Abstract: A method of manufacturing a steering rack for a vehicle rack and pinion steering system. The rack comprises gear teeth and a shank that has a constant outside diameter and constant wall thickness over the majority of its length. The method comprises performing a forging operation on a tubular member with an elongate member positioned in the bore of a thickened region of the tubular member. The forging operation forms the gear teeth on the thickened region, and the elongate member is retained within the tubular member. The tubular member is made by performing a forming operation on a length of tube stock such that the outside diameter of the thickened region is smaller than the outside diameter of the shank, and the wall thickness of the thickened region is larger than the wall thickness of the shank.

  • Patent number: 6470993
Abstract: An electronic power steering apparatus according to the present invention uses hypoid gears having a larger gear on a steering assisting motor side and a smaller gear on a pinion shaft side as a transmission device for transmitting a rotational force of the motor to the pinion shaft or a column shaft, thereby reducing a shaft-to-shaft distance required between the motor and the pinion shaft. Further, rack teeth, which have a pressure angle that reduces toward both of the ends of a moving stroke of a rack shaft, are formed on the rack shaft that engages the pinion gear so that an insufficient steering assisting force is supplemented at the stroke ends, that is, at a large steering range; thus, it is possible to miniaturize the motor. Therefore, it becomes possible to reduce a space occupied by the motor on the periphery of the column shaft or the pinion shaft, and consequently to allow easy installation inside the automobile room or the engine room.

Abstract: An apparatus (10) for use in turning steerable vehicle wheels includes a rack gear (14) and a sector gear (16) which are disposed in meshing engagement. A lash adjustment assembly (46) is operable to move the sector gear (16) to reduce clearance between teeth (18 and 20) on the rack and sector gears upon rotation of the sector gear to an initial or on-center condition. The lash adjustment assembly (46) includes a force transmitting member (60) having a threaded end portion (90) which engages threads (92) on the sector gear (16). A power spring (100) is connected with the force transmitting member (60) and stores energy to rotate the force transmitting member relative to the sector gear (16). When the sector gear (16) moves to the on-center condition, an index pin (150) is moved relative to an index wheel (138) to release the force transmitting member (60) for rotation through a predetermined distance relative to the sector gear (16).
