The transverse cutting takes place by rectilinear further motion of a transverse cutter integrated in a fixed location in the upper tool. Its shear edge is freed in ample time by a controlled escape motion of a make-up cutter. The make-up cutter permits a complete and clean trim cut to be carried out on the workpiece and also permits the shear edge of the transverse cutter to extend right up to the trim shear edge. The upper jaw includes a non-planar cutting edge that initiates the cut simultaneously at two locations located respectively on the right and left sides of the inner jaw and approximately midway between the front and rear of the inner jaw so as to produce a progressive scissors-like cutting action that proceeds simultaneously both forwardly and rearwardly from the aforesaid two locations and continues along the desired path.

  • Patent number: 4967626
Abstract: A mechanism for cutting a tire carcass into small sections for disposal. An array of adjoining female die sections has knife edges forming the sides of each die and shearing sections forming the corners of each die. Matching, shearing fit male punches opposingly face each die and material clasping anvils extend through each die facing the punches. A tire carcass is placed between the anvils and the punches. The anvils and punches are actuated against each other clamping the tire carcass. Punch pressure overrides the opposing anvil pressure, driving the combination of anvil, carcass and punch through the die. The forward extending knife edges penetrate the rubber of the carcass, shearing the rubber as the carcass is held taut between the anvils and the punches. The punches then proceed through the die, shearing the reinforcing cords against the corner shearing sections. The clamping action of the anvils and punches substantially prevents the carcass from escaping the cutter.

  • Patent number: 4846033
Abstract: Polygonally-shaped blanks useful in making products such as can parts are formed by dividing a relatively wide web of material into a plurality of relatively narrow strips, each strip having longitudinal edges delimited by scroll lines formed from a plurality of straight scroll line sections. The strips can be arranged parallel to a longitudinal axis of the web or at an angle relative thereto. It is also possible to divide the strips into individual blanks at a scrolling station or at a remote can making station. The polygonal shape of the blanks permits them to be designed so as to compensate for earing caused by the anisotropy of the material from which the web is made. Various punches and slitting arrangements can be employed to perforate the web and to longitudinally and laterally cut it so as to form the strip and/or blanks therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4449434
Abstract: Apparatus for cutting holes and notches in thermoplastic film by using heated steel rule dies. The dies are set into a heated die block, and scrap passes through the die, and through a hole in the heated die block so pieces of scrap fuse together as they pass through the block. The die block is fixed, and a movable platen urges the film down against the heated dies. A stripper is biased up to strip the film from the dies after cutting, and is resiliently movable down to allow cutting. Air can be directed through the stripper to blow the film up, off the stripper, to prevent melting when the film motion stops. Use of two dies accurately spaced can cut wicket holes and provide accurate cutting to assure proper operation in a bagging machine.
