    Abstract: An improved cut length adjusting apparatus in a folding machine of a rotary press is disclosed. The folding machine generally includes only a cutting drum having two knife blades disposed along its circumference nearly at equal angular intervals, and a folding drum rotating synchronously with but in the opposite direction to the cutting drum. The knife drum is formed of an outer cylinder and an inner cylinder which are mutually rotatable and which each have one knife blade respectively projecting therefrom. The improvements reside in that a helical gear adapted to mesh with another helical gear at the axial end of the folding drum is provided at the axial end of at least one of the outer and inner cylinders, and either one of the helical gear at the axial end of the outer or inner cylinders and the helical gear at the axial end of the folding drum is movable in the axial direction.

The clamping elements are tightened by screws extending axially into each end of the drum.     Abstract: A cut off, cross perforator or scoring cylinder having a quick relese mounting for a cross-cutting or perforating blade is disclosed, hereafter called cylinder. The blade is mounted in a longitudinal groove in the periphery of the cylinder. It is held in place against a side wall of the groove by means of a retaining bar which is disposed within the groove. The retaining bar is normally urged against the blade by compression springs. In order to change blades, the retaining bar is pivoted away from the blade by means of an operating lever having pins insertable in openings in the outer wall of the retaining bar. This frees the blade for removal and enables insertion of a new blade. Endwise clamps are provided with resilient pads interposed between the clamps and the retaining bar to support the retaining bar against dislodgement while permitting pivotal movement thereof.

    Abstract: A rotary cutter for a printing press directs a web between a knife cylinder and an opposed anvil cylinder. The outer surface of the knife cylinder mounts one or more knife blade assemblies each having a sandwich construction. Each assembly includes at least one and usually two blades separated by a spacer bar. The assembly also includes a perforator blade and an ejector bar located on opposite sides of the spacer bar and set in recesses formed on the sides of the spacer bar. The perforator blade has laterally spaced sets of chisel-like teeth that impale trim pieces cut by the blades. The ejector bar reciprocates radially within the assembly to remove the trim piece from the teeth. The assembly is held together by two sets of bolts that allow the location of the blades to be set independently. A set of half rings each carrying radially projecting locating dowels are nested in circumferential grooves formed in the knife cylinder. Each ring is aligned against locating pins mounted in the knife cylinder.

The adjusting mechanism for the adjustable knife includes a row of closely adjacent wedge-like retainers which are recessed into the peripheral surface of the respective holder and are movable radially of such holder by threaded fasteners which can move the associated retainers radially inwardly against the opposition of dished springs in the respective holder.
