    Abstract: An overload assembly is disclosed for use with a tube cutting apparatus of the type having a die set for holding a tube while a blade cuts the tube. The die set comprises two die jaws having cam followers which contact a die jaw cam to move the die jaws to clamp the tube. The overload assembly allows one of the die jaws of the die set to stop moving when an obstruction is encountered. The overload assembly includes a spring mounted through a lever arm to the cam follower. An overload biasing force is applied to the cam follower through the lever arm. If an obstruction force exceeds the overload biasing force, the lever arm is rotated and the effective length of the lever arm is reduced, causing the overload biasing force to decay to a lesser value. A scarfing blade may initially score the tube prior to cutting. In one embodiment, the overload biasing force is applied to the die jaw which does not encounter a binding force between the scarfing blade and the tube.

As the upper platen and lower platen are vertically reciprocated, the rack member causes the gear sector to rotate, sliding the drive roller through an arcuate path. Movement of the drive roller through the arcuate path causes the cross slide to move in a reciprocating manner in relation to the reciprocating motion of the upper and lower platens.

The cutting assembly is accelerated axially to a velocity which matches that of the tubing being produced. Once the cutting assembly reaches the same velocity as the tubing line, the press assembly can cause downward movement of a cutting blade through the tubing. The press assembly of the present invention is alternately rotated in opposite directions to maximize the rotational extent and time available for acceleration and deceleration of the press assembly, and therefore enables the use of lightweight drive motors. Slower acceleration and deceleration also reduces wear on components used to drive and stop the press assembly.

    Abstract: The machine automatically pivots itself into alignment with the orientation of a log being drawn into the machine, and/or pivots the log, and is vertically adjustable to conform to the inclination of a log in process. To cut off an end piece of the log, a shear blade first makes a partial stroke cutting less than entirely through the log. Then the shear blade frame moves away from the input end of the machine, pulling in another length of log. Then the first cut is completed and the shear blade and shear blade frame retract to starting positions for the next cut. This cycle is repeated in automatic operation. When splitting is desired, as for firewood, the shear blade is utilized as a ram to force each end piece of the log through a splitter at the output end of the machine.
