  • Patent number: 5943930
Abstract: In an apparatus for shearing multi-walled workpieces, such as metal framing studs, a pair of base supports are spaced relative to each other to define a blade gap therebetween, and a guillotine-like blade is slidably received within the gap for shearing the workpieces. A pair of first supports, each defining a plurality of first support surfaces, are each slidably mounted on a respective base support. A pair of second supports, each defining a plurality of second support surfaces, are also each slidably mounted on a respective base support, and the second supports are spaced apart from and face the first supports to thereby define an adjustable-width channel therebetween. Each of the first, second and base supports defines a blade-like edge located adjacent to and defining the blade gap.

  • Patent number: 5579671
Abstract: An automatic stem cutting apparatus which is designed to analyze and rapidly process full-sized substantially tree-length stems into logs, poles or other segments for further processing in pole mills, sawmills, plywood plants and the like. The stems may be scanned by an optical device and the physical characteristics of the scanned stem are either loaded into a programmable logic controller or sent to a computer connected to the programmable logic controller for determining the optimum value of the segments which can be cut from a stem. The programmable logic controller orchestrates positioning of multiple, linearly-adjustable saw carriages or modules and on-board saw blades to optimize cutting of the stem into the segments. After being scanned, the stems are sequentially transferred to a loading apparatus which positions each stem for subsequent loading onto the saw carriages.

  • Patent number: 3987694
Abstract: In a cutting board assembly having a clamp bar operated by a foot pedal mechanism for clamping papers or similar materials to the board for cutting, means are provided for accurately aligning guide markings on the paper with the cutting edge of the board. Such means include an aligning strip secured to the under surface of the clamp bar and projecting therefrom, with the straight edge of the projecting portion of the strip registering with the cutting edge of the board, whereby the markings on the paper can be visually aligned with the straight edge of the strip and therefore with the cutting edge of the board for accurate cutting. The aligning strip may be made of transparent material or of opaque material provided with apertures through which the markings can be seen. The foot pedal mechanism is also provided with adjustable stop means which limits upward travel of the clamp bar so that the aligning strip is maintained close to the paper to be cut for accurate alignment of the markings thereon.

  • Patent number: 3945285
Abstract: An upright rectangular frame has a roller conveyor in its lower horizontal member, carries hydraulically operated clamps on its upright members, and movably supports a carrier for a tilting circular saw on its upper horizontal member. A panel of plywood and the like can be cut horizontally into two sections while the lower edge of the lower section rests on the roller conveyor and the upper section is clamped to the frame. The lower section may then be shifted horizontally on the roller conveyor in the original plane of the panel and further divided into parts by vertical saw cuts, whereupon the upper panel section is lowered to the roller conveyor, and the procedure is repeated until the panel is entirely divided into portions of desired size.
