit. An additional gear is fixedly mounted on the shaft. The two of such shift units are engaged with different respective ones of their gears being in direct or indirect engagement. For a reversing direction transmission, an intermediate, and therefore direction reversing, gear is interposed between the gears of one interengaged set of gears. In another embodiment, a direction reversing shift unit is connected to one of the two shift units of a single direction transmission.
