  • Patent number: 5460067
Abstract: A device for performing the continuous cutting of materials of any form and nature, provided they are stratified and not flexionally rigid. The device generally comprises: fixed and mobile support surfaces; a mobile cutting shear cooperating with a fixed cutting shear; a fixed blocking unit on the fixed support surface side of the cutting shears; a mobile blocking unit on the mobile support surface side of the cutting shears; an eccentric for driving mobile portions of the device, including the mobile cutting shear, the eccentric being synchronized with the fixed and mobile blocking units; and a link block and slide guide. Non-rigid, stratified materials thereby may be more easily cut in that the invention substantially reduces or eliminates the dragging effect of the material that typically occurs during the cutting process.

  • Patent number: 5184532
Abstract: In a shear a workpiece is pressed by a holddown against a stationary blade so as to leave a piece to be cut off projecting past the blade, a movable blade is displaced forward past the stationary blade to cut off the piece, and a cut-off holder is pressed in back against the piece by a fluid-powered holding cylinder and moves back in the direction as the piece is cut off. Pressure is substantially completely relieved in the cylinder as soon as the movable blade starts to cut through the workpiece so that the cut-off holder does not substantially resist forward movement in the cutting direction. The movable blade is pressed forward in the direction against the workpiece by a main cylinder so that pressure in the main cylinder reaches a maximum level just before the movable blade starts to cut through the workpiece. The pressure in the main cylinder is monitored to trigger relief of pressure in the holding cylinder when the monitored pressure starts to decrease from the maximum level.

  • Patent number: 4805500
Abstract: A horizontal bandsaw has a main vise positioned slightly to the rear of the cutting location for gripping the workpiece during cutting, a material feed vise positioned to the rear of the main vise for feeding material into the cutting location, and a front vise positioned to the front of the cutting location. The front vise can move to a position to the rear of the cutting location to retrieve a small remnant of uncut material. The three vises each have a movable and a fixed jaw. A lower limit guide is provided on the main vise movable jaw which adjusts the descent of the cutting tool to the width of the workpiece. The fixed jaws are provided with means located within the operating area of the jaws for a slight advance or retraction of the contact face, to firmly grip the workpiece or to retract the contact face so as to prevent frictional contact with the workpiece. The movable jaws have a hydraulic cylinder built into a sliding tube for providing reciprocating motion.

  • Patent number: 4619163
Abstract: Precut pieces of wood of like configuration are stacked in a hopper from the lower end of which they are advanced one-by-one by a reciprocable pusher onto a horizontally disposed work station. As soon as a workpiece is positioned on the station it is automatically clamped into place, after which two rotary saws, which are mounted adjacent opposite ends of the station, are reciprocated from retracted to advanced positions, during which movement they cut away portions of the workpiece at opposite ends thereof. As soon as the saws have advanced passed the workpiece, they are retracted slightly away from opposite ends of the workpiece, so that they will not reengage the workpiece when they return to their starting positions. When the saws are retracted the now-cut workpiece is automatically released and then ejected from the work station, after which a cycling relay automatically causes another workpiece to be shifted onto the work station so that the above-noted steps are repeated.

  • Patent number: 4294295
Abstract: The apparatus comprises a wheel-mounted frame on which engine driven hydraulic pumps are mounted to provide hydraulic power. Extending from the side of the frame is a live deck for transporting logs transverse to their length. A longitudinal conveyor receives the logs from the live deck and transports the logs to a retractable stop to establish the length of a firewood block. A saw adapted to transversely cut the log is arranged to be lowered to cut the block from the log. A guard encloses the saw and supports clamps that clamp the log on each side of the saw during cutting. The retractable stop is retracted from the log end as the guard clamps the log for cutting. Following cutting the cut block is directed to a centering device which centers the block relative to a hydraulic actuated ram and fixed splitter blades. The block is split when forced across the splitter blades by the ram. A kicker rejects log remnants to a reject conveyor. Unsuitable blocks are rejected to the reject conveyor.
