  • Patent number: 5642650
Abstract: Depleted stock feeder tubes, and feed malfunctions, are detected in bar fed machines such as automatic screw machines, CNC lathes and the like, employing reciprocating feed tubes with flexible feed fingers that grip the stock, with a sensor assembly mounted on a pivoted stock feeding lever or other feeder mechanism. The body of the sensor assembly is positioned to press against a roller or other connecting member extending laterally from the feed tube assembly, and retract the feed tube. A plunger or other reciprocating contact member is mounted in and biased to extend from the body. If a feed tube is stocked when the feed tube is retracted, the force required to retract the feed tube is greater than the biasing force on the plunger, the plunger moves, and a proximity sensor or other detector senses the new position or motion of the plunger.

  • Patent number: 5471900
Abstract: In a two-axis turning machine, the cutting tool unit machines a first diameter of a workpiece portion of barstock extending from a main spindle chuck. A special subspindle chuck rotating in the same direction advances axially, grasps the workpiece as it is cut off from the barstock, and retracts. The barstock is fed through the first chuck for subsequent first operation machining and located against a stop which is independent of the tool slides. The subspindle chuck rotation is reversed, displacing the first-generated workpiece axis from the subspindle axis, and a second diameter, eccentric to the first diameter, is formed by the cutting tool unit in a second operation.

  • Patent number: 5459915
Abstract: The invention relates to improvements in the multiple spindle rotary indexing machine tool systems of the prior art. Traditionally, such machine tool systems include a base and an upstanding vertical column which houses a plurality of machining stations each equipped with two-axis tool slides. In addition, the base supports a rotatable worktable, which carries a number of work-holding spindles. As the worktable rotates, these spindles are indexed through successive machining stations where a variety of operations are performed. In accordance with the invention, a spindle position measurement unit is provided to dynamically measure the exact location of each spindle indexed to position at a modified machining station. A computerized numerical control system calculates spindle position errors based on the position information provided by the measurement unit and offsets tool slide position commands to compensate for those errors.

  • Patent number: 5398741
Abstract: A method and apparatus for rotary-cutting a timber to peel off a veneer by a cutting knife from the outer periphery of a timber while rotating the timber around its longitudinal axis. The timber is gripped at its two end faces by means of chucking pawls which are driven in rotation. The chucking pawls comprise a plurality of chucks which are different in radial position. The chucks grip the timber at the end faces thereof adjacent to the outer peripheral surface of the timber, and as the timber is cut by the knife and reduced in diameter so that the knife comes close to a presently outermost chuck, the outermost chuck is retracted axially away from the end face of the timber, and the next outermost chuck continues to grip the timber adjacent to the presently outer peripheral surface of the timber. For this reason, the gripping force by the chuck pawls, resisting the cutting force moment, can be made small, and the timber gripping is made reliable.

  • Patent number: 5157998
Abstract: An attachment assembly for a multi-spindle screw machines which provides positive part recovery and increased back-machining capabilities. The attachment is fully integrated in the host multi-spindle machine to complete cut-off, back-machining operations, and part recovery within the cycle time of the host machine. The configuration and construction of the attachment assembly provides reliable operation with minimum adjustment and simplified trouble-shooting through a central processing display panel. The integration of the components also simplifies tool changes and adjustments for production of different parts. As a result, the cut-off and back-machining are accomplished within the limited cycle time of the multi-spindle machine while recovery of the finished part ensures diversion to the proper storage bin prior to return to the start position to pick-off the next production part.

  • Patent number: 5152201
Abstract: In machining a blank material on an automatic lathe of the type having first and second headstocks slidably carried along a bed, the first and second headstocks are slidable along their respective machining axes, and the first headstock grips the blank material to take a front machining, whereupon the semi-machined blank material, i.e., a workpiece is transferred to the second headstock to take a rear machining. The lathe also has first and second guide bushes for intermediately guiding the workpiece near the working point while the workpiece is gripped by the first and second headstocks. For machining a blank material in the form of a cylindrical rod continuously, the entire machining cycle can be divided into the front and rear machinings. Thus it is possible to shorten the machining cycle period.

  • Patent number: 5134910
Abstract: A method of simultaneously cutting the surfaces of a set of a plurality of rolls made flush with one plane, disposed at equal angular intervals, and forming a central caliber therebetween, by means of a cutter provided with cutting tools in the same number as that of the rolls. The cutter holds the cutting edge of the cutting tool in parallel with the cutter shaft and adapts the cutting edge to face the just front side of one of the rolls for the purpose of cutting. In cutting, in addition to the movement of the cutter in the axial direction Z and circumferential direction .theta., the cutting tool moves in the radial direction R of the cutter shaft. Thus, the cutting edge 21a' is kept facing the roll shaft at right angles all the time in spite of positional change in the circumferential direction .theta., whereby simultaneous and continuous shaping of not only the caliber surface but also round parts 10b on both sides of the shoulder and 120.degree. surface is made possible.
