  • Patent number: 6698476
Abstract: An apparatus includes a structure supporting a circular blade, a carriage on the structure for linear movement relative to the blade, and a lathe mounted on the carriage, the lathe rotatably supporting a workpiece in proximity to the blade. In one aspect, the support structure is pivotally connected to the carriage to allow pivoting of the lathe between an orientation for engagement of the workpiece with the blade and an orientation in which the workpiece is supported remote from the blade to facilitate operations on the workpiece with a tool implement other than the blade. In another aspect, the support plate is moveable with respect to the carriage in a direction orthogonal to a line parallel with the direction of allowed movement of the carriage relative to the frame, and a pattern plate is mounted to the support plate to control workpiece depth of cut.

  • Patent number: 5165202
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for making spectacle lens patterns are disclosed. The apparatus uses a router (or similar) bit, a spring-loaded, adjustable follower, and an existing lens (or pre-cut model) to produce patterned blanks either identically or proportionally sized to corresponding template or model lenses. The router bit rotates rapidly about its longitudinal axis as it penetrates the slowly rotating blank, producing a smooth pattern after as few as one rotation of the blank. The cover of the invention maintains the follower and cutting bit in suitable (albeit adjustable) alignment while permitting easy access to the interior of the device for inserting and removing both the lens and blank. A chute, pouch, or chip containment cavity may also be included to receive the by-products of the cutting operation for easy disposal.

  • Patent number: 5009138
Abstract: A rotary cutter device, wherein the material to be cut is placed on a table which is rotatably mounted on a base, and cut by a cutting implement attached to an articulated cutter arm assembly mounted on the base. The articulated cutter arm assembly movably extends over the rotatable table in a direction generally perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the table, with the cutting implement being securable in any of a plurality of positions along the radius of the table by movement of the articulated cutting arm. The rotatable table is mounted on a swing arm to allow the rotatable table to move with respect to the base, and detachably mounted template cams are employed, which rotate conjointly with the table and a template-cam engaging bearing, such that the axis of rotation of the table can be displaced with respect to the cutter arm to trace a shape congruent with the shape of the template cam during conjoint rotation of the table and template cam.

  • Patent number: 4372183
Abstract: The coordinate slides of a computer controlled punching and nibbling machine are coupled by resilient elements with respective nuts engaging screws driven by motors controlled by computer programming. The resilient coupling between the slides and the respective nuts permits the motors to run and thereby drive the nuts during periods when the slides are held stationary by engagement of the punching and nibbling tool with a workpiece mounted on the upper slide. As soon as the tool is disengaged from the workpiece, the workpiece is quickly moved to the next position by energy stored in the resilient elements. A sensor between each of the slides and the respective nut senses the displacement of the nut relative to the slide and transmits this information to the computer.

  • Patent number: 4092892
Abstract: The invention relates to a hole forming machine which has two or more punching heads for punching holes in a sheet of metal. The sheet of metal is moved relative to the punching heads in a guide frame to which is attached a stylus. The stylus is swept over a template having a pattern of pilot holes formed therein. By locating the stylus sequentially in the pilot holes and operating the punching heads, the pattern of holes on the template can be mapped on to the sheet of metal. The provision of two or more punching heads substantially reduces positional errors in the punched pattern.

  • Patent number: 3942566
Abstract: An apparatus for shaping a wooden workpiece according to a template configuration has a carriage displaceable on a track parallel to a guide edge of a template clamped on a table to one side of the track. A workpiece is clamped to a table to the opposite side of the track. A slide is displaceable on the carriage transverse to the track and carries on one end a roller engaging the guide edge of the template and on its other end a driven tool for cutting the shape of the template into the workpiece. The slide is urged toward the workpiece so that virtually no lateral force is exerted against the workpiece, the guide edge acting as a stop positively determining the transverse position of the slide. Another template can support a second feeler roller which is connected via a chain or the like to the tool to raise and lower this tool according to the guide edge on the second template for two-sided cutting of the workpiece.
