  • Patent number: 11110524
Abstract: A rotary cutting tool includes a replaceable cutting insert, a pocket portion for holding the cutting insert, and a chip flute portion having a plurality of helical flutes. An internal coolant passage is formed in the chip flute portion and has both a twisted geometry and a “see-through” central portion. The internal coolant passage is polygonal in cross-sectional shape having a number of cusps equal to the number of flutes. The internal coolant passage greatly increases coolant flow area, while maintaining the stiffness and rigidity of the cutting tool. A method includes forming the internal coolant passage using additive manufacturing such that the internal coolant passage has a “see-through” central portion and a twisted geometry.

  • Patent number: 8029215
Abstract: A spiral drill bit for forming holes of a variety of sizes has a main body which provides first and second helical grooves. First and second flutes extend along the length of the main body to provide first and second helical groove segments. Cutting segments are provided between the helical groove segments. The method for forming the spiral drill bit includes turning the helical groove segments onto a round stock. An axial clearance and an initial diametral clearance are provided upon turning the helical grooves. A grinding process is used to form a radial clearance and a final diametral clearance. The reduction to the amount of grinding required to form the spiral drill bit results in a reduction to the cost of production and a reduction in the time necessary to produce the spiral drill bit.

Abstract: A drill for making a hole within a workpiece has a body extending along a longitudinal axis, at least one flute extending along the body, and a drill point extending from the end of the body. The drill point has a periphery and is comprised of a chisel edge, a primary cutting edge extending inwardly from the periphery, a secondary cutting edge extending outwardly from the chisel edge, and a tertiary cutting edge connecting the primary cutting edge with the secondary cutting edge, wherein the tertiary cutting edge has a negative axial rake angle. A method for producing such a drill point is also disclosed wherein in one grinding pass a gash forms the axial rake angle of the secondary cutting edge, and in a separate grinding pass a portion of the secondary cutting edge is removed to produce a tertiary cutting edge having an axial rake angle that is negative.

  • Patent number: 7832966
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a helical drill configuration that allows substantially flat bottomed holes to be machined. At the cutting end of the body member, there are at least two cutting edges that are symmetrically oriented on opposing sides of the rotational axis of the drill. In an embodiment of the invention, first and second cutting edge portions form a continuous surface which provides strength and tool stability. The height of the second portions of each of the cutting edges remains relatively consistent along the horizontal for formation of a generally flat bottom hole. In the embodiment, a center point is defined by two sloped peak surfaces. A central straight chisel edge is formed by the intersection of the two sloped peak surfaces. The first cutting edge section extends from the chisel edge to the second cutting edge section. The first cutting edge section for both cutting edges is formed by symmetrically thinning the two peak surface.
