Abstract: A device for sharpening the cutting teeth of a chain saw includes a frame having an upper web and first and second side walls, and an open area defining a sharpening area. The device further includes at least one clamping member operable with at least one of the first and second sidewalls of the frame for securing the frame to the guide bar of the chain saw. The device still further includes a second clamping member movably supported about the frame, which operates to engage a chain saw tooth of a chain and to fix its position within the sharpening area. The second clamping member includes a tooth stop for adjusting the position of the chain saw tooth within the sharpening area. The tooth stop includes a pawl support block and a pawl having at least one working portion engageable with the chain at different positions along a lateral axis of the pawl support block to provide clearance for a sharpening tool within the sharpening area.
Abstract: A fixture configured to file a chain of a chain saw. The fixture includes at least one pair of flanges, wherein each of the flanges has a first end and a second end. Further, a first connecting portion connects the flanges at their first ends, and a second connecting portion connects the flanges at their second ends. Further, the first connecting portion includes a pair of counter holds configured to provide area contact with a guide bar of the chain saw. The fixture also includes a cam portion pivotally coupled to the second connecting portion, wherein the cam portion and at least one of the counter holds simultaneously secure the fixture to the guide bar.
Abstract: A hard-faced cutting blade and hard-facing method is provided. A hard-facing material is applied to a cutting edge of a cutting blade such that a heat-affected transition zone may be created between the base metal and the hard-facing material. The heat-affected transition zone may create a sufficient bond to help resist delamination and flaking of the hard-facing material from the base metal.
Abstract: A saw chain sharpener for a chain saw and a chain saw having a sharpener in which the bottom surfaces of the cutting teeth of a conventional bottom sharpened saw chain are conveniently sharpened automatically by running the chain under power through the sharpener. The saw chain can be sharpened using the sharpener in a matter of typically twenty to thirty seconds without removing the chain from the chain bar. The sharpener is preferably adapted to be removably mounted to a bracket which is itself preferably removably disposed on the chain saw. The sharpener comprises a sharpening tooth disposed in a housing which is mounted on the chain bar. A top surface of the sharpening tooth frictionally engages bottom surfaces of the cutting teeth of the chain as the chain is run under power. A device for dispensing a sharpening compound to the sharpening tooth during sharpening may be disposed on the sharpener housing.
Abstract: A guide which can be mounted to the teeth of a saw blade, for guiding a file used to sharpen the blade's teeth. The file guide comprises two spaced-apart, substantially parallel arms adapted to receive a saw blade therebetween. Each of the substantially parallel arms has a main arm portion and a secondary arm portion connected to one another by a preferably pivoted elbow portion. The file guide further comprises a guide member adapted to straddle the saw blade, and a tooth engaging member connected to, and disposed between, the secondary arm portions. The substantially parallel arms, guide member and tooth engaging member are arranged with respect to one another, such that the guide firmly engages a saw blade when the tooth engaging member and the guide member are brought against the teeth of the saw blade, with the saw blade being received between the substantially parallel arms. Preferably, rollers are mounted on the guide member, which rollers guide a file inserted therebetween.
Abstract: A chain saw sharpening tool having a channel section which fits over a saw chain and cutter bar and has a file holder guide secured thereto for engaging a file holder and orienting it with respect to the saw chain during filing of the saw chain teeth for sharpening.
