  • Patent number: 9174715
Abstract: An apparatus is for a changing gear in a marine propulsion system. A cam rotates about a first axis with a shift shaft. The cam has a body and an arm that radially extends from the body with respect to the first axis. A cam follower moves parallel to a second axis that is perpendicular to the first axis to cause movement of a clutch, thereby enacting a gear change. The cam follower defines a pocket that is elongated with respect to the second axis and a recess that extends from the pocket along a third axis that is perpendicular to the first and second axes. The cam is disposed in the pocket and the arm extends into the recess. During a constant rotation of the shift shaft in a first direction about the first axis, the cam follower moves with respect to the second axis to enact the gear change and also dwells with respect to the second axis.

Abstract: In an apparatus for rolling metal ribbon stock into convoluted fin strip for use in heat exchangers, an uncoiler apparatus comprising a base, a pair of coil supports for supporting a pair of coils of sheet metal ribbon stock. The coil supports are mounted on a plate which is rotatable about a vertical axis so that when the plate is rotated, one coil support is moved into driving engagement with the motor and the other coil support is moved out of driving engagement with the motor. A control system interconnects the drive of the motor on the uncoiler apparatus with the drive of the remainder of the corrugated fin rolling machine for positively driving the uncoiler as a function of machine speed.

  • Patent number: 4735104
Abstract: An input shaft is keyed to a first bevel gear, in constant mesh engagement with a second bevel gear keyed to a countershaft and rigidly associated with a first clutch, for causing a first pinion to become rotatively engaged with or disengaged from the input shaft. The second bevel gear is rigidly associated with a second clutch for causing a second pinion to become rotatively engaged with or disengaged from the countershaft. The first and the second pinions are in constant mesh engagement with an output bevel gear keyed to an output shaft, so that by selectively engaging one of the clutches and disengaging another of the clutches, the input and output shafts can be selectively caused to rotate counter-directionally or co-directionally. The axes of the shafts converge towards a common point to simplify the gear arrangements.

  • Patent number: 4735105
Abstract: An improved driving arrangement for a four wheel off the road vehicle having a combined engine and transmission with the engine output shaft and transmission primary and secondary shafts extending transversely relative to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. An auxiliary transmission having a pair of driven bevel gears rotating in opposite directions is affixed to the side of the main transmission and embodies a dog clutching arrangement for selectively clutching either of the bevel gears to a drive shaft that drives the rear axle of the vehicle. An interlock arrangement is incorporated so as to prevent shifting of the change speed transmission out of neutral or first gear when the auxiliary transmission is in reverse and for preventing shifting of the auxiliary transmission into reverse except when the change speed transmission is in neutral or low gear. In addition, an overload release device is incorporated in the driving arrangement for protecting the transmission from undue loads.

Abstract: A new type of robotic device is disclosed, using several cable trussed compression members in concert. The cable trussed compression members are deformed along the length of their central compression mast, by the lengthening and shortening in concert of all of the cables of each cable trussed compression member, through the use of motors. Weights traveling on tracks, or fluid filled hoses, are used in addition to the deformation of the cable trussed compression members, to change the location of the center of gravity of the entire assembly, thereby enhancing the balancing and stability of the robotic device. Additional known mechanical and electrical devices may be used in conjunction with the several cable trussed compression members.

  • Patent number: 4653338
Abstract: The preferred embodiment can be incorporated into a powered instrument which rotates a tool. The preferred embodiment permits changing the direction of rotation of the tool without using the hand that does not grip the instrument housing to operate the tool, and without altering the grip on the instrument. The preferred embodiment includes an actuator which moves between two positions to selectively couple two rotating members to an output shaft. The output shaft is rotated in one direction when one rotating member is coupled to the shaft and is rotated in the remaining direction when the remaining rotating member is coupled to the shaft. Movement of the actuator between its two operative positions can be achieved by pushing on the instrument housing to push the tool against the workpiece, or by pulling the instrument housing away from the chuck if the tool is embedded within the workpiece.

The drives include forward, neutral and reverse transmissions of the bevel gear type and which provide counter-rotation of the respective associated propellers. One of the transmissions is shifted in one direction to shift from neutral to forward while the other transmission is shifted in the opposite direction to shift from neutral to forward. • Patent number: 4630719
Abstract: A cone clutch sleeve (18) on a main shaft (15) is moved axially between forward and reverse counter-rotating gears (13 and 14) by a yoke (102) having mirror-image oppositely tapered cams (108 and 109) on opposite sides thereof which are selectively rotatable to engage eccentric rings (132 and 133) on the forward and reverse gears. This engagement drives the yoke away from the one engaged gear and toward the other gear to in turn drive the clutch sleeve out of engagement with the one gear such that torque applied through the cam-engaged gear ring assists clutch disengagement of the one gear such that requisite shift force decreases as speed and torque increases. The eccentric face surface of each ring actuates the yoke and drives the sleeve member out of engagement with the one gear and into engagement with the other gear with a pulsed impact hammer effect due to the eccentricity of the face surface as it rotates in a circumferential plane about the main shaft.

Abstract: The present invention provides apparatus for changing the direction of rotation of a rotating shaft without changing the direction of rotation of the motor driving the shaft. The present invention includes a drive gear which causes two driven bevel gears to rotate in opposite directions. A control shaft having cam surfaces selectively forces one of two sets of balls into engagement with one of the driven gears to couple that gear with the driven shaft to rotate the shaft in one direction. Rotation of the driven shaft is reversed by changing the position of the control shaft which uncouples one set of balls from the driven shaft and couples the remaining set of balls to the driven shaft.
