  • Patent number: 4962683
Abstract: A variable rotary cutter assembly for transverse cutting of web material as it passes between rotating anvil and knife cylinders includes one or more cutter assemblies selectively positionable on the periphery of the knife cylinder. Various embodiments of the cutter assembly include a pair of pivotally connected block members adapted for releasable mounting on the knife cylinder and carrying an elongated knife blade which is biased outwardly by spring means about a pivot axis parallel to and spaced from the knife blade. The spring means enable a precise predetermined cutting pressure per unit length of the knife blade to be established against the anvil cylinder while enabling self-adjusting movement of the knife blade to accommodate substantial variance in anvil and knife cylinder spacing and knife blade wear. The cutter assemblies may be mounted to effect single or double transverse web cuts, and stripper means are provided to remove trim strips cut from the web by pairs of knife blades.

  • Patent number: 4962684
Abstract: A cutting device for a board machine is disclosed. The board machine includes at least two parallel shafts. One shaft is mounted by eccentric assemblies which vary the center line of rotation of the shaft. A first cutter head is mounted on that shaft and a mating cutter head is mounted on the other shaft. The first cutter head includes a first cylindrical member having external teeth which mate with a second cylindrical member having internal teeth. The mating cutter head mounts a slotting knife and a cross knife, while the first cutter head mounts an adjustable knife. The eccentric assemblies eccentrically move the shaft to reorientate the first and second cylindrical members to move the adjustable knife relative to the slotting knife to cut or score boards of different thickness while maintaining a desired spacing between the cross knife and an anvil surface defined by the second member.

  • Patent number: 4930383
Abstract: To deflect a moving paper web to respective transport paths (16, 17, 21, 25) by a cutter cylinder - counter cylinder combination (7, 8), the cylinders are oscillated back and forth above the respective transport paths by being retained in journal bearings which are eccentric with respect to the axes of rotation of the cylinders, so that, as the cylinders rotate, the nip between the cylinders will be in alignment with the respective transport path, the shift directing the leading edge of the web to a respective transport path. The cylinders, each, carry a knife and a counter element diametrically located with respect to each other, so that, as the leading edge of the web is gripped between a respective transport path, the web is severed thereafter and as the cylinder moves into alignment with the other transport path to feed the leading edge of the web to the other transport path for subsequent cutting, and so on.

  • Patent number: 4919027
Abstract: An apparatus for diverting and delivering sheets in which the sheets are positively controlled throughout the entire operation. Initially, a continuous web of paper passes between opposing cylinders comprising a rotary cutter. The lead edge of the web is then engaged by a pair of opposed nip rollers. Once held by these nip rollers, the rotary knife cuts a separate sheet from the front of the continuous web. The separate sheet then passes between and is accelerated by the nip rollers whereupon a dual set of diverting cams, in combination with a pair of conveyors, directs the sheet to one of two delivery systems. The next subsequent sheet is directed to the other delivery system so that each successive sheet is alternately diverted between the two delivery systems. Upon exiting either delivery system, the sheet is subjected to a snubbing means which decelerates the sheet and further allows the next subsequent sheet to overlap the previous sheet before being similarly decelerated.

  • Patent number: 4893534
Abstract: A cutter cylinder-counter cylinder combination pair (5, 6) has cutter knives (13, 14) and counter elements (15, 16) thereon, respectively, preferably, located diametrically opposite each other. A cutter knife (14) on one cylinder (6) cooperates with a counter element (15) on the other cylinder (5). In addition to the cutter knives and counter elements, the cylinders carry deflection elements which are positioned relative to the direction of rotation of the cylinders behind the cutter knives for deflection of the leading edge of the web (2) into one of two selected paths (18, 19; 20, 21). The deflection elements include a longer and comparatively stiff, elastic blade (11) on one cylinder and a short, and more flexible blade (10) on the other cylinder. The two elements cooperate to grip the web (2) between themselves and, upon rotation of the cylinders, the stiffer, longer blade deflects the edge (26) of the web into the given path, permitting the shorter, resilient blade to flex.

Abstract: A perforating apparatus wherein two rolls define a nip for a running web of paper which is provided with rows of transverse perforations by tools at the periphery of one of the rolls. The rolls are driven in opposite directions by a timing shaft through the medium of a system of gears including an intermediate gear which indirectly drives the one roll and is directly or indirectly mounted on an eccentric. The eccentric is driven by a power train including a differential one output shaft of which carries the eccentric and another output shaft of which is normally held against rotation but can be turned by a worm to thereby change the phase of the one output shaft relative to the input shaft of the differential to thus compensate for eventual inaccuracies in the distribution of perforating tools at the periphery of the one roll.

  • Patent number: 4658684
Abstract: A clipper for cutting wood or plywood veneer transversely and other similar continuous sheet materials is described which ensures that the sheet material is cut in alignment and the cut achieves a square edge on the material. The clipper includes at least a pair of guillotine knife blades, each blade extending transverse to the sheet material, each blade cutting against a single anvil cylinder rotating in synchronization with the sheet speed. Each blade is preferably mounted in an actuating assembly which includes a crankshaft and a connecting rod. The blade is journaled to the crank of the connecting rod at its lower portion. The upper end of the connecting rod is guided along a radial line with respect to the center line of the anvil. Upon turning the crankshaft, the blade advances simultaneously vertically and horizontally into contact with the veneer. The imparted motion is such that the blade always remains substantially perpendicular to the surface of the veneer being cut.

Abstract: A knife holder mounted upon the periphery of the knife roller in an apparatus for cutting lengths of webs such as paper is disclosed. The knife holder in the system disclosed is formed of an elastomeric material. The knife blades are held in place principally by friction in slots cut in the holder and seat themselves in the elastomer during set-up and cutting. Rapid and simple changes of knife blades without torquing or rolling in are achieved by fixing the elastomeric knife holder between readily located clamping members affixed to the surface of the knife roller, and alternative clamping members are provided for retrofit installations.

Abstract: A machine for slicing matting of brittle fiber material comprising an elastomeric coated anvil roller and a slicer roller having a plurality of cutting discs mounted on an axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the anvil roller, which depress the matting into the elastomeric material of the anvil roller sufficiently to break the brittle fibers. The sliced matting can then be conveniently cut transversely on the same machine, if desired, to form diced brittle fiber matting. The diced matting, e.g., of fiberglass is a way of facilitating the separation of short fibers from fiberglass matting to produce raw material for forming new matting, or the diced brittle fiber matting, e.g., fiberglass or carbon fiber matting may be used as such.
