    Abstract: Methods for producing slots in tube walls are described and illustrated, along with devices for producing slots in tube walls. In some cases, a first number of punches arranged in a row pierce through the tube wall and in so doing produce slots, followed by another number of punches piercing through the tube wall in such a way that the slots produced by the first number of punches alternate with respect to the slots produced by the second number of punches. Also, in some cases an internal support is used, whereby small slots are first produced in the tube wall while the internal support is within the tube. After the internal support is removed, the slots are widened to finished dimensions. The internal support can include upper and lower parts designed to engage one another in a sawtooth or undulating manner.

Further pulling on the work string partially withdraws the ramped drive assembly from the tubing punch assembly, thereby withdrawing the penetrator into the tubing punch assembly.

The internal skiving mandrel has a nose for coaxially receiving a hose end thereover, spiral cutting threads and a stop collar. Thus, when the hose is fed over the mandrel and the apparatus is rotated the simultaneous skiving of the inner and outer surfaces of the hose is accomplished.

A first knife blade (42) is pressed on an uncut hollow molded plastic part for cutting therethrough with a guillotine blade action to form an access hole (46, 48) in the plastic part (10). An outer support clamp (50, 52) is then secured about the plastic part with an outer side of the support clamp being positioned in proximity to the finished cut edge (65) of a finished plastic part. A mandrel (54) is inserted into the access hole (46, 48) of the part. The inner end of the mandrel is axially spaced from the outer side of the support clamp to allow a thin knife blade therebetween. A thin knife blade (62, 64) then cuts off the rough edge (47) to provide a finished cut edge (65) in the plastic part axially interposed between the outer side of the support clamp and the inner mandrel.

Those edges of the tooth flanks of the spline-shaft toothing at the front on the insertion side are designed as cutting edges which, during the insertion of the spline shaft into the spline hub come into engagement with a chipping effect on the tooth flanks of the spline-hub toothing. So as to avoid a risk emanating from these chips, the depth of insertion of the spline shaft into the spline hub is limited by a shoulder, and the distance between the cutting edge and the shoulder is smaller than the extension of the spline hub. As a result, the chips remain within the spline-hub toothing of the spline hub.

In a second version, the die has a slot for receiving the edge of the sheet metal as it is being nibbled so that the sheet metal and template do not buckle. Another form of the nibbling machine is employed to shape the end of a tubular workpiece mounted on an elongated anvil.

    Abstract: A tooling assembly for use with a mechanical impact press includes a pair of die blocks which effect cutting of rods, bars and tubes by the rapid misalignment of aligned apertured tools. Realignment is achieved by a reciprocable cam which also limits the extent of misalignment. Means are provided for clamping or dragging the end of a workpiece stock upstream from the prospective cutting plane. A wedge shaped recess adjacent to the aperture of the movable tool or die block provides a high degree of uniformity in workpiece length as measured at various points of a given workpiece. Where the workpiece stock is tubular, a floating mandrel is disposed within the workpiece in the upstream tool or die block while a reciprocable mandrel supports, receives, resizes and discharges the tubular workpiece.

As the press head reciprocates, the punch engages the receiving end of a gas burner tubing which is supported in a tube collar positioned within the lower part of the frame. The trailing end of the tubing is supported upon a tube arbor which is advanced incrementally towards the tube collar, as the punch is reciprocated. The apparatus is characterized by its capability of rapid punching of a longitudinally aligned series of ports in a gas burner tubing, with precise adjustment of port size and distance between ports.

    Abstract: Disclosed is an improved method and apparatus for removing damaged or worn vanes which are brazed or otherwise metallurgically attached between the concentric inner and outer shroud members of a gas turbine compressor stator. The method involves punching one of the attached vane ends in the radial direction relative to the concentric shroud members with sufficient force to shear the metallurgical joints holding the vane in the shroud slots. During punching, the shroud members are rigidly supported against deformation in the vicinity of the attached vane ends and the vane itself is supported laterally to prevent buckling thereof. With the invention, a stator can be repaired with no diminution in structural strength as compared to a new part. A punch and die assembly for use in removing a damaged vane is also disclosed.
