Abstract: A control panel 21 has a display screen 22. An operator turns a low-thrust pressing key 28 ON in the menu key group 26 displayed on the display screen 22. In this state, the operator turns an operating dial 32 of a manual pulse generator 31, thereby causing an encoder 34 to generate pulses. When the encoder 34 outputs a pulse signal as a command signal, and a servomotor 17 is driven in accordance with the command signal, the tailstock is advanced. With the distal end of a tailstock center contacting a center hole of the workpiece, the operator turns the operating dial 32, thereby finely adjusting the drive torque of the servomotor. Accordingly, the thrust of the tailstock center is finely adjusted, so that the tailstock center is pressed against the workpiece by a low thrust.

Abstract: 1) The carving vise holds an article to be carved at optimal positions for ease of carving. Its design reduces carvers fatigue; damage to the carving article while being held; and the likelihood of carving injuries. It also greatly improves the carvers carving efficiency. 2) Significant design features are the reduction in the amount of repositioning release mechanisms to reposition the craving article. The design is unique in that the carving article can be moved in three ways. Rotated 360 degrees around the head and tail stock axis, 2) rotated 90 degrees relative to the work bench to which it is mounted, 3) slides in and out relative to the mounting point. The head and tail stock will move independently and also can be repositioned while securely holding a carving article by moving the square tube assembly. The locking mechanism for rotational movement and the brake assembly for locking the vise in vertical positions are new simplistic designs that securely lock in all positions.

  • Patent number: 7316173
Abstract: Woodturners who make bowls frequently find that the unoccupied tailstock limits the path of the tool handle. The normal solution is to manually remove the tailstock from the lathe and set it on the floor or a work bench. Tailstocks can be heavy and manual removal and reinstallation might be needed several times during the production of a single piece. The invention provides a means to get the tailstock out of the turners way via a short bed extension that is pivotally mounted on the end of the lathe bed. To use it, the tail stock is slid back onto the extension, a hold down is released, and the tailstock is tilted away from the user. After tilting, a second set of ways lines up with the existing bed, allowing full use of the additional length afforded by the invention. The invention allows the tailstock to be easily returned to its normal position.

  • Patent number: 6122998
Abstract: A force control method for a bar feeder supporting a workpiece in a lathe, including seizing the workpiece by a Z-axis spindle of the lathe and the bar feeder, performing position control by the Z-axis spindle of the lathe, and performing force control by the bar feeder to apply a constant torque to the workpiece during the force control of the bar feeder supporting the workpiece in the lathe. This control of the bar feeder does not require the Z-axis spindle of the lathe and the bar feeder to be synchronized for the position control in the Z-axis direction, and prevents the workpiece from being deflected.

  • Patent number: 6000447
Abstract: A mechanism for clamping a banjo (10) toolrest or toolrest bracket to a lathe bed (51) which makes use of a sliding cam (40) which is actuated by a drive shaft (18). The cam is supported independently of the drive shaft by a support block (12) resting on a ledge (14) wich is formed in the base of the banjo. The cam is slidable with respect to the drive shaft along the length of this ledge on the banjo. This structure allows for sturdy clamping with minimal deflection at a predicable catching position along the length of the banjo rest. An eye bolt (20) is used to connect the cam to a clamping plate (22) which is positioned below two, spaced-apart rails (50) extending along the top of the lathe bed. The banjo rest has a generally open bottom (94) through which the shank of the eye bolt extends. Opposite ends of the drive shaft are rotatably supported by end walls (74, 76) of the banjo rest.

  • Patent number: 5964016
Abstract: In the case where a product having a free-curved surface is obtained, a machining work is performed by separate machine tools. Therefore, works of attaching and removing a half-machined product are necessary. Consequently, a lot of working time and labor are required. Also in an automatic production system, productivity is lowered if the system is stopped by failure in gripping during the attaching and removing works and an enormous equipment cost is required. A machining apparatus M comprises a main chuck head 1 having a control axis for holding and rotating a long bar member W, a head stock assembly 3 having three or more control axes, and a bar member feeder 5 for feeding the long bar member W to the head stock assembly 3. These four axes are simultaneously controlled to manufacture a plurality of products V having free-curved surfaces from the long bar member W.

  • Patent number: 5619895
Abstract: A tailstock for a lathe. The tailstock includes a housing, a rigid sleeve mounted in the housing and being both rotatable and axially displaceable with respect to the housing, a center integral with the sleeve and disposed at a front end of the sleeve for supporting the workpiece, and a spindle which can axially displace the sleeve in the housing. Hydrostatic radial bearings support the sleeve for axial and rotational displacement of the sleeve in the housing, the sleeve and the radial bearings being disposed relative to one another such that no additional structural components are interposed therebetween, the radial bearings thereby directly contacting the outer surface of the sleeve. In addition, a hydraulic system axially supports the sleeve for compensating for changes in an axial force applied by the workpiece to the sleeve thereby keeping the axial force constant.

  • Patent number: 5575041
Abstract: A resiliently yieldable tail stock device for use in a numerically controlled lathe comprises a body slidable along a bed toward and away from a spindle, the slidable body having a bore and a passage hole each formed therethrough in an axial alignment with the spindle. Removably received within the bore of the slidable body is a center socket movable between an extended position and a retracted position and having a tapering blind bore open at its front end. The center socket carries a live center that has a pointed front end engageable with a workpiece and a tapering rear shank fitted into the tapering bore. Fixedly secured to the center socket is an elongate rod carrying a dog at its distal end. A compression spring is used to resiliently bias the center socket toward the extended position. A combination of electric motor and lead screw serves to cause a linear reciprocating movement of the slidable body. The electric motor is deenergized as the dog reaches a rearmost position just above a proximity switch.

  • Patent number: 5555178
Abstract: A machine tool such as a lathe for machining a workpiece having a longitudinal axis and being held at opposite axial ends by face drivers that are affixed to the spindle of a moveable headstock and securely contact the workpiece end faces with a predetermined pressure. A first servo loop is established to control the position of the headstock on the basis of detected position information and a second servo loop is established to control the movement of the head stock so that the pressure against the workpiece end faces is kept at predetermined values. The second servo loop may utilize the detected position of the headstock or it may utilize the monitored command value for purposes of judging whether modifications to the command value are necessary to provide the desired pressure values. A torque limiter also may be used to provide the desired control.
