The first fixture portion is coupled to the body locating portion and includes a post member for engaging a latch ratchet of the latch mechanism and an outrigger structure for engaging the door structure to thereby limit an amount by which the tool may rotate about the post member. The second fixture portion may be coupled to one of the body fixture portion and the first fixture portion. The second fixture portion includes a plate member and a latch clamp. The plate member has a slot for receiving the leg member of the striker structure with the slot having a proximal end and a generally open distal end.

  • Patent number: 6260454
Abstract: A method for adjusting the camber of a vehicle wheel having an axis of rotation and having camber adjustment means comprising the steps of loosening the wheel camber adjustment means while the wheel bears part of the motor vehicle's sprung mass, applying a clamp tool substantially vertically to the wheel whereby the tool straddles the wheel perpendicular to the axis of rotation, pivoting the tool and the wheel attached thereto perpendicular to the axis of rotation to a desired camber, and tightening said camber adjustment means. The clamp tool comprises a clamp having opposed inner and outer arms for engaging the respective inner and outer sidewalls of the wheel, at least one of the inner and outer clamp arms being extensible for engaging a wheel sidewall, means for adjusting the tool for snug engagement of the inner and outer arms with the wheel sidewalls, and lever means detachably connected to the tool for pivoting the tool and the wheel engaged by the tool.

  • Patent number: 6209427
Abstract: An adjustment tool is provided for performing vehicle suspension alignment procedures where it is necessary to adjust the space between suspension components. Embodiments include an expanding adjustment tool with a first arm and a second arm that pivots relative to the first arm, and an adjuster, such as a wedge, for moving the first and second arms relative to each other. Both arms have detachable tips, such as spreader plates, yokes, wedges, etc. of different sizes and shapes, which tips are easily interchangeable depending on the particular application. The adjuster is rotatable to adjust the relative positions of the arms, and has an end engagable with a standard ratchet, thereby allowing extensions, swivels, etc. to be connected to the adjuster as needed to facilitate the alignment procedure in tight spaces. Thus, a single adjusting tool easily performs adjustments on a wide variety of vehicles with minimal additional cost.

  • Patent number: 6006635
Abstract: An apparatus and method for positioning a latch assembly and a striker on a motor vehicle is disclosed. The apparatus is designed to improve the fit of the tailgate to the side walls or truck body. A good fit is defined as the outer surface of the tailgate and the outer surface of the side wall being coplanar when the tailgate is in the closed position. The apparatus, by way of a first formation and first locating element, determines the position of the latch assembly with respect to outer surface of the tailgate. The apparatus, by way of a second formation and second locating element, also determines the location of the striker with respect to the outer surface of the side walls. The apparatus, by way of a body member, also determines the position of the striker with respect to the latch assembly and vice versa. By setting the latch assembly and the striker by the above relations, build variances of the tailgate and of the truck body are eliminated as a possible cause for a poor fit.

  • Patent number: 5894769
Abstract: A front end alignment tool (10) for a front suspension system (12) of a motor vehicle (14) comprising an elongate bolt (16). A foot (20) is also provided. A structure (22) is for attaching the foot (20) to a first end (24) of the elongate bolt (16). An assembly (26) is for mounting transversely and in an operable manner the elongate bolt (16) onto either end shaft (28) and (29) of a pivot bar (30), for an upper suspension arm (32) of the front suspension system (12). A component (38) on a second end (40) of the elongate bolt (16), is for rotating the elongate bolt (16), so that the foot (20) will bear against a frame (42) of the motor vehicle (14). This allows adjustment and tightening of a bolt (44) and nut (46) through each of two apertures (48) in the pivot bar (30) and each of two adjustment slots (50) in a suspension arm frame mount (52) of the front suspension system (12) attached to the frame (42) of the motor vehicle (14).

Abstract: A release tool is provided to aid in the unlocking of extending towing arms. The tool is adapted to fit a tow bar assembly that has a telescoping towing arm which is locked in an extended position by a slideable collar. The collar is moveable between a locked position and a released position. When in the locked position, the collar holds catches in engagement with legs of the towing arm to hold the legs fixed relative to each other. When in the released position, the legs are free to telescope relative to each other. Stress can build-up in the towing arms making it difficult to move the collar from the locked position to the released position. The release tool of the present invention provides a mechanical advantage to aid in the movement of the collar from the locked position to the released position. A cam surface on the tool engages the collar and moves it from the locked position to the released position as a handle is rotated about a fulcrum means.
